.SYNOPSIS...
Low clouds, fog, patchy drizzle linger this evening but with
above-freezing temperatures. The next weather system moves up
from the Midwest, spreading rain and fog over Southern New
England overnight and Friday morning. The weather system swings
a cold front through our area Friday, with much colder air
moving in behind it as well as strong and potentially damaging
winds Friday night and Saturday. Dry, near-seasonable
conditions Sunday into Monday. Potent storm system appearing
more likely Tuesday into Wednesday however exact outcomes still
largely uncertain. Quickly mild late-week with a potential shot
of wet- weather.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1 AM update...
Next period of rain moving into western New Eng with steadier
rainfall assocd with weak frontal wave lifting NE from PA. Focus
for rainfall early this morning will be across the interior
then shifting to the coast later this morning.

Previous discussion...
Initial wave of rain assocd with lead shortwave lifting NE
across interior SNE this evening. Expect a brief break after
this moves through before more widespread rain along the nose of
increasing low level jet moves in after midnight. Main focus
will remain across the interior through the night, shifting to
the south coast Fri morning. There are some convective elements
upstream across PA so brief heavier rainfall possible and low
risk for an isold rumble of thunder.

Current forecast on track. Adjusted PoPs for latest radar
trends. Otherwise, areas of drizzle and fog will persist in
eastern New Eng. Temps will remain steady in the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Friday...

Upper shortwave ejecting northeast through Canada with
supporting 160-kt upper jet moving northeast over Southern New
England. This will drive mild air ahead of the front and over
Southern New England. It will also drive a cold front east
through our area during the mid morning to mid afternoon. Expect
rain to slowly diminish during the morning. Isolated thunder is
possible ahead of the cold front with best chance in our
southern areas.

Low level temperatures are equiv to 850 mb temps of 0 to -2C. So
pre-front max temps are expected in the 50s. Can't rule out near
60 in RI and SE Mass.

Once the cold front moves through and winds shift from the west,
expect much colder air to move in. Temps aloft drop during the
afternoon, more supportive of 30s and 40s. Cold advection at all
levels will also promote mixing that will draw gusty winds to
the surface. Initial mixing will support gusts around 30 kt/35
mph. Drier air will lead to clearing skies during the afternoon.

Friday night...

Cold advection becomes stronger at night, and will maintain
mixing through the night. Model winds in the mixed layer, up to

Overview and model preferences...
New England rests almost perfectly beneath a strong slightly
SW-NE oriented upper lvl jet, with confluence aloft implied in
height fields. This at least is due to a somewhat anomalous mid
lvl Bermuda High, exceeding 590dm at H5, which acts as a
blocking ridge, keeping lobes of the polar vortex mainly to the
N. As previous forecaster noted the last couple of days, this
pattern is not particularly conducive to a snowy S New England
winter. However, that is not to say there aren’t things to
watch, particularly regarding an acute wave ejecting E out of
the vortex currently wrapped up on the BC coastline, which could
interact with a slightly weaker arctic wave. The impacts from
this are most likely felt late Tue into Wed. Otherwise, outside
of a suppressed wave tracking across the region late Sun into
Mon, the confluence and mean jet overhead suggests a mainly dry
forecast. Today’s update weight toward the more consistent
ECMWF but with some deference to other long range guidance,
especially given the uncertainty regarding thermal profiles for
the mid week system.

Details...

Sat and Sun...
Waning pressure rise/fall couplet early Sat, however early LLJ
remains 50-60 kt with bufkit mixing profiles supportive of about
80-90 percent of this momentum mixing to the surface. Wind
headlines are likely to linger for much of the day, although by
late afternoon the pres gradient and couplet appear to be weak
enough that any headlines will likely be dropped. Otherwise,
mainly dry thanks to high pres dropping out of a central pres
around 1040mb. H85 temp anomalies -8C to -12C, however mixing
should allow temps to reach seasonal normals (roughly mid 30s
for highs). Sat night mins likely colder than normal however
thanks to good setup for radiational cooling with the crest of
high pres.

Sun night into Mon...
Shortwave rotates out of the polar vortex, with the core
remaining well N in Quebec. The wave is rapidly opening as it
interacts with mid lvl confluence and already moisture starved,
so anticipate little fanfare with this feature. This is
especially true given the strongest baroclinic gradient is well
S of the region. Mainly cloudy with an isolated SHSN possible,
but otherwise little impact. Temps remain near seasonal normals.

Tue and Wed...
Monitoring this period most. Acute wave currently wrapped into
the BC vortex finally begins to move E and may/may not interact
with a weaker arctic wave and take on a negative tilt. The
initial parent low already begins occlusion process as it
approaches Tue, however noting secondary cyclogenesis possible
along the triple point. This feature would be a more classic
coastal low. The track of this secondary feature is crucial, as
noted previously as it will define how efficiently ageostrophic
response can maintain mid and lower lvl cold air. Also, will
watch path of high pres to the N, which taking a mean of current
guidance will slide slowly into the Maritimes as the secondary
low develops. Noting some cold air damming signal in mass fields
as a result.

Ultimately, the phasing of the N stream and Pacific wave will
have to be watched, but there are strong enough dynamics in play
that the thermal response at least suggests a start as a snow
or wintry mix. These details will be fine tuned as the features
become better sampled, but given ECMWF has been relatively
consistent and other guidance/ensemble members are following
suit, this is worth a watch. Headline worthy snowfall/wintry
precip are possible, especially thanks to a tapping of Gulf of
Mexico moisture. Premature to discuss potential amounts as
mesoscale features and thermal fields remain uncertain.

Late next week...
Mean mid/upper lvl jet shifts S per latest guidance. This
implies a shift toward colder/drier conditions which may impact
the region. Not a particularly bitter setup, but will favor
generally below normal temperatures.
