.SYNOPSIS...

Low pressure will lift off to the east and northeast overnight.
Snowfall will gradually come to an end from west to east. Expect
light snow and rain to linger into early Wednesday morning
across the coastal plain and Rhode Island. Arctic air moves in
late Wed into Wed night, accompanied by strong wind gusts,
scattered snow squalls and very low wind chill values. Dry and
cold conditions continue Thursday and Friday. Dry weather likely
lingers through the weekend and will be accompanied by
moderating temperatures.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

1 AM Update:

No major changes in the latest update. Slowed down precipitation
coming to an end and nudged things toward the latest HREF
guidance. Bumped up QPF along the east coast as there may be
some ocean enhancement, which is supported by the latest radar.

1030 PM Update:

* Potential for some light snow in Eastern MA and black ice
  tonight*

The Arctic front is now over Northern Wisconsin and Lake
Superior, which will sweep through our region tomorrow afternoon
into early evening and produce potential snow squalls. But for
tonight, light northwest winds along with partial clearing
should see temperatures drop into the low 20s in interior MA/CT
and mid to upper 20s for the coastal plains and RI. The
exception would be right along the south coast and on the Cape,
which drops into the low to mid 30s. Currently, most locations
have slowly dropped below freezing except for southeast MA and
southern RI. Surface map is showing a subtle inverted trough
over the region, which could lead to a resurgence of
precipitation after midnight. With a saturated snow growth
region, could see a coating to half an inch of snow across far
Eastern MA, before daybreak. As for the Cape and immediate South
Coast, it would be a brief rain shower since overnight
temperatures stay above freezing. Skies should become mostly
clear over interior MA/CT but stay mostly cloudy till daybreak
over Eastern MA and RI with the The bigger concern would be the
refreezing of residual moisture on the roads overnight. Treated
roads should be in good shape, but will want to watch for icy
spots on secondary roads for tomorrow early morning commute.

Previous discussion:

1001 mb surface low now passing south of Nantucket per MSAS
observations. Current radar mosaic shows what appears to be the
last wave of precip progressing through eastern CT into RI and
eastern MA, becoming more intermittent/more spotty-drizzly back
into western and central MA. Will continue the Winter Wx
Advisory with the potential for continued, although light icing
from FZDZ or very light FZRA. A changeover to light snow or
flurries with little additional accumulation is expected over
the next few hours, as colder air filters back in on NW winds
as the surface low pulls into the Canada Maritimes. Though most
areas should be dry by midnight in the interior, it may take
until early overnight until conditions trend dry across eastern
MA, Cape Cod and the Islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Highlights:

* Arctic cold front brings a period of scattered snow
  showers/squalls mid afternoon to early evening Wednesday,
  possibly impacting the PM commute.

* Blast of Arctic air behind the front Wednesday night, with
  gusty northwest winds producing wind chills between zero and
  15 below.

Weak ridging to remain in place for the first part of the day,
stuck between today's frontal system and the strong Arctic cold
front now over the northern Great Lakes. This Arctic front is
expected to move across southern New England during the mid-aftn
to early evening hours. Some of the coldest air yet experienced
in the winter (850 mb temps -18 to -21C) lies in the passage of
the Arctic front.

Expecting dry conditions through early afternoon with
temperatures rising into the upper 20s to mid 30s. Majority of
guidance brings the Arctic front through between 18-20z into
western MA/northern CT, and 21-00z eastern MA/RI. Most models
show some pretty spotty QPF with the frontal passage, a few
hundredths or less. However progged Snow Squall Parameter
values are between 2-4 units driven by steep low-level lapse
rates and wintertime surface-based CAPE values between 40-90
J/kg. This will work in conjunction with Great Lakes moisture to
produce a period of convective snow showers and possible snow
squalls. Snow squalls are short-lived features (less than an
hour, often between 20-30 minutes) with the potential for
reductions in visibilities between a quarter to 1 mile. Lack of
stronger low- level frontogenesis suggests that snow squalls may
be more spotty/scattered than a true squall line, and those
trends also reflected in the latest HREF and NAM-3 km
reflectivity guidance. This period of brief snow bursts/squalls
could make for brief periods of difficult travel during the PM
rush hour.

850 mb front surges through during the evening hours, with
steepening lapse rates promoting strong/gusty northwest winds
as well as sharply falling temperatures. Most areas by midnight
should be gusting to around 30-35 mph (even to borderline Wind
Advisory levels out on the Cape). Air temperatures should fall
into the single digits by daybreak, with wind chill values in
the single digits below zero across most of the interior, to
around 15 below in the eastern slopes of the Berkshires. May
have to consider Wind chill headlines for at least part of the
CT river valley if greater confidence in wind chills near or
colder than 15 below looks more likely.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Prolonged period of dry weather expected during this time

* Well below normal temperatures expected into this weekend, then
  becoming more normal for late December into early next week.

Large high pressure should extend from central Canada into the
central Appalachians by late this week. This will maintain a
prolonged period of dry weather into early next week across
southern New England.

Our region will be on the cold side of this high pressure through
late this week. Modified arctic air will overspread southern New
England, leading to well below normal temperatures. Once the core of
this high pressure is focused more from the central Appalachians
into the Mid Atlantic states this weekend, wind direction should
shift to more of a westerly direction, which should mean a warming
trend this weekend into early next week.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence.

IFR to MVFR conditions gradually improving to VFR from west to
east late tonight into early Wednesday...roughly between 08Z and
14Z. Precipitation will gradually wind down, but have held onto
things until roughly 12-15Z for eastern TAF sites due to an
inverted trough lifting through. Northwest winds around 5 to 10
knots.

Wednesday...Any lingering MVFR conditions will become VFR. An
Arctic front brings a period of snow showers and possible snow
squalls; best chance N/W of PVD. Brief 30-min vsby reduction to
IFR-LIFR levels possible in any snow squall. Tried to best time
this activity in the latest TAFs with MVFR conditions between
roughly 18Z-00Z. Held off on IFR/LIFR limits due to confidence.
Winds W 5-10 kts increase to 15-25 kts gusts 30-35 kts late
Wednesday behind the Arctic front.

into Wednesday, and project to build further as a strong Arctic
front moves across the waters late Wednesday into Wednesday

...AREAS OF BLACK ICE AND LIGHT SNOW WILL RESULT IN SOME SLIPPERY
ROADS FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE...

Light snow in eastern MA will end around daybreak. While just a
coating to one half inch is expected, below freezing temperatures
will result in some icy spots on untreated roads. For the rest of
the region, there will be areas of black ice this morning.

Motorists should use caution this morning as any untreated roads
will be slippery.
