.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure centered over DelMarVa slides eastward passing
south of New England this afternoon. Intensifying low pressure
will bring a a cold soaking rain very late tonight into Sunday.
The rain may begin as a brief period of freezing rain across the
high terrain of the Berkshires/Worcester Hills and end as a bit
of wet snow later Sunday, but any impacts should be limited.
Low pressure then moves into the Maritimes Sunday night, with a
period of breezy northwest winds and gales on the waters. Dry
trend for Monday thru early Wednesday under high pressure, with
above normal temperatures. Another storm system passing to our
north for Wednesday brings a period of showers, with gusty
northwest winds and colder temperatures Wednesday night into
Thanksgiving. Below normal temperatures then may continue into
the upcoming weekend.

Forecast is on track...with sunny skies and west winds, gusting
to 15-25 mph at times. Highs today in the 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
* A cold soaking rain is in store for the region on Sunday

* High terrain of the Berks/Worcester Hills may see a touch of ice
  Sun am and a bit of wet snow in the afternoon, but rain dominates

Tonight...

Light winds early this evening and just some high clouds will allow
temps to quickly drop after sunset across the outlying locations.
Some areas will see temps fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s, but
these readings should level off and rise later tonight as clouds
thicken ahead of an approaching low pressure.  While dry weather
should prevail this evening, expect widespread rain to overspread
the region from southwest to northeast roughly between midnight and
6 am.  Model cross sections indicate a substantial mid level warm
layer, so not really concerned about any snow even in our far
northwest zones.  In fact, boundary layer should be above freezing
in most locations so ptype will generally be rain.  The exception
might be the high terrain of the Worcester Hills/Berkshires, where a
period of freezing rain will be possible at the onset.  Given this
is a late 2nd period event and marginal, opted to defer the need for
headlines to the next shift.

Sunday...

A soaking cold rain is in store for the region on Sunday as an
intensifying low pressure system tracks near the southeast New
England coast.  As mentioned in the previous paragraph, a brief
period of freezing rain will be possible at the onset mainly across
the high terrain of the Berks/Worcester Hills.  However, if this
occurs ptype should change to all rain by late Sun morning.  Given
the strengthening surface low and its mid level centers closing off
expect strong forcing, so the rain may fall heavy at times. Rainfall
amounts on the order of 0.50 to 1.50 inches are expected, but not
expecting any flooding issues.

The main concern Sunday afternoon is will the rain flip to a period
of wet snow...mainly across the high terrain of the Berks/Worcester
Hills.  A big limiting factor is that there is not a cold high to
the north, so that is relying on strictly dynamical cooling and
precipitation intensity.  The guidance does suggest this may be
enough to result in a change to a period of wet snow, generally in
the high terrain of the Worcester Hills/Berkshires.  Even in these
locations though thermal profiles are marginal and probably very
dependent on precipitation intensity.  At this time, thinking the
most likely scenario is a dusting to 1" of wet snow with perhaps up
to 2" of snow in our highest terrain along the east slopes of the
Berks.  In a worst case scenario, suppose there could be some 3 to 4
inch amounts in the highest terrain, but also may end up with no
accumulations anywhere in our region.  So in a nutshell, the impacts
from any snow look to be minor if any and confined to the high
terrain.

Lastly, may see some of the immediate coastline flirt with marginal
wind advisory conditions for a time.  However, given the lack of
high pressure to the north the wind gusts will be kept in check.
Easterly wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph along the coast develop Sun am
and shift to the NNW by late afternoon/early evening. Highest risk
for reaching wind advisory criteria will be across the
Cape/Nantucket, but given leaves are generally off the trees not
expecting a significant impact.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Precipitation ends by midnight Sunday night with likely gale
  conditions on the waters. Diminishing NW winds into Monday.

* Dry with above-normal temperatures Mon through early Wed.

* Frontal system brings a period of light showers Wednesday, along
  with increasing southwest winds/gusts before frontal passage.

* Longer period of gusty northwest winds Wed night into Thanksgiving
  Day, with teens-20s wind chills. Potential for wind headlines.

* Temperatures trending below normal Thurs thru Sat.

Details...

ECMWF and GFS ensemble means generally in good agreement on the mid-
level pattern in the period. The shortwave trough responsible for
Sunday's projected progressive coastal low looks to lift into the
Canada Maritimes by Monday. 500 mb heights then gradually rise along
the Eastern US into midweek and the pre-Thanksgiving travel period -
as longwave troughing is carved out along the West Coast/Southwest
US and deep southwest flow aloft transports milder air NEward from
the Desert Southwest towards Southern New England. That's a 500 mb
configuration that lends itself toward moderating, milder than
normal temperatures. A mid-level shortwave trough and associated sfc
frontal system progress NE from the central Rockies to the Great
Lakes by Wednesday. By the Thanksgiving holiday, the southwestern
CONUS trough becomes increasingly detached from the westerlies as
500 mb heights amplify significantly into the central part of North
America. That leads to northwesterly polar-jet flow and a conduit
for colder than normal temperatures to intrude into the Northeastern
states for Thursday into the first part of the upcoming weekend.

Sunday Night:

Coastal low moves into the Gulf of Maine early Sunday night, with
diminishing PoPs through the before-midnight period, with dry
conditions by the overnight. Precip may end a brief period of wet
snowflakes underneath the upper level trough Sunday night towards
central/eastern MA, RI and CT, but negligible accumulation. As
the primary cyclone pulls away from our area, surface winds
become northwest and become enhanced/gusty, with wind gusts over
the land between 25-40 mph (on the higher end of that range
towards the South Shore, Cape Cod and the coastline of eastern
MA, but should remain at sub-Advisory levels). Gale-force
northwest gusts across the southern/eastern waters. Lows upper
20s NW MA to near freezing across most of the interior, with
lows mid-30s in the MA coastal plain into the Cape and Islands.

Monday Thru Tuesday Night:

Quiet weather through this part of the forecast with high pressure
in control. Sfc ridge axis shifting off the coast Monday and
allowing for winds to become S/SW. SW winds should become moderate
breezes into Tuesday with somewhat stronger gradient flow.

As mentioned above, looking at a stretch of milder than normal temps
with good diurnal ranges in this period, with 850 mb temperatures on
Monday ranging from +2 to +4C Monday, and around +5 to +7C into
Tuesday. MEX-based temps are some 10F above normal by Tuesday both
on the highs and lows. Though highs in the 40s to low 50s are just
above normal for Monday, into Tuesday most areas are into the 50s
and wouldn't discount some spot 60s toward the South Shore, RI into
parts of CT Tuesday with mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday:

Potent shortwave trough and sub-995 mb cyclone progresses
northeastward into northern New England Wednesday. Though this
frontal system is likely to be the next chance for precipitation
(after Sunday's system clears), most of the NWP keeps the greatest
precipitation more into VT/NH. Still would expect there to be some
showers, though QPF amounts may be on the light side. And thermally,
temperatures appear too warm to support any frozen precip so
envisioning this to be an all-rain scenario for southern New
England.

At least at this point, winds look to be the primary concern related
to this system. Southwest winds in the warm sector increase with GFS-
based 950 mb winds between 35-50 kt by Wednesday afternoon from the
North Shore to Hartford southeastward, strongest on the waters.
Given potential for clouds, and warm advection over the waters, it
opens the door for some uncertainty on how deep can we mix into the
PBL. Showed southwest winds to 30 mph over the land, with likelihood
of at least solid SCA to lower-end gale-force gusts in the southwest
flow. With astronomical tides being on the high side, may have some
potential for minor coastal flooding towards the south-facing coasts
in Wednesday's high tide in conjunction with these increasing
SW winds.

However as the cyclone moves into Nova Scotia Wednesday night,
strong cold advection boosting low-level lapse rates and strong
pressure rise/fall couplet across Southern New England would make
the case for even stronger winds on the northwest/backside of the
system. I opted to raise winds/gusts over a model blend pretty
substantially for Wednesday night, with land-based northwest gusts
knocking on the door of advisory levels (35-50 mph possible?). Will
defer to later guidance but may need to consider wind headlines in
this period at least to handle the northwest winds, with some impact-
based argument being that the winds would be coinciding with the
Thanksgiving holiday. More on that below.

After a mild stretch of weather Tuesday-Wednesday, temperatures fall
pretty quickly amid sharp cold advection Wednesday night. 850 mb
temps fall to the -6 to -8C range by 12z Thursday with lows in the
30s by daybreak, with wind chills in the upper teens to upper 20s.

Thursday/Thanksgiving Day:

A continued concern for strong/gusty N/NW winds both over the land
and the waters. GFS/ECMWF show an enhanced northerly pressure
gradient between a 1040 mb high over the Canadian Prairies into the
northern Gt Lakes and the departing sub-990 mb cyclone. The gust
potential is also augmented by continued cold air aloft with 850 mb
temps falling further to values between -9 to -12C by 00z Friday.
Showed wind gusts in the 35-50 mph range at least during the daytime
peak mixing hours - and with temperatures in the 30s to low 40s,
could be looking at another period of daytime wind chills in the
teens to 20s. So an outlook for Thanksgiving looks to be dry, but
also a pretty chilly and breezy/windy day.

Friday into Saturday:

Slow-evolving pattern as 500 mb regime over the North Atlantic
becomes increasingly blocky. Surface ridge to our west will continue
to build into the region allowing for dry conditions. Temperatures
should continue to trend on the below-average side though, with
diminishing trend to northwest winds moving through this period.
Will also see some moderation in temperatures by Saturday night and
moreso into Sunday. Highs Friday into Saturday are in the 30s to low
40s, with lows in the 20s.

Craft Advisories now. We have received a report of gusts to
25-30 kt on Nantucket Sound but all other values are less than
20 kt. Winds should be diminishing as the afternoon progresses
as the pressure gradient weakens.

Tonight...High pressure continues passing southeast of the
region, ahead of intensifying low pressure. Winds/seas should
generally remain below SCA thresholds, but probably do reach
criteria across our southern waters toward daybreak.

Sunday...Intensifying low pressure lifting northeast across the
southeast New England coast will result in building seas and return
to gale force wind gusts.  Have issued Gale Watches for most waters
Sun into Sun night with strong SCA for Boston Harbor/Narragansett
Bay.  East Wind gusts up to 35 knots possible Sun morning with 40
knot wind gusts likely late Sun into Sun night behind the
intensifying storm.
