.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves offshore today, but maintains dry weather
through the day. An offshore storm will pass close enough to
Southern New England for locally heavy rain in southeast
Massachusetts and RI, and potentially some wet snow in the
hills of CT/RI and Worcester county. Dry and windy weather
moves in behind the storm Wednesday afternoon. Cool conditions
continue into Thursday. Low pressure moves across the region
Friday afternoon into Saturday, bringing rain, with a mix of
snow across the higher terrain at the start. Another high moves
across the northeast Sunday, then another low approaches early
next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
930 AM update...

High pres moves offshore today with high clouds overspreading
SNE today. Otherwise, dry column will maintain dry weather
through today. Current forecast on track.

Previous Discussion...

Surface high pressure moves off over the Atlantic while a
shortwave ridge move over New England today. This will maintain
subsidence and dry weather over Southern New England through
the day. Mixing away from the coast should reach to near 850 mb,
where temperatures are forecast from -4C to -6C. This suggests
inland max temps around 50, with coolest temps near the south
coast where the wind comes off the water.

Cross sections also show increasing cloud moisture during the
afternoon and evening. Expect increasing mid and high clouds
during this time.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Overall...

Shortwave moving out of the Southern USA generates a coastal low
today off Georgia and the Carolinas. The shortwave turns the
upper flow south-southwest today, which will draw the coastal
low up the East Coast. Models are in agreement on the storm
center tracking a little south of the 40N/70W benchmark, passing
southeast of Massachusetts Wednesday morning and then moving off
through Nova Scotia.

Upper flow behind the storm turns zonal, bringing a short period
of dry mild weather Wednesday. But colder air arrives late in
the day.

Tonight into Wednesday morning...

Based on the consensus track, one would expect the heaviest
weather across RI and SE Mass...possibly adjacent NE
Connecticut. The 500 mb confluent zone is across this area.
The 700 mb closed contours move across this area with the
confluent zone roughly Springfield to Portsmouth NH. So at the
least we would expect a period of rain in this area.

The precipitation occurs at night, when temperatures will be at
their coolest. Strongest mid-level FGEN moves across the region
at that time, especially 06Z to 09Z. There is potential for
precipitation to trigger diabatic cooling. Meanwhile
temperatures are forecast to be in the 30s with the central and
western hills 30 to 35. With most temperatures borderline for
snow, it wouldn't take much cooling to push them into creating a
burst of snow. Best chance for this would be in the hills,
especially the Worcester Hills and hills of NW Rhode Island/NE
Connecticut. Accumulations of a coating to 2 inches are
possible, but expect a very wet snow if it accumulates. Much of
this should be on non-paved surfaces.

With storm passage around 12Z and winds turning more from the
north and then northwest, expect precip to taper off Wednesday
morning.

Wednesday afternoon ...

Coastal storm quickly exits the region with strong subsidence
on the trailing side. Drier air brings clearing and solar
heating. The mildest air aloft actually trails the overnight
storm. Mixing is forecast to reach up to 800 mb, tapping
temperatures that support surface max temps of 55-60. Winds in
the mixed layer are forecast at 30-40 kt, so expect winds
gusting near that value during the afternoon. A Wind Advisory
may eventually be needed.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Cool and dry Wed night into early Friday
* Rain develops late Fri/Fri night, with some wet snow possible
  at the onset in the interior
* Conditions slowly improve Saturday, then dry and seasonable
  Sunday

Wednesday night through Thursday night...

H5 short wave pushes NE into the Gulf of Maine Wed evening as
the surface low deepens as it approaches Nova Scotia. Will see
leftover gusts up to 25-30 kt, highest across east coastal Mass
and the higher inland tonight Wed evening. The winds should
diminish by midnight, in time for another weak, dry trough in
the W-NW flow to cross the region. Expect mostly clear skies
Wed night. H85 temps drop to -5C to -11C (S to N) overnight Wed
night, so will see temps bottom out in the 30s across most
areas, though could see readings in the upper 20s across the
higher terrain.

The cutoff low lifts NE to the Labrador Sea during Thu, while
high pressure crosses New England in the broad, nearly zonal mid
level steering flow. Even with high pressure building SE across
the region, will not see too much recovery in H85 temps
especially across the interior. Expect highs to range from 40-45
across the higher terrain to the lower 50s across the coastal
plain. Clouds will increase during the afternoon mainly S of the
Mass Pike.

Looks like it will remain mainly dry even with the fast
steering flow aloft Thu night. Noting a weak H5 short wave in
this fast flow, so expect clouds to continue to increase with
increasing mid level moisture.

Friday and Friday night...

00Z models showing diverging solutions during this timeframe
with the fast flow aloft. High pres should shift E Friday
morning, then deeper moisture should push in from W-E Fri
afternoon/evening. Leaned toward 00Z GFS/EC for this timeframe,
which were pretty similar. May see 0.25 to 0.5 inches QPF Fri
night on S-SE surface wind flow.

Will see mainly rain as temps remain steady or may slowly rise
Fri night. However, might see a brief mix with snow across the E
slopes of the Berkshires Fri evening.

Saturday through Monday...

Quite a spread in model solutions during this timeframe,
especially with timing of individual systems. Rain may linger
Sat morning, then should slowly exit during the afternoon. Low
risk some light showers may linger into Sat evening across Cape
Cod and the islands.

At this point, have a dry forecast for late Sat night into
Sunday. Some question on timing of yet another system that may
approach during Sunday afternoon and may linger through Monday.
Rather high uncertainty on the timing and track of this system,
however.

valley as rain overspreads region. A period of heavy rain and
IFR likely across Cape/Islands and eastern MA, and rain may mix
with snow at times across eastern MA. Across higher elevations
in central MA, NW RI and eastern CT, wet snow is likely with
minor accums possible. NE wind gusts to 40 kt developing late
tonight over ACK, and 30 kt over Cape Cod.

Wednesday...High confidence.
Rain or RA/SN mix exits eastern MA coast 12-13z, with MVFR/IFR
quickly improving to VFR 14-16z. N wind gusts 35-40 kt in the
morning outer Cape and ACK. During the afternoon winds shift to
W with gusts 35-45 kt developing mid/late afternoon. Strongest
gusts over higher elevations in MA.

KBOS terminal...High confidence in TAF. Expect MVFR in rain
after midnight with brief IFR possible. RA/SN mix possible but
no accum. Conditions rapidly improving to VFR by 15z. West gusts
35-40 kt developing by 21z.

KBDL terminal...High confidence in TAF. Mostly VFR, but brief
MVFR in -RA possible overnight. West gusts to 35 kt developing
by 21z.

Low pressure passes southeast of 40N/70W late at night. East to
northeast winds near the low should reach gale force over our
southern and most eastern waters around/after midnight. Gale
Warnings have been issued for most of our waters, Small Crafts
in Narragansett Bay and Mass Bay. Vsby reduced to 2-3 miles
after midnight.

Wednesday...
Coastal low passes during the morning and moves off to Nova
Scotia. Northeast gales shift from the Northwest by afternoon.
Vsbys reduced in morning rain but improves by midday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for northern Connecticut, all of
Massachusetts east of Berkshire County, and Rhode Island.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

Coastal low pressure will impact the region tonight with heavy
rainfall across southeast Massachusetts and possibly into east
coastal Rhode Island. Northerly wind gusts may approach advisory
criteria toward daybreak Wednesday across Cape Cod and the islands.

Minor wet snow accumulations are possible across the hills of central
Massachusetts, northwest Rhode Island and northeast Connecticut
mainly after midnight tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Northeast winds will become northwest on Wednesday, with the
possibility of gusts reaching advisory criteria across outer Cape
Cod and Nantucket Wednesday morning. Northwest winds will become
gusty across the remainder of the region Wednesday afternoon.
