AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
Periods of light rain will transition towards periods of
moderate to heavy rainfall through tonight across the region as
a potent storm approaches. Occasional gusty winds will accompany
this storm system. As strong cold front will cross and exit the
region Friday with windy conditions expected. Cooler and mainly
tranquil weather for most of the region this weekend, however,
some lake effect activity may impact portions of the western
Adirondacks.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
     Wind advisory in effect from 5 PM this afternoon through 8
PM Friday...

     Flood watch issued for areas along the Interstate 90
corridor to southern VT and points northward this afternoon
through Friday morning...

As of 1030 AM EDT...Main update was to lower PoPs/Wx potential
through this morning as we are between jet streaks at the
present time. Radar does show some patchy drizzle developing
upstream with elevation based upslope areas of showers into the
Dacks, southern Greens, Berks and NW Hills of CT. Another
batch of showers across NJ appears to be along the theta-e
ridge with increasing magnitudes that, per the HRRR/RAP, will
track just to the southeast of Albany through 18Z. As for
temperatures, seem our diurnal climb is a bit slower as we will
slow down the ascent with this update, but, maintain the high
forecast as 12Z sounding suggests we could approach 70F here for
valley locations this afternoon.

Prev Disc...
Rain affecting our region and there is a break in northwestern
areas. There is also another break seen in satellite and radar
data in western NY/PA moving east. Once the current area of
rain moves out around mid morning, a period of more scattered
showers will occur into the afternoon with some possible
thinning of the clouds in some areas. The period of more
scattered showers and possible brief thinning of clouds along
with increasing boundary layer south winds and warming
temperatures should allow for highs in the upper 60s to lower
70s. Coverage of rain will increase again later this afternoon.

Increasing south to south southwest winds will result in
enhanced rainfall in parts of the southern Adirondacks and
eastern Catskills. Very gusty south winds to 35 mph are expected
in parts of the western Mohawk Valley, channel through parts of
the Hudson Valley and also into parts of the Taconics, northern
Berkshires and southern VT.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Upper closed low forming and deepening will track just NW of our
region tonight and into SE Canada Friday. Rain will increase in
coverage and intensity this evening with the approach of the
upper dynamics and leading edge of strong cold advection. Upper
dynamics and approaching strong boundary layer thermal gradient
along the cold front will support a line of convection, which
may or may not have much of any lightning, but could have some
very gusty winds where heavier rain mixes down the strong
boundary layer winds. The line of convection should track
through our region this evening and into the early morning hours
with gusty south winds shifting to strong west and southwest
winds. More enhanced rainfall is expected in the southern
Adirondacks until the front tracks through.

The cooling behind the cold front should be modified by the
strong west to southwest winds and the core of coldest air
lifting into eastern Canada with the closed upper low. Strong
gusty west to southwest winds gradually shift to west to
northwest by Friday evening. Winds gusting over 45 mph Friday
morning will diminish through the afternoon and by evening will
be gusting 25 to 35 mph. Some channeling of winds in the Mohawk
Valley and some winds in higher elevations will likely gust over
50 mph at times Friday morning into early afternoon.
Temperatures will only rise a few degrees during the day Friday
but the mixing with the gradual clearing of the sky and the
gusty winds should help temperatures get into the 50s but 40s in
higher terrain.

Winds diminish to light and in some areas near calm. A mostly
clear sky and radiation cooling should help temperatures fall
into the 20s to lower 30s. KALB airport will likely see its
first freezing or sub freezing temperature this season.

Weak upper energy and some reinforcing cooler air will approach
Saturday. There is very little moisture expected with this
system but there could be some intervals of clouds and sun,
especially in northern areas. Highs Saturday in the 40s to lower
50s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overall, the upper level pattern remains fairly consistent
through the long term portion of the forecast with a long wave
trough centered over the north-central CONUS. This places our
forecast area along the eastern fringe of the upper trough with
the potential for pieces of energy to move along it into our
region. Towards the end of the work week, models indicate that
the upper trough shifts east into the northeast CONUS as ridging
builds into the west.

We start the period with below normal temperatures and some
lake effect rain/snow showers. Some minor snow accumulations are
possible in the Dacks before surface high pressure builds into
the region, shutting off the lake moisture connection. High
temperatures Sunday afternoon will be the coldest of the full
seven day period with values struggling to reach the 50 degree
mark in the valleys. The high terrain could see highs tops out
in the upper 30s. Sunday night, all locations should finally
drop below freezing with high terrain locations falling into the
20s.

Monday into Tuesday, weather should remain dry as temperatures
moderate slightly. Highs on Monday will be in the mid 40s to low
50s, with highs on Tuesday back near seasonable levels.
Precipitation chances return Tuesday afternoon as an embedded
shortwave trough swings by our area. While it looks like the
best energy will stay north of the forecast area, some moisture
may get pulled northward, resulting in shower chances Tuesday
afternoon through Wednesday. P-type will likely remain mostly
rain but could see some snow mixing in during the overnight
periods in the high terrain.

Additional energy may spark off more showers on Thursday but
timing and placement is fairly uncertain given the upper level
flow pattern and model differences this far out. So for now,
have included slight to chance pops.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A strong cold front will move across the area late this evening.
Ahead of the front, scattered light rain showers will affect the
TAFs through 03z with mostly MVFR conditions. A period of heavy
showers and strong gusty winds will accompany the front from 03z
to 07z tonight, then some clearing could occur late tonight with
rising cigs. Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy, except
mostly sunny at POU, but with strong, gusty westerly winds.
Southerly winds will average 10 to 20 kts this afternoon into
this evening, then wind gusts of greater than 30 kts will
accompany the heavier showers and cold front later this evening.
Westerly winds will average 15 to 25 kts with gust past 40 kts
possible during the day Friday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Periods of rain, heavy at times, will impact the region through
tonight. This will result with minimal to no fire weather
related impacts during this time period. Drier weather returns
later Friday and into most of the upcoming weekend, with the
exception of the Adirondack region where some lake effect
activity with showers and clouds may linger.

.HYDROLOGY...
Flood watch issued for areas along the Interstate 90 corridor
and points northward.

Latest rainfall forecast totals and river forecast guidance from
the River Forecast Center point toward 1 to 3 inches of rain for
portions of the Adirondacks and southern Greens with 1 to 2
inches elsewhere. Given our recent wet pattern and elevated
river levels, points along the Mohawk, upper Hudson, Adirondack
head waters, Walloomsac and Hoosic may approach or exceed minor
flood stage. Furthermore, where poor drainage due to blocked
storm drains from fallen leaves may lead toward minor flooding
as well. The bulk of the heaviest QPF is expected to fall later
today into tonight where rainfall rates up to one inch within
an hour is possible.

Drier weather returns Friday and into most of the area into the
weekend.

.CLIMATE...
If the temperature falls to 32 degrees or less at Albany
International Airport Saturday morning, it will be the latest
first freeze of the season since 1931, when the first freeze was
