The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Coastal
Flood Watch, which is in effect from late Thursday night through
late Friday night.
* LOCATION...Maryland and Virginia Beaches.
* TIMING...For the Coastal Flood Watch, from late Thursday night
through late Friday night. For the Beach Hazards Statement,
until 8 PM EDT this evening. For the High Rip Current Risk,
until 8 PM EDT this evening.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Up to two foot of inundation above
ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines
and tidal waterways.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Flooding of vulnerable areas could result in
an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses
near the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 1 to 2 feet
above ground level in some areas resulting in a sufficient depth
to close numerous roads and threaten homes and businesses.
Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal
rivers and bays resulting in some road closures and flooding of
vehicles.
* SURF OR RIP CURRENT RISK...Breaking waves of around 3 feet
will result in rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip
currents.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for
flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be
alert for later statements or warnings...and take action to
protect property.

...COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH
LATE FRIDAY NIGHT...
The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Coastal
Flood Watch, which is in effect from late Thursday night through
late Friday night.
* LOCATION...The Lower Maryland Eastern Shore and Western Shore of
the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia including the Northern Neck and
Middle Peninsula Counties.
* TIMING...From late Thursday night through late Friday night.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...One to two feet of inundation above
ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines
and tidal waterways.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Flooding of vulnerable areas could result in
an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses
near the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 1 to 2 feet
above ground level in some areas resulting in a sufficient depth
to close numerous roads and threaten homes and businesses.
Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal
rivers and bays resulting in some road closures and flooding of
vehicles.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for
flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be
alert for later statements or warnings...and take action to
protect property.

* SURF OR RIP CURRENT RISK...Breaking waves of around 3 feet
will result in rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip
currents.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents...longshore currents...sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution
should be used when in or near the water.
There is a high risk of rip currents.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol flags and
signs.
If you become caught in a rip current...relax and float. Don't
swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following
the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help.
