Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A brief moderation in temperatures is expected over the next 48
hours before another blast of well below normal temperatures is
expected for the weekend and into next week. The highlights will
be windchill issues for the south side of the Brooks range, Upper
Tanana Valley and Alaska Range. Otherwise, village ice fog and
other cold weather issues can be expected through the period.

.DISCUSSION...
The 12Z model suite setup in good shape for the short term of the
forecast. The models did capture the surface ridge of high
pressure nosing into the 40 mile country this morning causing an
increase in wind for that region. Otherwise...The synoptic scale
features are well handled through the first 60 hours with a cold
upper trough over most of northern Alaska. A wave over the Gulf of
Alaska is handled similarly through the period with only impacts
to the far east.

In the extended the ensembles are showing for the interior a
fairly high confidence in a abnormally low temperatures anomaly
over Northern Alaska. The placement of the upper trough will
dictate the area with the lowest temperatures. The models have
swing between them from 850 temperature range from -7c to -38c
depending on the member and model. Stay tuned since it has been
several years since a cold snap like this has occurred.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Stratus, fog and flurries will
persist. Cold air aloft will filter south on Tuesday and will
persist for much of the week. Gusty northerly gap winds will
develop in the Brooks Range today and will continue through
Tuesday evening This will result in wind chill values reaching
advisory criteria in areas just south of the range. Low
temperatures of 30 to 55 below are are expected over the over the
Arctic Plain Tuesday into the weekend while lows of 25 to 35 below
are expected along the coast. No significant snowfall is
anticipated this week for the North Slope or the Brooks Range;
however, there will be flurries at times along the coast. With the
cold temperatures and a little bit of wind along the coast, we
expect some issues with wind chill values reaching advisory
criteria along the Beaufort Sea coast Thursday and Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior: Gusty northerly winds will
continue along the coast today and will persist through the
middle of the week. Cold air aloft will spread south over the
western Interior Tuesday with a cold airmass expected to remain in
place into early next week. This will bring the potential the
coldest temperatures so far this season, with valley locations in
the western Interior seeing temperatures as low as 40 to 50
degrees below zero. There is still a lot of uncertainty with the
exact details at the moment due to uncertainty in the placement
of the upper level trough. We will have to continue to monitor
this as the details come into better focus this week.

Central and Eastern Interior: A warming trend in temperatures
will continue through Tuesday. Closer to the Brooks Range, there
will be less cloud cover, so temperatures will likely remain
steady through the short term. Chances for snow increase this
evening. Any snow through Tuesday morning will be hit or miss.
There is a better chance for snow Tuesday afternoon into early
Wednesday as a shortwave moves to the northwest along the east
side of a longwave trough. The pressure gradient has tightened up
across the Interior this afternoon. This will cause northeasterly
winds to continue. Some spots in the northern Interior may
approach Wind Chill Advisory criteria tonight into Tuesday. Late
in the week, cold air aloft will filter south into a longwave
trough that will stretch over the area. The air mass aloft will be
cold enough to support valley temperatures in the 40s to 50s
below (or colder in some of the typical cold spots) in areas under
clear skies. The cloud cover forecast will depend on the position
of the trough axis. There is currently model uncertainty about
the position of the trough axis, especially as we move into the
weekend. The cold airmass aloft currently looks like it will
persist into at least the first part of next week, so there is
potential that some spots will see an extended period of
temperatures in the -40 to -50 range. We will have to continue to
monitor this as the details come into better focus this week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...North winds 25-35 kt over St
Lawrence Island much of this week could cause blowing spray
resulting in a build up of ice on power lines at Savoonga.
