.DISCUSSION...

Synopsis...Fronts continue to spin north over the state today.
Some strong winds near Alaska Range Passes again today as Chinook
sets up. A nose of warm air at about 1300 feet increasing the
chance of some Freezing Rain in the Interior south of the White
Mountains through this afternoon, otherwise snow as the front
moves through. Winds increasing from the east today on the Arctic
Coast, with some blowing snow reducing visibility.

Models...25/00Z solutions are in better agreement through the
short term aloft and at the surface with less divergence in the
details through time. Only minor differences at the surface when
initializing the solutions. At 850 hpa solutions indicated it
would be cooling aloft over the Middle Tanana Valley already, and
that is not occurring. With the change in flow aloft to more
southwest it should start later this morning with cooling
continuing through Saturday. Our choice of solutions worked well
yesterday, so going to stay the course and use the same solutions
again today which will be a NAMDNG/SREF blend for precipitation,
and mainly NAMDNG for winds.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridging over the state and the Arctic
continues as shortwaves move north over the state. A 505 dam low
is over the Eastern Bering Sea will move north over the Bering
Strait by late this evening, as associated shortwave moves from
over the Gulf of Alaska Coast north over the Alaska Range by noon
today, and over the south slopes of the Brooks Range by late this
evening. The low and shortwave will continue to the northwest as
it dissipates late Saturday. A second shortwave extends south from
the low and will move to the southwest mainland late this
evening, and will lie from Norton Sound to Kodiak City this
evening, and from Anaktuvuk Pass to Fairbanks to Whittier by
Saturday morning, and will be over the AlCan Border by late
Saturday morning. Ridging will north over the Southwest Mainland
behind the shortwave, and by Saturday evening it will push over
the Arctic Coast with the axis lying from Point Barrow to
Anaktuvuk Pass to Nenana to Valdez, and will lie over the AlCan
Border and Eastern Bering Sea by Sunday evening. A 500 dam low
over Shemya will merge with another low that moves to Adak by
Saturday morning, then moves northeast over the Central Bering Sea
to be over St Lawrence Island by late Sunday morning and
continues north over the Western Arctic through Monday morning. At
850 hpa...The -10C isotherm is north of most of the Arctic Coast
and will remain there. A dome of warmer air around 0C is over
SouthCentral Alaska and north of the Alaska Range over the leeside
trough and the Middle Tanana Valley and will persist through
today before cooling tonight. Temperatures will remain in the 0C
to -10C range after that.

Surface...Broad area over low pressure extends from the northwest
Pacific across the Bering Sea and continue to push east over the
State as weather fronts move north across the state. This morning
a 972 mb low has moved to Nunivak Island and a 972 mb low is near
Homer along the front as it moves north. The low near Nunivak
Island will move to St Lawrence Island by this evening with the
front moving to the south slopes of the Brooks Range, and the low
near Homer moving to Old Crow YT. High pressure over the Arctic
with a 1023 mb low 400 nm north of Wainwright will continue to
build east and by Saturday morning a 1027 mb high will be 400 nm
north of Point Barrow with the ridge axis extending southeast
over Banks Island, and ridging pushing south over MacKenzie Bay.
Several lows south of the Western Aleutians will merge this
afternoon and move to 100 nm north of Adak by Saturday morning and
the low over St Lawrence Island will move to Point Hope as the
weather front hangs up a bit in the Brooks Range. By Sunday
morning a 994 mb low will be in the Chukchi Sea moving north, a
990 mb low will be near St Lawrence Island moving north, and
leeside troughing will be north of the Brooks and Alaska Ranges
with high pressure pushing west over the Upper Yukon and Tanana
Valleys, and north over Southcentral Alaska.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Winds continue to pick up from
the east today. Winter Weather Advisory for the Northwest Coast
will continue as visibility remains poor around Point Lay. Gusts
to 40 mph possible along the remainder of the coast. Increasing
chances of snow as the decaying fronts move north into the area
and dissipate. Temperatures not changing significantly through the
weekend. Some gusty south winds in the Brooks Range starting
Saturday night will produce blowing and drifting snow that may
impact travel.

West Coast and Western Interior...A couple more fronts will be
moving through the area the next 24 hours. Some heavy snow
expected in the Upper Kobuk and Noatak basins, so have issued
Winter Weather Advisory for zone 217. To the south a nose of warm
air has pushed into the area from the south at around 1500 feet,
so good chance of Freezing Rain in zones 214, 215, 216, and 227
this morning before things cool. No significant accumulation is
expected. Snow will fall over much of the area for the next 48
hours or so. Winds picking up from the south late Saturday along
the coast as yet another low moves into the area. This may push
some water up on top of the shorefast ice along the coast from
Golovin to Teller. Temperatures will remain on the warm side with
highs pushing into the upper 20s to mid 30s.

Central and Eastern Interior...Weak Chinook again today as the
next front moves through the area. A nose of warm air aloft at
around 1300 feet will produce a chance of freezing rain in the
Interior south of the White Mountains. No significant accumulation
is expected but combined with the warmer temperatures and frost
developing on the roads it will create slick conditions on the
paved and ice packed roads, so have issued Winter Weather
Advisories for zones 221, 222, and 223. Chinook winds near the
passes in the Alaska Range will be gusting to around 55 mph with
some blowing snow so Winter Storm Advisories continue for zones
225 and 226. There is also a Chance of Freezing Rain near the
Passes as temperatures have risen to around 40 at Denali NP and
Healy as well as along the Richardson Highway. Some heavy snow
developing along the south slopes of the Central Brooks Range will
bring 2 to 9 inches of snow to the Dalton Highway north of the
Yukon River and most areas from the Koyukuk River north and west
of Chandalar Lake. Temperatures will remain on the warm side
through the middle of next week before cooling back down.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Will remain warm into middle
of next week as ridging aloft builds back over the state with
relatively strong south flow. Beyond Tuesday models area all over,
but expect things to start cooling back off.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A strong low moving
northeast to the Bering Strait will bring some moderate storm
surge to the region and may push water up on top of the ice along
the shorelines.
