...POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY
EVENING...

.An upper level low pressure system crossing Colorado will steer
the jet stream over New Mexico on Monday with very strong west to
southwest winds. The strongest winds are expected in the south
central mountains and adjacent highlands, including Ruidoso,
where gusts up to 70 mph are possible. The west central and
southwest mountains, including Gallup, may experience gusts
around 60 mph. Strong winds are also expected in the rest of the
central mountain chain and the adjacent eastern highlands. The 
strongest winds will be capable of downing power lines and trees, 
and damaging weak structures. Areas of blowing dust and very 
strong crosswinds will make driving hazardous with periods of 
visibility reduction in dust prone locations. The strongest winds 
will impact the western mountains around mid day, but not until 
the afternoon in the south central mountains where strong winds 
will linger into the evening.

to southwest winds over much of New Mexico. The strongest winds 
will occur in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the higher terrain

of 60 to 70 mph are likely. Strong winds are also expected over

Monday morning. Scattered to broken high clouds aoa 200 will move
across New Mexico through midday Monday with VFR conditions
prevailing. Winds will be light across the entire area tonight. A
band of stronger winds aloft will spread across New Mexico from the
west Monday morning. The higher elevations of western New Mexico,
including KGUP, the highlands east of the central mountain chain,
including KLVS, and portions of the east central plains will have
increasing winds by 15Z Monday morning with gusts up to 25 knots
possible.

...POTENTIAL FOR VERY STRONG WINDS MONDAY...

.SYNOPSIS...
A ridge of high pressure will finish crossing today producing high
temperatures a few to around 12 degrees above normal. Strong to very
strong winds will return on Monday as an upper level low pressure
system crossing Colorado steers the jet stream over New Mexico. The
strongest winds should be found in the west central and southwest
mountains (including Gallup) where gusts up to 60 mph will be
possible, and in the south central mountains where gusts up to 70
mph will be possible. The northern mountains may also receive a few
inches of snow Monday afternoon and night, except near a half foot in
the Tusas Mountains above Chama. Snow showers will probably linger
over central parts of the state Tuesday with below normal
temperatures areawide. It will remain cool and a little gusty during
the latter half of the week ahead.

.DISCUSSION...
A ridge of high pressure will finish crossing NM today with high
temperatures a few to around 12 degrees above normal.

An upper level low pressure system will pass eastward over CO Monday
and Monday night steering the polar jet stream squarely over NM
again. There will also be a sharp surface trough south of a roughly
992 mb surface low in eastern CO. Strong west and southwest winds
will result with the potential for widespread gusts in the 40-50 mph
range. Wind speeds at 700 mb are forecast to peak from 50-60 kt over
the west central and southwest mountains, and near 70 kt in the
south central mountains, where there is a good chance for potentially
damaging surface wind gusts up to 70 mph. Will issue a High Wind
Watch for these mountains including Gallup. Most of the moisture
with the system should stay north of NM, but northwest and especially
north central parts of the forecast area will see snow showers that
may be mixed with rain below 6000 feet. The northern mountains should
accumulate a few inches of snow with near a half foot possible in
the Tusas Mountains above Chama.

As the upper level low pressure system shifts eastward over the Great
Plains Monday night and Tuesday, a strong back door cold front will
dive southward into the eastern plains with strong winds. North wind
gusts should vary from 45 to 55 mph mainly Tuesday morning along and
east of a line from Raton to Clovis. Also on Tuesday, a weak
secondary shortwave trough will dig over NM while a somewhat moist
cold front pushes southward through central parts of the state. This
will cause clouds and mainly snow showers to linger over central
areas, but little or no accumulation is expected.

After high temperatures around 7 to 17 degrees below normal on
Tuesday, readings will rebound only slowly Wednesday through Saturday
as northwest flow aloft steers a series of perturbations
southeastward across the northern and central Rockies. This should
keep winds a little gusty over NM each day, and enable a few weak
cold fronts to sag southward through the state. Periods of light
precipitation will also be possible along and east of the northern
mountains.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Ridging aloft remains in place today along with poor ventilation.
Temperatures trend up 5-10F more degrees with MinRH dipping to the
low 20s across the east and 30-40 across western NM percentage wise.
West winds will be breezy this afternoon through FWZ108 in the East
Central Plains.

That will be nothing compared to another high wind event Monday. A
robust storm system will cross CO with 50-70mph 700mb jet passing
squarely over NM. The timing also matches quite nicely with peak
mixing Mon afternoon allowing sfc winds across the East Plains and
western high terrain 30-40mph with gusts 45-60mph. Occasional peak
gusts will likely reach up to 60+mph at higher elevs in the Sangre's
and Sacramento Mtns. Highs will remain well above normal for the
East Plains where MinRHs will dip to the low to mid teens. A few
hours of critical fire weather is likely as a result for eastern NM
Mon afternoon.

A strong backdoor cold front swings down through eastern NM Tue
morning afternoon after the upper trough gets elongated with the
main core of the system more squarely located over Nebraska. Strong
northerly winds 30-35mph with gusts up to 50mph along with
plummeting temperatures will follow behind the backdoor cold front.
The timing of the front at this time surges into far NE New Mexico
just after midnight Wed morning, reaching down to Clovis and the
Caprock by sunrise.

NW flow aloft sets up over the region with regularly scheduled weak
embedded disturbances swinging through bringing backdoor fronts
through the east Thu and Sat. Ventilation trends down starting Wed,
falling back to poor by Fri.

possible in the south central mountains, including Ruidoso. A
Pacific cold front will shift the wind direction out of the west
across western areas late in the day. A few inches of snow will also
be possible in the northern mountains Monday afternoon and night,
except potentially near a half foot in the Tusas Mountains above
Chama.
