Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 809 PM PST Fri Feb 16 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Warm and dry conditions can be expected for the weekend but strong winds will develop by Sunday afternoon across much of the region. Strong winds will likely continue through Monday while temperatures plummet to 10 to 15 degrees below normal Monday and Tuesday behind a cold front. This front may also bring some snow showers to eastern Lincoln and northern Mohave Counties Sunday night and Monday. && .UPDATE...Cool, clear evening in progress to start the holiday weekend. Saturday and the first half of Sunday will be the best times to enjoy outdoor activities under clear skies, warm temps and non-impactful winds. That all changes Sunday afternoon as winds start to increase and persist into Monday. Strongest winds look to be Sunday night. Old man winter is not done with us yet as a major drop in temperatures will occur between Sunday and Monday. 00z NAM MOS guidance for Las Vegas shows a high of 72 degrees Sunday, then 23 degrees colder at 49 Monday. Our current forecast of 55 degrees Monday may be a bit optimistic. All the 00z guidance has not yet arrived so will allow following shift to make any additional downward adjustment to highs. Forecast for tonight and Saturday on track so no update needed. && .DISCUSSION...Tonight through Friday. A dry zonal flow will be over the area through the weekend as a strong low pressure system drops into the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will warm to a little above normal Saturday with generally light winds expected. West to southwest winds will pick up considerably Sunday and Sunday evening with the upper trough getting closer, and there is potential for many zones in the forecast area to reach advisory level wind gusts. Temperatures will level off or possibly start to drop slightly in the northern CWA but most of the area will have additional warming compared to Saturday due to better mixing. The upper trough will continue to dig slowly southeastward early next week leading to a chance of snow showers over eastern Lincoln and northern Mohave Counties Sunday night and Monday. An associated cold front will also pass through the area with strong north or northwest winds behind it. Much cooler temperatures are therefore expected Monday. A dry northwest flow will develop behind the trough by Tuesday with even more cooling and high temperatures are forecast to be 10 to 15 degrees below normal. Low temperatures will be rather chilly as well both Tuesday and Wednesday morning and portions of the Las Vegas Valley will likely get down to freezing. You may want to start making plans to cover or move plants that are sensitive to cold temperatures. BKN high clouds from this morning will continue to shift southward through this evening. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Gusty, north winds down the Colorado River Valley will slowly decrease into this evening; remaining around 8-11 knots overnight. Light, diurnal winds are expected elsewhere before southwest flow takes over the southern Great Basin Saturday afternoon followed by the Mojave Desert Saturday night.
