Radar, satellite and surface observations indicate another band of
light snow moving though North Central Montana. Have raised the
PoPs over much of North Central Montana though late morning. Light
snow and flurries should taper off during the early afternoon.
Additional snowfall will generally be less than one half inch.

.SYNOPSIS...

The widespread light to at times moderate snow will gradually end
from north to south across North Central and Southwest Montana
during the daylight hours, bring a very brief reprieve from winters
relentless onslaught as of late. By the evening hours tonight, winds
will begin to increase along the Rocky Mountain Front, with wind
gusts approaching 60 mph. These strong winds will lead to
significant blowing and drifting snow once again.

Updated 1800Z.

Snowfall will come to and end from KHLN to KGTF to KLWT and
northward late this morning eventually returning VFR
conditions...although MVFR conditions may linger as clouds lift.
Areas south of this line may see snow linger into the afternoon
hours before diminishing this evening. MVFR to brief IFR
conditions are possible for these southern areas. Mainly VFR
conditions are then expected for tonight...however...increasing
winds could bring areas of blowing snow tonight into
Friday...especially for areas that receive fresh snow. MVFR
visibilities are possible with these winds. Blowing snow and
scattered snow are then possible for Friday morning...with more
widespread light snow possible later in the day Friday through

/ISSUED 358 AM MST Thu Feb 15 2018/

Today and Tonight...light to at times moderate snow will continue
through the morning hours today across portions of North Central
and Southwest Montana as the H500 shortwave axis approaches,
thereafter snow will begin to end from north to south as
subsidence associated with weak ridging builds in. Arctic high
pressure quickly builds southeast from Alberta Canada and across
North Central Montana during the afternoon hours, which will help
winds shift to the south/southwest across the region this
afternoon as the Arctic high continues to slide southeast into
Southeastern Montana by the late afternoon/early evening hours.
Lee-side surface trough then begins to sharpen rapidly this
evening and into the overnight hours as an area of low pressure
develops across Central Alberta Canada. At the same time, the
pressure gradient along the Rocky Mountain Front will strengthen
to around 75-100 microbars/km during the evening hours today, and
persist into the overnight hours. H700 flow will begin to back
throughout the afternoon hours today, becoming zonal by 00z
Friday. As this H700 flow becomes zonal, it will also begin to
increase along and to the east of the Continental Divide. 30-40kt
H700 flow along the Rocky Mountain at 00z Friday will increase to
around 45- 55kts by 06z, persisting then through the remainder of
the night. BUFKIT soundings at Marias Pass indicates ridgetop
stability yet again, which when combined with the increasing H700
flow will likely lead to mountian wave activity. Strong winds are
expected to develop this evening in response to this mountain wave
activity and strengthening pressure gradient along the Rocky
Mountain Front, which when combined with the recent snowfall will
likely lead to areas or widespread blowing and drifting of
snowfall. While winds don't appear to be as strong as they were
during the Tuesday- Wednesday wind event along the Rocky Mountain
Front, 55-65 mph winds should be expected none-the-less. Across
the plains of North Central Montana, patchy to areas of blowing
and drifting snow should be expected tonight as southwest winds
increase. - Moldan

Friday through Sunday Night...Northwesterly flow aloft prevails
through Saturday morning as high pressure aloft builds-in from the
west. Within this flow, a shortwave trough is progged to traverse
our CWA Friday evening into early Saturday morning. Flow aloft
for our region will then become more westerly later Saturday
through Monday, as the aforementioned ridge is broken-down by a
longwave trough and embedded shortwave disturbances overspreading
our area from the northwest. At the surface, a cold front over AB
and SK will near the border with North-Central MT by early Friday
evening. The front is then expected to stall along the Rocky
Mountain Front and Central MT mountains between Great Falls and
Helena by late Friday evening. This front will then move little
through early Saturday evening. In addition, a surface low is
still forecast to move southeastward along the aforementioned
stationary front on Saturday. During late Saturday evening into
early Monday morning, the front should become a cold front and
drift southward through Southwest Montana as the surface low moves
farther southeastward and cold advection takes hold over the CWA.

The above pattern will result in periods of mainly snow. The first
better window for snow should be Friday afternoon into Saturday
morning; particularly for the Rocky Mountain Front and the central
and southwestern sections of our CWA. During this period, westerly
upslope flow will be the primary trigger for snow, heavy at times,
along the Rocky Mountain Front. Elsewhere, large-scale lift induced
by the aforementioned front and shortwave trough, in conjunction
with favorable dynamics within the left-front quadrant of an upper-
level jet streak, should trigger light to moderate snow. Winter
weather highlights will likely be needed for this event, but will
let future shifts reevaluate the situation before making a final
decision. The second better window for snow, perhaps significant for
many places, looks to span Saturday afternoon through early Monday
morning. During this period, favorable upper-level jet dynamics,
frontogenesis aloft, and the aforementioned surface front should
contribute to the development of widespread snow for the CWA. As has
been the case during recent events, the best potential for heavier
snow bands tied to frontogenesis aloft looks to reside over North-
Central MT during this upcoming event. Near to slightly below-normal
temperatures are still expected Friday through Saturday. A return to
solidly below-normal temperatures is then expected Saturday night
through Sunday night.
