These winds will begin to increase tonight and Monday morning, and are then expected to peak Monday afternoon and evening. .SYNOPSIS...A spring storm will impact the region early in the
week. The associated cold front will reach northwest Utah late
tonight, then track across the area late Monday through early
Tuesday. High pressure will return midweek, followed by the next
storm system late in the week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Warm high pressure has settled over Utah and
southwest Wyoming this morning. Widespread mid and high level
cloud cover over the area helped keep overnight temperatures warm,
but will also limit afternoon heating a bit. All of this adds up
to a mostly cloudy day with temperatures 5-15 degrees above mid-
April normals, with breezy southerly winds possible late in the
day, especially in western Utah.
The big focus today will be the Pacific trough currently pushing
into the west coast, which will move into the Great Basin
overnight. The biggest impact with this storm for Utah is expected
to be strong, gusty winds ahead of the front, likely peaking
Monday afternoon. Once the cold front finally pushes into northern
and central Utah late Monday into Tuesday, it should lower snow
levels down to the valley floors, with accumulating snow possible
Tuesday morning. Will take a close look at the wind headlines
today, with widespread advisories and/or warnings possible.
Updated the forecast earlier today to include a slight chance of
showers in the mountains of far northern Utah, with light showers
currently traveling near the Utah/Idaho border. No further updates
are currently anticipated.

to continue through the day. There is a 30 percent chance winds will
become light and variable or even a light northwest in the 22-01z

Gusts approaching 60 mph are expected at the peak of these strong winds during the afternoon through early evening hours. These strong south winds will shift to the northwest and decrease behind a cold front as it sweeps east across the outlook area late Monday afternoon through early Tuesday. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will exist along and behind the cold front Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
