.SYNOPSIS...A weak weather disturbance will graze northern Utah
tonight, bringing somewhat cooler temperatures to the north for
Friday. A second storm system will bring still cooler temperatures
along with some precipitation to the area late Saturday through
Sunday. High pressure aloft will return for early next week.

.SHORT TERM (Until 12Z Sunday)...The upper ridge currently
positioned across the interior west will weaken later today in
response to the shortwave moving east across the northern Rockies
and northern Great Basin. Low-level cold advection developing
across northern Utah this evening will surge south across much of
the state by Friday morning. Significantly cooler temperatures are
expected, especially across the north Friday afternoon.
Convective precip looks to be limited with this shortwave as the
mid-level cooler air remains well to the north with the best
dynamic support for lift. Any showers/storms that do develop will
likely remain over the higher terrain of far northern and
northeast Utah during the afternoon.
Shortwave ridging Friday night will develop ahead on the next
strengthening upper trough approaching from the Pacific
Northwest/northern Rockies late Saturday. The leading surface
cold front will settle into far northern Utah early Saturday,
then surge south with the arrival of solid low-level cold
advection late Saturday through Saturday night.
Precip will first develop late in the afternoon near the Idaho
border as the circulation center embedded within the trough
settles into eastern Idaho and the colder mid-level air works
into far northern Utah. Not anticipating precip straying too far
beyond the northern third of the forecast area Saturday night as
the best dynamic and thermal support for lift turns to the east
overnight.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Sunday)...The low level cold front continues
to push through the rest of Utah Sunday morning, with the parent
upper trough slowly migrating into Colorado. Sunday afternoon should
be a cooler day area-wide behind this front, with temperatures
dropping below seasonal normals in most locations. Any
shower/thunderstorm activity is expected to be confined to the
northeast quadrant of the forecast area, as the rest of Utah should
generally have too dry an airmass to do much with. Any storms should
taper off Sunday night, as the upper low continues to exit into the
Plains.
Ridging re-builds over the Desert Southwest for the beginning of the
work week, leading to another warming trend. While the airmass in
general fairly dry, there may be enough mid-level moisture to allow
for some isolated mountain convection Tuesday onward. Otherwise, the
rest of the extended looks pretty quiet, with relative high pressure
persisting through at least Wednesday-Thursday.

.AVIATION...Winds at the SLC terminal are expected to switch to the
northwest around 16-18Z, with a slight chance that southerlies
persist through 19Z. Winds will likely become gusty through the day,
with a 30 percent chance of gusts greater than 30 mph.

.FIRE WEATHER...Critical fire weather conditions will once again
develop today, as southwesterly winds increase ahead of an
approaching cold front, with a very dry airmass in place. This front
will move through northern Utah through the daytime hours, switching
winds to gusty northwest along the way, then push through much of
the rest of the state through the evening and into early Friday
morning. This front has limited moisture with it, so only isolated
mountain thunderstorms are expected in the northern half of Utah
today, and the airmass will still be dry enough to create continued
critical conditions with northwest winds in some locations on
Friday.
A brief warming and drying trend is expected Saturday, before
another cold front moves through the state late Saturday into
Sunday. Winds and low relative humidity values could once again
combine to create critical conditions across portions of southern
Utah on Saturday.
