.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will cross the region from the northwest today
before passing to the southeast of the area by this evening. A
stronger secondary cold front arrives this evening followed by
much colder air on strong northwest winds into early Sunday.
Cold high pressure settles in from the west later Sunday into
Monday resulting in dry but cool weather under diminishing
winds.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 AM EDT Saturday...

Swaths of light showers continue to advance east across the
region early this morning ahead of the initial weak cold front
that looks to slowly cross the area through this afternoon.
However most significant rainfall remains over the far west
aided by westerly upslope flow, while seeing majority jump the
Blue Ridge under the downsloping trajectory. Latest short term
guidance shows a gradual transition of the deeper moisture to
the southeast through midday with showers ending west early on,
although lingering southeast into the morning ahead of channeled
shortwave energy with the front. Then should see a lull in
precip this afternoon as we slide in between the first boundary
and ahead of a much stronger upper trough and its associated
secondary surface cold front to the northwest. Thus after high
pops early and low likelys southeast through late morning, will
be cutting back chances to mainly the far northwest this
afternoon. Also given strong westerly flow aloft, expect to see
some breaks develop outside of the far west this afternoon which
given only weak cool advection should allow for rather mild
temperatures espcly east later on. This seen via Mos values near
70 over the southeast and 60s elsewhere except 50s far west so
bumped up highs most spots.

Bigger concerns develop overnight as the much stronger surface
cold front arrives early this evening followed by a digging 5h
trough and associated strong shortwave energy rounding across
the area overnight. Guidance suggests a quick surge in stronger
northwest winds with the frontal passage this evening and then
lingering gradient winds mountains overnight beneath strong cold
advection and subsidence. With lowering inversion levels appears
the best shot at seeing stronger speeds will occur over
southwest sections, but even to some degree along the Blue
Ridge as the best pressure rises tend to coincide with the
deeper 850 mb cold advection. Appears clouds could limit mixing
somewhat espcly at night but given a 40-50 kt jet will hoist a
high wind warning for the higher elevations over the northwest
NC mountains into Grayson county VA, and a wind advisory
elsewhere along/west of the Blue Ridge in Virginia mainly
overnight. Some stronger gusts could slip east into the
foothills espcly if a band of showers develops just ahead of
the front so something to watch.

Otherwise should see downslope clearing develop east of the
mountains overnight with upslope driven rain showers
redeveloping west this evening before changing to snow showers
after midnight as the boundary layer chills. Still looks like an
inch or two on the higher ridges in western Greenbrier county so
holding off on any headlines there for snow attm given the warm
ground. Some flurries/snow showers also possible out to the Blue
Ridge beneath the strong northwest trajectory but should not
amount to much. Finally with rapid cooling aloft, expect the
western ridges to fall below freezing after midnight with an
advection type freeze to take shape despite strong mixing.
Latest guidance still supports a decent period of sub-freezing
values at elevation so switching the going freeze watch to a
warning and adding in a couple more counties to the east
overnight. Appears wont be cold enough for headlines into the
New River Valley with lows overall ranging from the upper 20s
far west to the mid 30s to around 40 going east into the
piedmont.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM EDT Saturday...

Sunday will start our windy with lingering upslope clouds and some
flurries/snow showers west of the Blue Ridge, but conditions will be
gradually improving as the day goes on as high pressure builds in.
Generally mostly sunny and dry but blustery east of the Ridge.

With the center of the high over the Appalachians and central mid
Atlantic region Sunday night, conditions will be very good for
radiational cooling with clear skies and light winds. This will allow
temperatures by Monday morning to be at or below freezing for most of
the region.

Quiet weather continues as the high will drift off to the east on
Monday, allowing for some warmer air to return to the region. However,
low pressure will move from the Great Lakes into New England Monday
night into Tuesday, dragging another cold front through the area late
Tuesday/Tuesday night. Indications are that this front will be rather
moisture starved so no showers are expected.

Temperatures will start the period off quite cold on Sunday with
readings a solid 15 degrees below normal. However gradual warning will
allow temperatures to just shy of seasonal norms by midweek.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 1230 PM EDT Friday...

On Tuesday, the area will still be within a region of northwest
flow on the western extent of a longwave trough that will be
heading east through New England and mid-Atlantic region of the
U.S. Tuesday night into Wednesday, a dry cold front is expected
to cross the area with the most notable change in our weather
picture being a brief increase in gustiness. However, speeds of
the magnitude expected this coming Saturday night are not
forecast.

High pressure will settle over the area in the wake of this dry
cold front through at least Thursday.

Temperatures during the above portion of the forecast are
expected to be around, or slightly cooler than, normal.

Confidence in the above portion of the forecast is moderate to
high.

Thursday night into Friday, confidence in the forecast tanks.
While the GFS and Canadian solution continue with dry high
pressure dominating our weather pattern, their European
counterpart is very agressive in having a southern stream system
heading across the Carolinas, with its associated precipitation
advancing north into and across our region. Given the
variability of the guidance, but not completely discarding the
wetter European solution, our forecast will reflect increasing
low chances of precipitation but not advertise probabilities in
likely category Thursday night into Friday.

.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1253 AM EDT Saturday...

Band of showers now crossing east of the Blue Ridge with
another entering the west attm. These will continue to work east
bringing periods of rain mainly to western locations through
daybreak Saturday followed by lowering ceilings to MVFR or worse
at times at KBLF/KLWB overnight. Could also see a period of
MVFR vsbys in rain/fog across the west with mostly VFR ceilings
and vsbys expected from KROA east where rainfall is expected to
be lighter.

A cold front will cross the Appalachians Saturday morning. Rain
will end after the passage of the front with a return to VFR for
the afternoon. Anticipating a generous coverage of MVFR
ceilings and localized MVFR visibilities Saturday morning mainly
across the mountains, although could see showers linger
southeast into midday with sub-VFR possible there as well.

A secondary front associated with an upper level disturbance
will cross the mountains Saturday night. This will bring a blast
of colder air associated with MVFR Cigs and mountain snow
showers/flurries for late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Extended Discussion...

High pressure on gusty northwest winds builds in behind the
front Saturday night into Sunday. Wind gusts at higher
elevations may be 30 to 40 knots from the northwest. Upslope
rain and snow showers are also possible in southeast West
Virginia, possibly impacting KBLF/KLWB between midnight
Saturday night and noon Sunday.

VFR returns across the region after any residual low clouds
clear Sunday afternoon. High pressure will keep it VFR into
Monday through Wednesday.
