.SYNOPSIS...

After a warm and dry Monday, additional storm systems producing
strong gusty winds and lighter amounts of rain and snow are
expected at times Tuesday through Thursday. Much colder
temperatures are expected Thursday, then dry weather with a
warming trend returns into next weekend. Another storm system may
bring cooler and wetter conditions early next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

After a mild day today...our attention turns to a vigorous set of
storms that will begin to impact the region Tuesday. Highs today
should reach as much as 8-12 degrees above normal with 60s in the
Sierra valleys and 70s in the lower valleys of northeast California
and western Nevada. Light winds will continue today as well. This
mild and dry weather will allow some of the standing water from
the weekend storm to evaporate and let the ground in the lower
valleys begin to dry.

Then we see a shift to a more progressive spring-like pattern. The
next system is taking shape for Tuesday evening. This one is fast
moving and has a limited moisture supply...so any precipitation
will remain quite light. The best chances will be in northeast
California...northwest Nevada...and the northern Sierra. Even
there...amounts will be quite light. A few sprinkles are possible
in western Nevada.

The bigger impact will come from increased winds Tuesday into
Tuesday evening. A 120+ kt jet aloft and mid level winds in excess
of 50 kt will result in ridge winds over 90 mph and valley winds from
20-30 mph with gusts around 55 mph. These winds will become quite
widespread by late Tuesday afternoon. Wind Advisories will be in
effect for all but the Tahoe Basin...where a Lake Wind Advisory
will be in effect...from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday
evening. There will be a brief break in the winds behind this
first system late Tuesday night...but the break is so short-lived
we opted to include the next system in the same advisory.

The second system has a 140+ kt jet and mid level winds just as
strong for Wednesday afternoon. Sustained winds could be even
stronger with this system as the pressure and thermal gradients
tighten ahead of the system. There are also some indications of
minor downslope enhancement late Wednesday afternoon. Stronger
winds are also possible by early Wednesday evening just along the
cold front.

Light precipitation should develop in northeast California and
the northern Sierra by late Wednesday afternoon...but most of the
precipitation will hold off until the evening or later with the
main trough.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday night through next Tuesday...
The idea generally remains the same with the main cold front
moving through Wednesday night. Winds will continue to be gusty in
the evening ahead of the cold front, then diminish a bit behind
it.

A quick burst of snow looks likely in the moist, unstable air
just behind the front. A few inches are possible in northeast
California above 5000 feet, including the Tahoe Basin while Mono
County sees lighter amounts. A bit of snow will fall down to the
valley floors near the 395 corridor, but any accumulation would
likely be above 5000 feet.

Thursday continues to look cold and brisk with highs only in the
30s and 40s. The brisk wind will make it feel even colder. Some
snow/pellet showers are possible north of Highway 50 under the
cold pool aloft. A quick inch or two of snow may occur in the
heaviest showers, with a few thunderstorms also likely.

Quieter, with a warming trend under the short wave ridge for
Friday into Saturday. Winds also look to be generally light under
the ridge. The next system is set to arrive late Sunday into early
next week. The GFS continues to be shallower and more progressive
while the EC is deeper with the system lasting into Tuesday
morning. We are leaning more toward the EC ideas as it has strong
support by its ensemble mean (it has more members too), while the
GEFS members are split between the EC and GFS. Also, climatology
supports slower/more closed systems like the EC during spring.
Still, how cold, wet and windy it will be early next week has yet
to be determined. X

.AVIATION...

Another day of VFR conditions with light winds is in the offing
today. Patchy freezing fog is possible early this morning and that
could briefly reduce the visibility at KTRK. The chance is about
40%.

Gusty winds begin to develop Tuesday as another fast moving system
heads toward the forecast area. By Tuesday afternoon gusts over
the Sierra could be in the 80-90 kt range while winds in the
valleys reach 20-25 kt with gusts of 40-45 kt. This means
turbulence and the potential for low level wind shear. This system
has a limited amount of moisture...but showers are possible in the
northern Sierra and northeast California. These could briefly
reduce cigs/vsbys to MVFR or less with mountain obscurations.

Another fast moving system is slated to move through Wednesday
evening into early Thursday. Similar gusty winds are likely with
it as well and winds over the Sierra could be even stronger. This
system has a bit more moisture so lower cigs/vsbys are more likely
in the Sierra and northeast California.
