What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Apr 11, 3:26 AM EDT, 18 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Apr 11, 3:26 AM EDT, 18 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 326 AM EDT Wed Apr 11 2018 .SYNOPSIS... A sprawling area of high pressure over the Appalachians today will move off the east coast tonight. Meanwhile, low pressure moving through the Great Lakes will lift a warm front north of the region tonight. This front will settle southward through the area as a backdoor cold front on Saturday night. During this time, a complex area of low pressure and its associated fronts will move from the Ohio Valley to the Middle Atlantic on Monday, then into New England on Tuesday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... Surface high pressure extends northeastward from the northwestern Gulf Coast region to Ohio Valley and northern Mid-Atlantic states early this morning. The high will build eastward while a weak surface trough develops on the lee side of the Appalachians this afternoon. Clouds ahead of a low- to mid-level shortwave trough has expanded northeastward from the central Appalachians-Potomac Highlands during the overnight. These clouds will quickly spread into northeastern MD/eastern PA early this morning and eventually into the coastal plain this afternoon. Sky cover forecast was somewhat challenging as it will likely be highly variable but given the coverage of clouds upstream of the region and latest model trends, the forecast has trended a bit more pessimistic (i.e., cloudier), especially west of I-95. Some of the guidance had outputted light QPF over northeastern PA late this morning/afternoon but am not sold on measurable precip today given how dry the airmass will be (maybe an isolated sprinkle). The better chance, albeit a low probability, for rain showers looks to hold off until tonight when stronger low-level isentropic lift arrives. Forecast high temperatures this afternoon are generally in the low to mid 50s (except 40s in the southern Poconos). && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM THURSDAY/... High pressure is expected to be centered near the NC coast tonight. Our region starts to lose the influence of the ridge as a weak surface trough approaches from the west. West-southwesterly flow near 850 mb will advect warmer air aloft into the region tonight. Models generally indicate low-level isentropic lift/convergence maximized near the trough that could be enough to produce a band of light showers tonight across northeastern PA and northern NJ. PoPs were kept low (20-30 percent) in part to due to uncertainty in timing and location of these showers as well as the sparse coverage and light intensity of precip that is anticipated. Low temperatures range from the mid 30s in northeastern PA and northwestern NJ to low 40s for the urban I-95 corridor and coastal communities. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Above average temperatures are expected during this period, particularly Friday and Saturday, with the highest chance of widespread precipitation Sunday night into Monday. There is the potential for gusty winds on Thursday. Steepening low-level lapse rates and a strong southwest wind field could lead to gusts up to 40 mph, mainly in the coastal plain. Fairly benign weather Friday and Saturday, with temperatures well into the 70s and perhaps around 80 at some locations. Chances for rain increase Sunday night into Monday with the approach of a complex low pressure system. Would not be surprised to see a widespread 1+ inch rainfall amounts during this period. A return to fair weather and cooler temperatures on Tuesday && .AVIATION /07Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Through Today...VFR. Light and variable winds in the pre-dawn hours will become SWly today, increasing to around 10 kt with gusts of 15- 20 kt between about 18Z and 23Z today. Cloud deck with CIGs 6-8 kft AGL will overspread the region this morning. Tonight...VFR. Chance for SHRA (mainly at RDG and ABE) too low to put in 06/12Z TAFs. SW winds 5-10 kt. OUTLOOK... Wednesday night through Saturday night...VFR conditions. Southwest winds on Thursday may gust 30+ knots during the afternoon. High Confidence. Sunday...MVFR is possible late in the day, especially ABE and RDG, with the arrival of showers. Otherwise VFR. Low confidence. && .MARINE... Today...N-NE winds 5-10 kt this morning will become light/variable toward midday, then S-SEly this afternoon. Locally higher winds in associated with an Ambrose jet could reach 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt in the NJ coastal waters late in the afternoon. Seas 2 to 3 ft. Tonight...S-SW winds 10-15 kt expected for most of the waters tonight. Despite winds strengthening to 25-30 kt within the nearest 1000 ft above the surface, poor mixing over the cool waters should inhibit these winds from reaching the surface. Seas in our coastal waters are forecast to be 2 to 3 ft this evening, building to 3 to 4 ft overnight. OUTLOOK... Thursday and Thursday night..SCA in effect for all coastal waters. Southwest winds will increase, and there may also be some brief gale force gusts, especially Delaware Bay and some of the near- shore mesonets. Friday through Sunday...Southerly flow will continue and seas will remain elevated, with SCA conditions possible at times. && .FIRE WEATHER... Southwest flow on Thursday will increase with wind gusts 30-40 mph possible across portions of the area. In addition, fuel moistures are forecast to hover between 8 and 10 pct. Despite the windy conditions and low fuel moistures, Relative Humidity values are expected to remain AOA 35 pct. Therefore, we do not anticipate conditions conducive to the spread of wild fires at this time. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
