A strong storm system arrives Tuesday, bringing heavy mountain
snow, light to moderate lowland snow, and locally gusty winds.
Unsettled weather will continue most of the week with periods of
mountain snow and a mix of rain and snow in the valleys.

...A strong wet storm will bring winter driving conditions
Tuesday to most of the region...
Tonight through Wednesday...Satellite indicates a deep fetch of
Pacific moisture ready to pile-drive into the northwestern US.
Tonight will be a relatively benign and seasonably cool period
with the main hazards being patchy fog and the potential for wet
roads to freeze in places by dawn. Meanwhile the incoming Pacific
fetch will be moistening up the air mass with thickening clouds
aloft.
On Tuesday a warm front will form over the forecast area allowing
this moisture to efficiently enhance into a broad area of light
precipitation. It will take much of the day for the warm air aloft
to crawl northward through the Columbia Basin. Fortunately there
is no arctic air mass trapped in the basin as is often the case
with these deep winter systems...so the prospect for freezing
rain is pretty minimal with this warm front...not to say there
won't be a brief period sometime/somewhere during the
morning...but the antecedent temperature profiles suggest this
will be more of an initial snow period mixing with and changing to
simple rain during the day...but maybe not until late in the day
for the northern basin locations and potentially remaining all
snow in the northern valleys.
So...Tuesday will be a messy day for most of the region...from
heavy mountain snow (near certainty) to probable heavy snow in the
valleys of the northern mountains (high confidence) and at least
light deep basin snow in the morning turning to rain (high
confidence). The primary uncertainty will reside over the rising
terrain of the eastern basin where models as usual differ on how
aggressive the movement of warm tongue aloft will be. Morning snow
is a near certainty. It is probable that a change-over to rain
will occur but maybe not until early to mid afternoon in the
Spokane area and probably later in the Coeur D'Alene/Post Falls
area. Thus there is the prospect of a couple inches of wet snow
coating the roads in the morning...mushed down into a layer of ice
in places...then becoming saturated...slushy and slippery as it
absorbs rain for the afternoon Commute period.
These likely conditions mandate a raft of winter weather
highlights which will generally begin Tuesday morning and continue
through the day in much the basin and into Tuesday evening in the
mountains. . A strong cold front will pass through the region
from west to east during the evening hours...effectively tapering
off widespread precipitation except for lingering snow showers
driving into the Idaho panhandle mountains and slopping over the
Cascade crest.
This front will also bring an increasing threat of windy
conditions Tuesday night and Wednesday morning on the exposed
terrain of the Columbia Basin. The gradient and gust potential may
call for a Wind Advisory but confidence is not high enough to
commit to yet. It will be windy on Wednesday across the
basin...just not yet certain how windy at this time. Despite the
wind Wednesday does look like a break period between storms with a
few lingering orographic showers and largely dry in the basin with
high temperatures mild enough to melt off much of the basins snow

Wednesday night and Thursday: Very progressive and dynamic
weather pattern continues with the third in a series of wet weather
systems moving through. These systems have had well maintained taps
into subtropical moisture and a good amount of low level southerly
flow kicking in as they pass through allowing for lower elevation
snow levels to rise at times and allow for a transition of valley
snow to rain becoming the norm of late.
Friday through Monday: The progressive and dynamic weather pattern
continues. Bulk of the interval the jet stream is within close
proximity and nearly overhead with a warmer low level southerly flow
occurring more often than not. This would justifying continued
moderate pops with wording emphasizing snow changing to rain in a
good number of lowland and valley locations. Forecast temperatures
on the warm side of what would be considered normal for this time of
year.
