Warning, which is in effect until 6 AM EST Saturday. The Wind
Advisory is no longer in effect.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front stalls within the area today and gradually
dissipates. Deep low pressure will impact the area from late
tonight into Saturday. High pressure centered in Southeast
Canada slowly moves into the region Saturday night and through
the remainder of the weekend. The high continues to build in
Monday and then weakens Tuesday. This will give way to an
approaching coastal storm system towards the middle of next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Slight changes made to temperatures, dewpoints, and cloud
coverage to better match observed trends.

Weak low pressure moves into coastal Maine, with a weak cold
front into this morning. The low and front weaken, with a
lingering frontal boundary as it stalls within the region today.
This frontal boundary will eventually dissipate. Light and
variable winds will continue.

Dry conditions are expected most of the day. This will be
coinciding with some subtle mid level ridging and negative
vorticity advection so expecting some sun filtered through high
clouds. More mild temperatures expected, which are forecast to
be well into the 50s.

The next rainfall will hold off until late afternoon ahead of
the strengthening low pressure west of the area for places north
and west of NYC. This will be when height falls return ahead of
the shortwave. This shortwave will be deepening as it
approaches the Appalachians.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Storm track consensus is increasing, with the low currently
expected to remain south of Long Island thru the event.

The 00z model data is clustering the rapidly deepening low
invof the benchmark at 18z Fri. This grouping includes the GEM,
GFS including ensembles, and ECMWF. The NAM is farther n, only
a few miles from Nantucket. The sly track as a result has been
favored for the fcst.

The mid 970s low over the benchmark, dropping into the 960s as
the sys drifts sewd late Fri, will produce high winds across the
area. The watch was upgraded to a wrng for ern CT and LI, with
the watch expanded to most of the remaining area. The height of
the storm for wind still looks to be aft 18Z thru the first half of
Fri ngt. 2k ft agl winds in the GFS are over 74kt at Montauk, so
gusts have been set at 70 mph in the wrng.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Orange and wrn
Passaic counties. The dynamic cooling and advection of a colder
airmass cannot be ignored. The NAM, although an outlier wrt
track, is more aggressive with the magnitude of cooling with
the sys. Collaboration with WPC suggests the NAM historically
overdoes the amount of cooling, so this output is not favored.
However, thermal profile margins of around a degree or two are
the difference between hvy rain and hvy snow with this storm.
With the track consensus consolidating, more snow was added to
the fcst for nwrn zones, particularly the higher elevations.
Although the probability is low based on the 00z model data
being used, any downward trend in the thermal profile could lead
to much more snowfall across the majority of the area. A strong
cstl front should set up across sern CT and ern LI, so areas w
of this boundary will be the ones to watch.

Rain and snow winds down Fri ngt, then chcs for lgt rain and
snow lingering for the first part of Sat. Winds will gradually
diminish as the low continues to track sewd over the atlc.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Strong coastal low with center forecast to slowly move farther
southeast into the Atlantic. This will slowly continue moving east
into the Atlantic for the rest of the weekend and into early next
week.

N-NE gusty winds continue Saturday night but will be on a decreasing
trend from NW to SE as surface high pressure builds down into the
upper Great Lakes. This area of high pressure will continue moving
eastward into the Northeast for the rest of the weekend. The whole
time the center of the high stays in Southeast Canada.

The axis of the high pressure area will move along the Eastern
Seaboard early next week. Then, the high will weaken Tuesday and
give way to another coastal storm system approaching near the
region for the midweek period.

Dry weather returns Saturday night and lasts through Monday night
while temperatures are forecast to be normal values for this time of
year. Expect winds to gradually subside late weekend into early next
week. Next event towards the middle of next week looks to be a
combination of rain and snow. A lot of uncertainty still in the
works with this system with dependency on the strength, speed and
location of the central low associated with the storm system.
Therefore, the amounts of rain and snow will likely vary with
subsequent forecasts.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Low pressure develops to the south tonight and intensifies
southeast of Montauk on Friday into a strong "nor'easter."

VFR into the early evening. Light rain moves in around 00Z from
west to east. Conditions fall to IFR overnight in rain.

IFR ceilings and visibilities continue Friday morning in rain,
or a rain snow mix.

Northeast winds is expected into the evening. Speeds increase
overnight as winds back to the north/northeast toward morning.
North/NW winds are expected later Friday morning.

.Friday afternoon...IFR with RASN to SN expanding east through
the day. Winds NNW 20-30KT with gusts 40-50 KT in the afternoon
and continuing through the overnight. Highest winds eastern
Long Island and Southeastern CT with gusts 60KT possible.
.Saturday...Precipitation ending in the morning with conditions
becoming VFR. Wind N 20-30kt with gusts 30-40KT and diminishing.
.Sunday-Monday...VFR.
.Tuesday...VFR with rain possible late or at night.

.MARINE...
For today, the pressure gradient will remain weak. The light and
variable surface winds will make for seas not changing too much.
Conditions below SCA criteria are expected for today. Increasing
pressure gradient tonight will lead to winds increasing and seas
building.

Storm force winds develop on Fri and diminish to gale on Sat.
There is a potential for hurricane force gusts on the ocean
during the height of the storm Fri eve.

After the storm, Saturday night will still have forecast wind gusts
meeting at least SCA with some gales on the eastern ocean forecast
and perhaps Eastern Long Island Sound and Eastern Long Island Bays.
Overall though, winds will be trending down as that point, the
strong coastal storm will be slowly moving farther southeast into
the Atlantic. Forecast wind gusts trend below SCA on Western Long
Island Sound, South Shore Bays and NY Harbor for the rest of the
weekend with other waters staying in the low end (25-30kt) SCA range
for wind gusts. For the ocean, the low end SCA gusts extend into
Monday and trend below SCA levels Monday night. However, the ocean
seas will likely remain at SCA levels throughout the whole
period.

.HYDROLOGY...
Around 2 inches of rain/liquid equivalent are forecast with the
storm Thursday night through Friday night. Higher amounts on the
order of 3 inches are possible with this event depending on where
banded precipitation sets up. A Flood Watch is in effect for
all but Orange and Western Passaic County, where a transition to
snow is now appearing more likely. Flooding of smaller streams
and rivers as well as poor drainage flooding is possible.
Coastal flooding may enhance the flood threat.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A powerful coastal storm will impact the region tonight through
Saturday with 24-36 hrs of N/NE Gale to storm force winds.
Impacts could even linger into Sunday as the powerful storm
slowly departs.

With E/NE winds just ramping up this evening, only brief and
localized minor flooding is expected at this time along Western
LI sound and Southern bays of Queens/LI.

Surge guidance has come into better agreement with moderate
coastal flood thresholds being reached along the southern bays
of Nassau County and Jamaica Bay for Friday morning high tides.
Elsewhere generally minor coastal impacts expected.

There is quite a bit of model spread for the Friday Night high
tidal cycle, with competing factors of increasing energetic
easterly swells and ekman pumping versus strong offshore winds.
At this point a middle of the road approach has been continued,
with potential for moderate coastal flooding for the southern
bays of LI and Queens and twin forks of LI and even for locally
moderate impacts along the north shore of LI due to to 3 to 5
ft wave action. Elsewhere generally minor impacts are expected.

With only around 1 to 1 1/2 ft surge needed for minor flooding
and 2 to 2 1/2 ft for moderate flooding during the high tide
cycles Saturday into Saturday Night, the potential for several
tidal cycles of minor to moderate coastal flooding continues.
Ekman pumping and energetic easterly swell energy along with
weakening offshore flow should help water levels continue to
build along the coast. It is not out of the question that this
threat continues into Sunday. At this time there is only a low
probability of isolated major coastal flooding during Saturday
high tides for the south shore bays. NOTE: For those with
concerns along the bays areas, if moderate water levels are
exceeded for several tidal cycles, flooding may linger well
after high tides as well.

Finally, the USGS coastal hazard viewer is depicting potential
for a prolonged threat for areas of dune erosion and localized
washovers Sat thru Mon.

Confidence and clarity on local coastal impact details for
Friday Night into Saturday Night should increase over the next
24 hrs, so continue to monitor subsequent forecasts for the
latest.
