.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure slides slowly offshore through Wednesday.
Meanwhile, low pressure develops off the southeast coast Wednesday
and rapidly deepens as it tracks north, passing east of the local
area on Thursday. Arctic high pressure follows behind the
departing storm system for Friday into Saturday. A warmup then
ensues late in the weekend into early next week ahead of an
approaching frontal system.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Minor changes were made with this update to reflect the latest
trends in observations and guidance. The forecast appears on
track.

Northern stream shortwave ridging builds over the area overnight,
with subsidence will allowing for a clear sky. 1 to 2 inches of
snow pack still exists across the area, especially across the
outlying areas. Radiational cooling will be more significant for
these areas, allowing them to drop to around 0. Wind chill
values will be in the single digits above zero for the most
part. The outlying areas will see sub- zero wind chills, with
values as much as 10 below possible well inland.

With high pressure offshore, a light return southwesterly flow will
develop, which will allow for temperatures to be not quite as
cold on Wednesday. However, these temperatures will still be
well below normal by about 10 degrees. Highs will range from the
middle 20s inland, to at or slightly above freezing for the
Twin Forks of Long Island. New York City metro will top out in
the upper 20s. Wind chill values in the lower to middle 20s
expected. Subsidence from shortwave ridging ahead of the next
system should keep things dry.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
** Accumulating snow expected Wednesday Night into Thursday **

Winter Storm Watches remain in effect for Suffolk County in NY
and southern Middlesex and New London Counties in Connecticut.

Models continue to be in decent agreement with the polar jet
digging down into the SE US Wednesday, following a strong
shortwave/jet streak diving south from the Canadian Plains, and
interacting with a separate vigorous shortwave diving through
the southern plains. Although there is good agreement in the
mass fields, subtle differences in the timing/location of
phasing of the above shortwave energies as they round the base
of the digging trough, as well as the interaction of the polar
trough with the second shortwave (determining trough tilt), will
be key in track/timing of an explosively developing northward
moving southern low on Thursday.

At the Surface, low pressure develops off the Florida peninsula
and tracks towards Nova Scotia while rapidly intensifying
through Thursday. While some strength and track differences
remain, there continues to be growing consensus amongst the
models, taking the low near or just east of the 40/70 benchmark
Thursday afternoon. Overall, it appears it will be cold enough
for an all snow event with the best chance of 6 or more inches
of snow across eastern portions of Long Island and Connecticut.

Main question is what kind of shift in the track this storm
takes. Any shift to the west, would mean heavier snow for more
of the CWA. A shift to the east would mean less snow. This will
need to be watched over the next few model runs.

The other potential hazard with this storm will be strong
winds, forecast model blend is pointing to the potential for 30
to 40 mph winds along the coast Thu aft/eve. There is potential
for 45-50 mph gusts for eastern coastal areas, if closer NAM
track and stronger NAM wind field verifies. This would also lead
to blowing and drifting snow along with reduced visibility
issues.

The situation remains fluid based on model spread, with
potential for these numbers to go down, but it seems more so
upwards based on model trends. This potential is reflected in
latest WFO/WPC snow probs, with low-moderate prob of greater
than 6 inches of snow across E LI/SE CT, and a 1 in 10 chance of
seeing more than 8-14 inches of snow across the entire area.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
** Potentially dangerous cold for Friday into Saturday **

Global models are in good agreement with a strong surge of
arctic air arriving behind the departing storm system.
Temperatures Friday into Saturday will average nearly 25 degrees
below normal with highs in the upper single digits to lower
teens, and lows below zero across the interior and the single
digits near the coast. Furthermore, strong NW winds both days
will produce below zero wind chills, which at night will range
from -15 to -25. Wind child advisories are likely, possibly even
warning level across interior locations.

Thereafter, temperatures will moderate through early next week
as a frontal system approaches with a strong return SW flow.
Temperatures will likely rise to above freezing both Monday and
Tuesday with chance of precipitation. Initially, there will be a
chance of snow all locations on Monday, but warming aloft will
allow for a transition to rain at the coast and a wintry mix
inland. With the arctic high passing to the south of the region
over the weekend, this will hinder cold air damming along the
lee of the Appalachians.

Models also differ in the timing and progression of the frontal
system with a potential frontal wave Monday night into Tuesday.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure over the region moves offshore this afternoon as
low pressure develops east of Florida. The low deepens rapidly
and tracks along the southeastern coast to the mid Atlantic
coast tonight.

VFR through this evening. MVFR conditions developing along the
coast and at the NYC metro terminals around 06Z Thursday. There
is still some uncertainty as to the timing of the onset of snow,
which may be a couple of hours later.

Westerly winds under 10 kt become light and variable this
morning and then briefly become south to southeast in the
afternoon, before becoming northeast and increasing tonight.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Late Tonight-Thursday evening...MVFR conditions in light snow,
with conditions possibly lowering to IFR toward 12Z as snow
becomes steadier. Snow with IFR conditions through Thursday.
Then conditions improving Thursday evening as the snow ends from
west to east. N to NE winds 15-20 kt G20-30 kt by early
Thursday morning, becoming NW 20-30 kt G35-45 kt Thursday
afternoon and evening.
.Late Thursday night-Sunday...VFR. WNW G30-35 kt possible
thru Friday aftn.

.MARINE...

Winds diminish overnight as high pressure moves over the
waters, with gusts over all waters falling under 25 kt by
Wednesday morning. Waves will also diminish, with 5 ft waves
expected through late tonight for the ocean waters. Waves of 4
ft or less expected Wednesday.

Tranquil conditions will then prevail into Wednesday evening,
with a light pressure gradient over the waters. Winds then
begin to increase later Wednesday night as low pres explosively
develops and strengthens as it moves north through the western
Atlantic.

Gales are likely to develop Thursday as low pressure
approaches, with potential for some storm force gusts on the
eastern ocean waters Thursday aft/eve. Gales then likely to
continue through Friday and potentially into Friday Night in
wake of low pressure with strong caa. SCA conditions may linger
into Sunday on the ocean waters.

coastal flooding.
