A wind chill advisory has been issued for portions of west central and central Minnesota between midnight and noon on Sunday. The wind chill advisory will expand to include the rest of central and east central Minnesota, as well as a portion of southwest and south central Minnesota from 4 am to noon on Sunday. The wind chill advisory will include areas west of a line from Taylors Falls, Wisconsin, to Stillwater, Lakeville, Mankato and Fairmont Minnesota. This includes all of the Twin Cities Metro area. First, light snow will develop this morning, and spread east across most of central and southern Minnesota, and into west central Wisconsin. The heavier snowfall will occur north of interstate 94, with amounts of 1 to 3 inches. Locally 3 to 5 inches will occur in Rusk County where the winter weather advisory has been issued. Much colder air and increasing winds will drop wind chill values well below zero later tonight. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1049 PM CST Fri Feb 2 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 308 PM CST Fri Feb 2 2018 Stratus clouds continue to expand north and east across the area this afternoon ahead of an approaching warm front. Expect the weak echoes on radar to begin translating to snow toward evening as isentropic lift strengthens a bit. Given snow ratios are in the 20-25 range, even the 0.01-0.02 of depicted QPF would yield a quick two tenths to half inch this evening. Given the increased cloud cover and southerly flow, should see temps in most areas stay above zero overnight. Saturday the inverted trough noses into Iowa and southern Wisconsin. Model agreement is still less than fantastic, with the NAM featuring the better snow north of the forecast area. However, the Hi-res consensus favors areas along/north of I-94 with categorical pops and 1-3 inch snow accumulations in general. Could see closer to 4 in our far northeastern counties (particularly Rusk county), but at this time there isn't enough confidence to issue an advisory. Have also increased forecast highs for Saturday, with teens to upper 20s looking probable. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 308 PM CST Fri Feb 2 2018 Precip looks like it very well may linger into Saturday evening, so have adjusted POPS accordingly. Skies look to clear out Sunday as we are invaded by the colder air. Anticipate highs mostly in the single digits above zero. Those temperatures combined with winds in the 7-10 knot range, will most likely generate wind chills in the -10F to -20F range during the day and evening Sunday. We do look to have cloud cover move in Sunday night, and given this is more of a glancing blow with the cold air, Monday morning temps look a little "warmer" than they have. We still expect sub- zero readings over most of the area, but most locations not colder than -10F. Given winds will still be around 5-7 mph, wind chills in the -15F to -25F range will be possible overnight into Monday morning. After that, another wave/trough look to clip southern Minnesota on Monday. The highest chances appear to exist along and south of I-90. Only minor tweaks have been made to the remainder of the long term forecast, with continued below normal temperatures until Thursday when the next clipper possibly arrives. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1049 PM CST Fri Feb 2 2018 00Z GFS has not changed its tune much, so continued to follow it. 00Z NAM is still north with the snow Saturday, but it did come south, closer to the rest of the guidance. MKT/RWF look like they will miss this event, with the only changes everywhere else being to slow the arrival of the snow an hour or two. Still anticipate about a 6 hour window with 1-2sm vis snow, with a narrow 2-4 hour period within having an occasional vis getting down to 1/2sm, though expect lowest prevailing vis to be 3/4sm, as it normally is with clippers. KMSP...Only minor changes to the TAF. Basically delayed everything by an hour, with the heaviest snow looking to be more 14z to 18z per the HRRR. In this window, look for snowfall rates between 1/2" and 3/4" per hour. Southern gradient of the snow band looks to be near the Twin Cities, with it not out of the question we see around 3" of snow up at Anoka that goes to a dusting at Lakeville. 2"-3" of accumulation still looks reasonable for MSP. /OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/ Sun...VFR.
