  Saturday evening, highest on exposed south facing beaches. The
  maximum high tides will be around 7 feet between 7 PM and 9 PM
  PDT each evening. 

* IMPACTS...Minor coastal flooding is possible over low-lying

  significant damage is expected. Dangerous rip currents are

.SYNOPSIS...05/1025 PM.

Temperatures will be well above normal this week. Hot temperatures
and gusty northerly winds across southern Santa Barbara County
and the mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties tonight and
Monday night will result in critical fire conditions for some
areas. Patchy coastal low clouds and fog are possible tonight and
again later in the week.

.SHORT TERM (SUN-WED)...05/849 PM.

***UPDATE***

Northwest winds starting to pick up this evening in the Wind
Advisory areas, and look to be peak right around the lower-end of
the criteria. A patch of low clouds has formed right on the Los
Angeles this evening. It could scour out in a few hours, or it
could be a sign that the marine layer is not ready to give into
the building ridge just yet. A weak eddy is expected tonight which
leans the possible outcomes towards cloudy, so went ahead and
updated the forecast to include low clouds through Monday morning.
With onshore gradients turning nearly neutral, there is a chance
for dense fog to form with low visibilities as well. This marine
layer should also lower the expected LA beach temperatures a
little, but should not affect the valleys. Otherwise, forecast is
on track for tomorrow with a healthy 5 to 10 degree warm up and
more widespread and stronger northwest winds. Looking a little
further out, a little concerned for Wednesday's forecast. With the
northwest winds quickly weakening Tuesday night, SE winds
strengthen and expand from San Diego to Santa Maria. This would
bring a noticeable dose of cooling to all coastal areas and maybe
some valleys. Something to keep in mind as we enter our latest
heat wave.

***From Previous Discussion***

Overall, 12Z models in very good synoptic agreement through the
period. At upper levels, ridge will build over the area tonight
and Monday then remain entrenched over the area Tuesday and
Wednesday. Near the surface, increasing northerly flow will
develop tonight through Tuesday then will shift to weakly onshore
on Wednesday.

Forecast-wise, two main issues will be temperatures and winds.
First with respect to temperatures, the area is still on track for
a significant heat wave in the short term. With upper ridge
strengthening overhead and northerly flow, all areas will warm up
nicely Monday and Tuesday. Based on latest Heat Risk forecasts,
have upgraded Excessive Heat Watches to Excessive Heat Warnings
and Heat Advisories. Between Monday and Tuesday, Tuesday will be
the warmest day as morning gradients actually turn weakly
offshore. On Wednesday, will expect some minor cooling for most
areas although temperatures will remain well above normal.

As for winds, northerly gradients will be increasing tonight
through Monday night. So, advisory-level Sundowner winds are
expected across southern Santa Barbara county and north winds are
expected across the Interstate 5 corridor. So, will issue a Wind
Advisory for this areas from tonight through Monday night with
peak gusts between 40 and 50 MPH. There may be some lull in the
speeds during the day on Monday, but the winds will pick up again
Monday evening. On Tuesday, the winds will begin to shift back to
a typical onshore direction and should remain below advisory
levels Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.

As for clouds, most areas should remain mostly clear through
Wednesday. The only exception will be this afternoon where some
stratus/fog will linger along the coast of Ventura county and
Santa Barbara county. However by this evening, will expect this
stratus to dissipate.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...05/132 PM.

For the extended forecast, 12Z models continue to exhibit good
synoptic agreement. At upper levels, ridge will strengthen a bit
on Thursday then will slowly weaken Friday through Sunday. Near
the surface, onshore flow will gradually return and strengthen
across the area.

Forecast-wise, nothing too exciting expected during the period.
With upper ridge strengthening a bit on Thursday, most areas
should be a couple degrees warmer (especially away from the
beaches). However all areas should exhibit a slight cooling trend
Friday through Sunday.

With onshore flow returning, the marine layer stratus/fog should
eventually make a return to the area. At this time, will forecast
a return of stratus/fog to the Central coast as early as Thursday
morning and to areas south of Point Conception by Saturday
morning. Of course, given the nature of marine layer formation,
confidence in this timing is low.

The other thing of minor note is that there may be some hint of
monsoonal moisture moving into the area during the period. At this
time, do not expect this to amount to much other than the
possibility of some afternoon cumulus clouds over the higher
terrain.

.AVIATION...06/0634Z.

At 0515Z at KLAX...the marine layer was 1100 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was 2300 feet with a temperature of 29C.

High confidence in inland TAFs. Lower confidence in coastal TAFs
(xcp KSBA) with a 30 percent chc of LIFR cigs and vis 08Z-16Z.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF through 16Z then high
confidence. There is a 30 percent chc of LIFR cigs and vis 08Z-
16Z. There is a 30 percent chc of a 6kt east wind component
through 16Z.

KBUR...High in TAF. A 20 percent chc of LLWS +/-10 kt through
16Z.

.MARINE...05/858 PM.

Updates to the forecast include converting the Gale Watch to Gale
Warnings from Point Sal to San Nicolas Island for Monday. The Gale
Watch for areas north of there, went with a high end Small Craft
Advisory (SCA). Canceled the SCA for the nearshore Central Coast
waters as the winds just haven't materialize. Also canceled the
SCA for the Santa Barbara Channel. Gusty winds are possible close
to shore east of Goleta, but should not be widespread or make it
out to the weather buoy.

There is a better chance for SCA conditions in these two areas
tomorrow as the NW flow peaks in intensity and coverage. Short
period seas will also peak everywhere Monday and Monday night from
these winds. Winds will weaken Tuesday and Wednesday, but should
be just strong enough for a SCA over the outer Central Coast
waters Tuesday and Tuesday night. Dense fog will be possible
through Tuesday.

Widespread SE winds are likely Wednesday and Thursday, with 15 to 20
KT possible through the passages at times. Large

A large SSE swell is still possible Thursday through Saturday.
With high tides over 7 feet during this period, strong harbor surges
and some coastal flooding is possible.

.FIRE WEATHER...05/327 PM.

Gusty north winds will impact portions of Southwest California through
early Tuesday, strongest across the Santa Barbara south coast and mountains
as well as the Interstate 5 corridor of  the Los Angeles and Ventura county
mountains. The strongest north winds in these areas will occur this evening
through early Tuesday with gusts generally in the 35 to 45 mph range.  As
the northerly winds develop, very dry air is expected to move into the area,
especially on Monday when single digit humidities will be widespread across
the region. In addition, there will be very poor humidity recoveries
across the foothills, mountains, and wind prone areas tonight and
Monday night. A significant warm-up is expected on Monday
and Tuesday when triple digit heat will become widespread across the
region, with very warm temperatures continuing across inland areas
through much of the week.

The long duration of hot and dry conditions combined with very
dry fuels will bring elevated fire danger through much of the week
across Southwest California, including the potential for large
vertical plume growth during the afternoon hours. The most
critical fire weather conditions will occur across the Santa
Barbara south coast and mountains, as well as the Interstate 5
corridor in the Los Angeles and Ventura county mountains and Santa
Clarita Valley where gusty northwest to north winds will combine
with the hot and very dry conditions, resulting in Red Flag
Warnings for these areas. Areas under a Red Flag Warning have the
potential for very rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior,
including long range spotting due to the gusty winds. Everyone
needs to use extreme caution near fire ignition sources.
