Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 243 AM PDT Wed Apr 11 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Look for mild conditions today along with breezy to windy conditions for all areas. Rain showers will develop out ahead of the next storm system set to affect northern and central Nevada this afternoon through Friday. The rain will quickly changeover to snow as colder air filters in from behind the front. Breezy to very windy conditions are expected tonight and Friday morning. High pressure will bring quieter weather for the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday. Current model solutions depict an upper level ridge axis sliding off to the east with the next weather system entering the fray in the Pacific Northwest. For today, expect mainly sunny skies in the morning with increasing clouds through the day as mid and high level clouds start moving into the area. High temperatures will generally be in the 60s for most areas in the north with some 70 degree readings in the central part of the state. Winds will be breezy to windy, but should stay below advisory criteria for the most part. Look for patchy blowing dust to cover much of the area during this time. For later this afternoon and tonight, winds will stay breezy during the overnight. The aforementioned next weather system will push across the area beginning in the afternoon with rain showers overspreading the area in the evening. The clouds and winds will keep things warm during the first part of the night, but a potent cold front will march through the area during the morning hours Thursday. This will usher in colder air and a quick changeover to snow. Due to the warmer conditions we've experienced recently, expect many roads to become wet with only the higher passes and summits seeing accumulations. Storm total snow accumulations of one to three inches can be expected. Winds will be breezy to very windy, especially along the leeside of mountain ranges. As such, will continue the high wind watch as GEFS anomalies of 4-5 SD, with a small swatch of 5+ SD, can be seen over the forecast area. In addition, numerical guidance is showing strong sustained winds in West Wendover and Tonopah. Highs on Thursday will feel like March instead of April with readings mainly in the upper 30s to mid 40s. The winds will begin to diminish late Thursday night into Friday morning for much of the region, save for the West Wendover area, which is expected to see continued strong northwest winds. There is a chance for isolated snow showers but not much in the way of accumulation is expected. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s with highs on Friday ranging in the 40s and 50s as a high pressure ridge builds in but brings a stiff north wind. .LONG TERM...Friday night through next Wednesday. Models are in very good agreement through the long term period and the flow remains progressive. A shortwave ridge moves through the region on Friday night and Saturday which will warm temperatures to around normal. Southwest flow then returns Saturday night ahead of the next system. Its looks to be another windy day on Sunday with the warm air advection warming temperatures even further. A cold front moves through on Sunday night which will quickly drop snow levels to the valley floors and snow showers look to continue into Monday in both northern and central Nevada. Snow showers will decrease in coverage Monday night and Tuesday and mainly be confined to northern counties. Temperatures will drop below normal Monday through Tuesday only to warm again on Wednesday to near normal as southwest flow returns. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions continue with west to southwest winds gusting to around 30 kts expected at all stations this afternoon and evening. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... An approaching storm system will bring increasing winds to northern and central Nevada today. Look for southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Blowing dust will be prevalent over much of the area in the afternoon with visibilities dropping to a mile in spots. In addition, rain showers will develop later this morning in Humboldt county and spread east through the day. By later tonight and tomorrow morning, a sharp cold front will march east that will quickly change any rain showers to snow showers. Further, strong winds and much cooler conditions can be expected Thursday into Friday. An inch or two of snow could fall in the valleys of northern Humboldt and Elko counties by Thursday morning with lesser amounts in other valleys farther south. Strong and gusty west to northwest winds will produce dangerous crosswinds on west to east roadways - use caution if driving in high profile vehicles. Light snow showers are expected to linger across northeast Nevada on Friday before dry and warmer weather returns to the state over the weekend. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Monday.
