.SHORT TERM...
With surface high pressure well to the east, onshore flow has
returned today. A boundary of more humid and unstable air moved in
from the Gulf this morning. Scattered showers and some storms are
expected to continue this evening and tonight. PW in this airmass is
now up a bit above 1.5 inches, so these storms have proven to be
locally efficient rain makers.
Instability of around 500 J/KG CAPE has come in over land with the
Gulf air and there is about 40 kts of 0 to 6km shear. Overall the
threat of strong to marginally severe storms is very low, but gusty
winds and maybe even some small hail from any stronger updrafts
might be possible. There is some turning in the low level wind
profile as well, mainly near coastal areas. A couple brief
waterspout type tornadic structures, like seen earlier today, may
also be possible this evening.
By early Wednesday morning a line of showers and storms will be
approaching from the northwest. Similar low end chances for strong
to marginally severe storms are expected tomorrow as well. Rain
chances are high area wide through the day Wednesday as a cold
front crosses the central Gulf Coast. Elevated showers and
possibly a couple storms will likely linger behind the front
Wednesday evening with breezy conditions.
.LONG TERM...
Thursday morning through Thursday night will be a dry period behind
the front. Surface high pressure shifts east over the mid Atlantic
by Friday and onshore flow returns. Scattered showers and maybe a
couple storms are expected beginning early Friday morning as
moisture moves back in.
The big picture for this weekend is that wet weather is in store.
Looking aloft and to the west, a 500 mb trough anchored over Baja
California Friday morning will be nearly cut off. Its positions will
place the central Gulf Coast under an extended period of southwest
flow aloft. Saturday the upper trough will begin to shift east and
enhance our southwest flow. As it does showers and storms look to
become more widespread. The trough will also be sending subtle waves
through in pieces. Periods of heavier and more widespread rain will
occur as these waves move overhead, but specific timing is not
possible. With plenty of Gulf moisture rain could be locally heavy
at times from any stronger storms this weekend, through right now
about 2 inches area wide is in the forecast Saturday and Sunday.
A front may then be coming through the central Gulf Coast Monday,
but there have been inconsistencies in model runs beyond this
weekend. Overall southwest flow is expected to remain in place
aloft, therefore rain is carried in the forecast through the end
of this package.

Terminals ranging from MVFR to IFR, with the majority at IFR
ceilings at this time. Scattered SHRA and isolated TSRA continue to
move across the area, and this trend will continue overnight. Expect
that all terminals will be IFR for the majority of the night.
Conditions will be slow to improve on Wednesday, even after the
frontal passage. Unlikely to see much improvement prior to 06z

Overall onshore flow is back in place with winds from the southeast
at 10 to 15 knots. Occasional thunderstorms over the northern Gulf
have had localized gusty winds. Winds will become more southerly
Wednesday morning ahead of a cold front. The front will cross the
central Gulf Coast Wednesday afternoon turning winds to the north.
Winds behind the front will be 20 to 25 knots Wednesday night
through Thursday morning. Winds ease Thursday night and become more
easterly.
