Issued at 336 PM EST Sun Dec 31 2017 Bitterly cold air will encompass central Indiana and much of the Midwest for much of the upcoming week as an exceptionally strong high pressure expands across the eastern half of the country. Dangerously cold conditions will develop over the next few days with wind chills dropping well below zero. Dry weather is expected through much of the upcoming week. Light snow is possible Wednesday afternoon and evening as a weak upper wave passes through the area. Additional disturbances aloft may produce periodic light snow chances late week into next weekend as well. && .NEAR TERM /Tonight/... Issued at 908 PM EST Sun Dec 31 2017 Most of the earlier cloud cover has dissipated, except over the northeast zones, where residual moisture off of Lake Michigan is still producing some cloud cover. Will make some adjustments to sky condition for the rest of the night based on above. Will also lower the lows tonight a few more degrees, mainly over the northwest zones, where snow cover is deepest. Will keep headlines as is. Some of the northwest zones may flirt with warning criteria for a brief period around sunrise Monday. Previous discussion follows. Scattered stratocu continues to drift south across portions of the area on an otherwise partly cloudy afternoon. 19Z temperatures ranged from the single digits north to the teens south. After the snowpack freshening for some this morning...all focus shifts to the bitterly cold temperatures poised to end 2017 and welcome 2018. The stratocu should diminish shortly after sunset...possibly lingering in some spots into the evening before skies fully clear as the broad expansive polar high pressure builds into the region from the northwest. The wind chill advisory will commence at 00Z tonight over the southern counties to join in with the rest of the forecast area. The combination of clearing skies and the freshened snowpack will again enable temperatures to tumble fast after dark. Do not expect the boundary layer to fully decouple tonight with winds likely hanging at 5-10mph over most of the area. Wind chills are likely to drop into the -25 to -15F range over the entire forecast area and we may flirt with warning criteria in the northwest counties late. Confidence is not high enough to upgrade to a warning at this time...but will certainly monitor trends through the evening. Temps...for the reasons mentioned above...have undercut all guidance for lows overnight and in some cases by several degrees. Expect the entire forecast area to go subzero tonight with -10 and lower on the table in spots north of I-70. Likely the coldest start to a new year since the mid 1970s. The record low for Indy of -12 is likely safe...but we may give it a run. && .SHORT TERM /Monday through Wednesday/... Issued at 336 PM EST Sun Dec 31 2017 Forecast challenges focus primary on temperatures and wind chills as central Indiana and the Midwest remain firmly under the grips of an exceptionally cold airmass. The upper level pattern over the contiguous U S will change little through the short term as the upper trough remains anchored over the eastern part of the country...aided by pieces of energy aloft maintaining an amplified look. At the surface...high pressure with a strength exceeding 1050mb will track from the northern Plains to the Tennessee Valley through the period modifying as it does so. This will keep a dry...bitterly cold...polar origin airmass locked in over the region through most of the period. The only exception to the dry weather will come Wednesday as model guidance hinting at an upper wave with a frontal boundary at the surface passing through the region. While forcing aloft is generally weak...presence of any forcing along with a brief period where the DGZ depth sets up at around 150mb argues for introducing a low pop for snow in the afternoon. Suspect the recent trend of models playing catchup in the 24-48 hours ahead of these systems continues here and the potential for a light accumulating snow similar to the one earlier this morning could be in the cards. Something to watch in the coming few days. Temps...the primary story through the short term will be the cold which looks exceptionally impressive. 850mb temps below 20C through Monday will modify slowly through the end of the period. Continued recent trend of fully undercutting all guidance through the entire period...especially at night. Monday night will likely be the coldest night as lows falling to -15 to -10 are common north of I- 70. Temps will begin to recover somewhat Tuesday night and Wednesday as warm advection develops ahead of the aforementioned front before dropping again for late week as a renewed surge of bitterly cold air dives into the region. The potential to approach the coldest high on record on New Year's Day for Indy remains on the table. The record is 2 from 1928...and we are forecasting that as a high. The Wind Chill Advisory will remain in effect through Tuesday over the entire area and will likely need to be eventually extended through Tuesday night. Confidence is growing in the potential need for an upgrade to a Wind Chill Warning in northwest counties Monday through Tuesday. After collaboration with neighboring NWS offices...have elected to hold off on an upgrade at this time. That may be considered with the forecast package overnight or on Monday. && .LONG TERM /Wednesday Night through Sunday/... Issued at 215 PM EST Sun Dec 31 2017 Continued cold can be expected for much of the long term period, although not quite as severe as that expected over the short term. There is some indication in the models that the large scale trough over the eastern portion of the country will finally eject eastward and allow upper level flow to become more zonal late in the period, which would allow temperatures to moderate somewhat. Unfortunately, this may be temporary and come with a low pressure system producing precipitation, perhaps in the form of light snow, followed by another Arctic high beyond the end of the long term. Made minor downward adjustments to blends at times, but overall the initialization performed decently. Some question as to potential for a few light snow showers early in the long term as sharply cyclonic flow in place across the area and a few waves skirt the region moving through the overall flow Wednesday night into Thursday. Will keep out for now and monitor, as there is some indication that between these waves and a long lake enhanced fetch, some snow showers may get into the area during that time frame. && .AVIATION /Discussion for the 010800Z IND Taf update/... VFR Conditions continue. No significant changes to the ongoing TAF. GOES16 continues to show clear skies across Central Indiana and surface analysis shows strong arctic high pressure over Missouri and Nebraska building across the region.
