.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will advance northward into New England tonight as
low pressure moves into the Great Lakes. The warm front will
move north across Maine and New Hampshire Wednesday. As the low
pressure system moves into the Saint Lawrence Valley, a trailing
cold front will cross the area from the west. Above normal
temperatures on Wednesday will be followed by much colder
conditions through the remainder of the week and weekend with
another chance of precipitation for Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
100 AM update... quick update to add slight chance for thunder
over the western half of the area. Upstream activity over NY/PA
has had occasional lightning and HRRR model profiles show some
modest elevated instability developing before daybreak so will
account for thunder chances in the already complicated weather
grids.

1030 PM Update...Have removed Androscoggin and Kennebec
Counties from the winter weather advisory. While there may be
some pockets of icing later tonight, roads are expected to
remain wet. Otherwise, the rest of the advisory area remains. At
this time, we are in a lull in terms of steady precipitation
but that is expected to fill back in after midnight as the next
impulse approaches.

835 pm Update: Radar shows back edge of main precipitation
shield moving offshore with a developing surface wave to the
southeast. A dry slot currently moving into southwest NH well
ahead of the approaching cold front to the west. Ingested model
data which handled needed adjustments nicely and to lower POPs
over southern NH and then into southwest Maine later. PTYPE over
interior Maine and the northern half of NH still primarily in
the form of light snow while places to the south are rain.
Although dry slot moves through tonight, there will still be
some light precipitation with the weak WAA so central and
northern area may have a light mix and even some icing possible.
POWT technique picks this up nicely.

710 pm Update: Input latest mesonet data. Made some adjustments
to temps and raised POPs for southern areas this evening.
Reworked the weather grids off of POWT tool which gave more
representative areas of snow and a mix this evening and then
more ice later tonight in some areas in the advisory areas.

Previous Discussion:
Somewhat tricky p-type forecast through tonight as initial shot
of precip will be almost completely dependent on boundary layer
warmth and dryness. However, the trend is a little warm at
precip onset, and tonight, and overall QPF intensity is a little
lighter which would favor less snow from the foothills
southward to the coast. Therefore have dropped the WSW for
interior SW ME and Belknap county in NH, where FZRA is unlikely
and snow amounts should less than inch, if that much. Some
precip is moving thru srn areas attm, and this mostly due to
some WAA from 700 mb up. The more persistent precip will move
into the CWA around 22-02Z. Could see some now mix with thru
rain anywhere in the CWA for an hour or two but for the most
part the srn half of NH and coastal ME will see no accums. an
inch or two is possible in the foothills as there will likely be
a period of snow this evening before a change to rain, and 2-4"
will be a expected in the north, with perhaps up to 5" N of
Rangeley and Jackman, and on the higher terrain. TEmps will drop
once the precip and that is when will we see lows, ranging from
near 30 in the NE to the mid upper 30s in the south. Temps
should begin to start rising in the S during the pre-dawn hours.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
The sfc low will be be near the adirondacks Wed morning, and
secondary weak low may develop over the nrn CWA during the
morning, which will keep SHRA or rain /or SN in far NE zones/
across most of the CWA thru the day. The exception will be srn
NH and interior SW ME, where the warm sector will move thru
aloft, and could see some breaks of sun and temps in the upper
50s to low 60s. The cold front shifts through in the afternoon
and another round of more significant showers are expected
through mid-late afternoon. The front should clear the CWA by
00Z. Winds will pick up right behind the front, in strong CAA
advection. Still seeing decent isallobaric couplet as well,
although it is over a greater distance than you'd like to see
for very strong winds. HAve opted for an advisory mainly for
several hours of strong gusts behind the front from late in the
day Wed and thru the overnight hours. Gusts to 50 mph or so will
be possible, especially over the hilltops and higher terrain.
The far ern zones were left out of the advisory because sfc
occlusion will still be tracking through the area Wed evening,
and this will not allow the mixing to take advantage of the best
winds aloft. TEmps will fall quickly behind the front with lows
dropping to around 20 in the mtns and around 30 in the south.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pres builds across the region Thu with strong CAA and dry
air on downsloping gusty northwest winds. Thu night the center
of high pres crests over the region. Fri another fast moving
upper short with an associated WAA pattern spreads clouds then
snow in the mountains and mixed PTYPE elsewhere. Temps aloft
will support snow across the area but low level boundary layer
temps may be too warm thus the mix or rain over southern areas. The
system quickly exits Fri night with clearing and return to a
northwest flow and colder air. Over the weekend temps aloft will
be cold but surface max temps will still be able to reach into
the 30s in the mountains and 40s elsewhere while overnight lows
drop into the teens and 20s. A much deeper upper trof approaches
early next week with more significant qpf and another dose of
winter like conditions.

.AVIATION /05Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term...IFR or lower expected overnight into Wed morning,
with some improvement to MVFR possible Wed afternoon away from
the coast. KHIE may fluctuate between MVFR and VFR overnight as
strong SE downslope sets up, but will likely drop to IFR on Wed
as flow shifts more SW. Should see VFR everywhere Wed night, but
look for strong W-NW wind gusts to around 40 KT at times behind
a cold front Wed night.

Long Term...
VFR Thu. Conditions becoming IFR Fri and then returning to VFR
Sat and Sun.

Short Term...Have converted the gale watch to a warning for Wed
afternoon thru Wed night. Strongest gusts of 40-45 KT will like
be for a few few hours behind the frontal passage for several
hours Wed evening. Gales will likely subside to SCA during the

Long Term...
SCA conditions due to northwest gusty winds for Thursday will
become light Thu night. Friday an increasing return southerly
flow will allow SCA conditions to redevelop. A cold front passes
Fri night with gusty northwest winds with SCA conditions
expected.
