The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Wind Advisory, which is in effect until noon EST today. This
replaces the High Wind Warning. 

* LOCATIONS...The northern mountains of North Carolina.

* HAZARDS...Strong winds from the north.

* TIMING...Winds are expected to become strong and gusty again for
  a few hours after sunrise. 

* WINDS...North to northwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 40 to
  50 mph possible.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree 
  limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that winds will be strong enough to make
driving difficult...especially for high profile vehicles. Use

Though some gusty winds will continue through this afternoon, both
sustained winds and gusts have dropped to below advisory levels,
and significant impacts from gusty winds are not expected. Winds
will continue to decrease through this evening.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to build into the region from the
Mississippi Valley through the weekend, as strong low pressure moves
away from the East Coast. The next cold front arrives on Tuesday
bringing cooler weather for the middle of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 1240 am Saturday: Pressure gradient continues to slowly relax
across the area, except within the downslope region along/near the
Blue Ridge. As such, the wind scenario is increasingly becoming more
of a Blue Ridge/downslope/mountain wave show (especially within the
strongest gradient/H8 winds north of I-40).  We are opting to drop
the High Wind Warning for all areas but the northern mtns, while
canceling headlines altogether for Madison/Haywood and the lower
elevations of Rutherford/Polk. The HWW will be replaced with a Wind
Advisory for all other zones.

Otherwise, the near term will be clear and cool with max temps near
seasonal averages. This morning's lows will be near to just below
seasonal norms, with much of the area outside of the mountains
dropping close to freezing and the mountains well below. Very
similar conditions will persist through tomorrow.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 110 PM EST Friday: The broad central CONUS ridge in place on
Saturday night will migrate to the East Coast Sunday through Monday.
Meanwhile, surface high pressure centered over eastern Canada will
remains draped down over the eastern U.S. through at least Sunday
night, with very dry profiles and in place. Anticipate slightly
below normal mins and slightly above normal max temps on Sunday.

Mid and upper level moisture ahead of the next approaching frontal
system will likely arrive from the west Monday afternoon, but any
lower level moisture in the southwesterly return flow will be
delayed until late day across the NC mountains. The diurnal range
will be a bit smaller on Monday than on Sunday given the increasing
clouds. Any late day PoPs will be confined to scattered showers in
the southwest mountains.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 2pm EST Friday:  GFS and EC models are in pretty good
agreement with the timing of the approach of the next system Monday
night, with the GFS perhaps a few hours ahead of the EC.  Per GFS BL
streamlines, front reaches western parts of the CWA around 12Z on
Tuesday, exiting Tuesday evening, with precipitation from the FROPA
crossing the region from west to east from late Monday night through
Tuesday.  Rapid passage of front, and limited moisture return will
keep event total rainfall at a quarter to a half inch.  Plume of
moisture from the GOM drawn up ahead of the front will increase
dewpoints from the upper 20s on Monday, to the low 40s by FROPA
time, which should still be low enough to preclude any significant
convective activity; though BUFKIT soundings manage a smidgen of
elevated cape Tuesday evening.  Post frontally, lower and upper
winds become northwesterly, and some light snow is expected at the
highest elevations of the Southern Appalachians. Latest models
have little more than a dusting at this time, though. 850mb
winds are currently forecast at around 40kts southwesterly ahead
of the front, and 20 kts northwesterly behind the front.

Warm advection ahead of front will keep the lows Tuesday morning
elevated at 5 to 10 degrees above normal, but CAA behind front will
drop temps to normal levels on Wednesday, and below normal Friday.
Piedmont temps look to fall down to near freezing Thursday and
Friday morning, which is about 5 degrees below seasonal normal.

Tuesday's FROPA provides the main chance for precipitation, with low
POPs and clear skies Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the next
system approaching the area late on Saturday.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Dry air will result in VFR/SKC conditions
through the period. Otherwise, Piedmont/foothills winds will
generally remain in the 5-10 kts range until after sunrise (an
exception being at KGMU, where gap winds are causing gustiness which
may continue off and on through the morning) while winds will
continue to gust to around 30 kts at KAVL through at least much of
the next 18 hours. NW winds increase at the Piedmont/foothills sites
by mid-morning, with gusts to around 20 kts possible. Winds begin to
diminish at all sites Sat evening.

Outlook: Dry/VFR conditions will persist through the weekend and
into early next week before chances for precip and restrictions
increase Monday night and Tuesday.
