.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday)

Today...
We will squeak out one last pretty nice day with highs 10 to 15
degrees above normal giving everyone a chance to perhaps finish up
a few outdoor chores before winter sets in with a vengeance
tonight. The wind will be light with highs in the lower 50s
over southern Nebraska to upper 50s across northern Kansas. Clouds
will be on the increase today ahead of our strengthening storm
system.

Tonight into Sunday...
A strong storm system will track out of the Rocky Mountains and
into the plains.

Storm System Timing...
9 PM - 3 AM: Precipitation may begin as rain but will transition
into snow during this time frame from northwest to southeast
across the forecast area. Some of the snow could be heavy after
midnight especially from the Tri-Cities and points to the north
and west.

3 AM - 9 AM: The brunt of the winter storm will hit our forecast
area. This is when the snowfall rates will be the heaviest, the
visibility the poorest (some rural areas could see periods of near
zero visibility), and the north wind will be the strongest (25-30
gusting 35-40 mph). Travel is not recommended!

9 AM - Noon: Snow will likely come to an end from northwest to
southeast across the forecast area. This is a quick moving storm
system. The wind will still be gusty with blowing snow, but the
visibility will be improving once the falling snow has ended.

Noon - 6 PM: The north wind will still be around 20-25 gusting
30-35 mph during the early afternoon hours, but by late afternoon
and near 6 pm the wind should be down to 15-20 mph gusting 25 mph.
Blowing snow will gradually decrease through the afternoon. Travel
could still be slow, but should at least be moving in most areas.

Uncertainty...
Forecast models are in good agreement that most of our forecast
area should see at least 2-4 inches of snow. However, the 06Z GFS
and 00Z GFS-FV3 have come in stronger with the system and would
result in more snow and poorer conditions than we are currently
forecasting. Most of the other models continue to support our
forecast of a broad brush 2-4 inches of snow. If the aggressive
06Z GFS model is correct some areas could see over 6 inches of
snow. We will need to keep an eye on model trends as this storm
system approaches.

Main Concern...
My biggest concern centers around a brief window of around 3 to 6
hours during the heaviest snow when we could briefly see near
blizzard conditions in rural areas given the strong winds along
with moderate to heavy falling snow. Thankfully, the worst of
these conditions will already be ongoing when people get up so
they won't happen into it unaware and should already be improving
after 9 am in most areas.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through Friday)

Sunday night...The wind will become light at less than 10 mph and
skies should be mostly clear allowing for a cold night with the
fresh snow cover over.

Monday through Friday...
We will be in a much cooler pattern with below normal temperatures
this week. The northeastern half of the forecast area will likely
see highs only in the 30s most if not every day this week while
southwest zones should see highs in the lower 40s. We will see a
weak fast moving storm system or two track across the area
Wednesday or Thursday, but these do not appear to carry much
moisture with them. However, several forecast models are hinting
at the possibility of another bigger storm system for the plains
by Friday into next weekend, but there is a lot of uncertainty
that far out and most of this possible system would impact the
plains just beyond the end of our current 7 day forecast. However,
it is worth keeping an eye on in coming days.

Big winter storm on the way. Biggest concerns will be strong north
wind combined with snow overnight tonight and into Sunday morning.
There very well could be a few hours withing the 08Z to 14Z time
range when we get blizzard conditions with visibility less than
1/4SM for a few hours, but it would be hard to pin down exact
times at this point.
