.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Current surface analysis shows a trough of low pressure in central
SD at this time. This trough will move pretty close to the I 29
corridor today before it more or less fizzles out with a lack of
upper air push. Because of the trough, winds will be light today.
Aloft, mid level disturbance is still forecast to move across
Nebraska and the very southern reaches of South Dakota today and
early this evening. Moisture depth increases some in our far
southern zones through the day, warranting a chance for light
rainfall around Sioux City and Storm Lake this afternoon. When the
wave exits early this evening, the rain may turn to a very light
sleet around Storm Lake but its doubtful anything will actually
measure at that point. Highs today will be above freezing which
should help to melt some ice this afternoon from yesterdays mixed
precip event. For lows tonight, trended toward the cooler guidance
readings which places many lows in the lower 20s. This is because
cloud cover may not be real thick yet at this point tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

On Friday,the large scale trends are close in progging the upper and
surface lows eastward across the southern Rockies. However by 00Z
Saturday, the main portion of the upper trough and surface low is
located over the TX panhandle, with the NAM and GFS a bit further
north over western KS and the OK panhandle. So far this placement
difference does not appear to have a large impact for the forecast
Friday night as the upper low elongates as it closes off and extends
from western NE to eastern KS by 12Z Saturday. The surface low on
the various model is continued to be shown near Kansas City with a
strength near 988mb. The warm conveyor belt begins Friday night and
is massive, extending from the Gulf Coast states northward through
the Ohio Valley, then extending back westward into Iowa, Nebraska
and many of our zones.

The trouble Friday night is precip type as a stubborn warm layer
aloft exists backing into the CWA from the east, along a developing
trowal maximized in the 305-315K layer. Many of our zones except for
perhaps our far northeast corner become deeply saturated, enough to
produce ice in the cloud layer, but the warm temperatures aloft are
melting some of the snowfall creating a mess. Therefore an icing
potential is still there, especially across northwest IA and
immediate adjacent locations as cold air aloft does begin to develop
first in our western zones as Friday night progresses. But the warm
air bubble hangs on tough in our southeast quarter. Lows Friday
night will be just below freezing, held up by clouds and increasing
winds. In fact, blended mos values into the superblend winds
Saturday and Saturday night to increase speeds into the 20 to 35 mph
range.

Some subtle differences in the models then emerge beginning on
Saturday, as the ECMWF continues to show the upper low a bit more
closed off and stronger when compared to the NAM and GFS. That said,
the center of the low placement over southwest IA is pretty close
between the various models. The surface low follows suit and is
basically in two centers extending from southwest IA to central IL
as it begins to occlude. The warm layer aloft remains stubborn in
northwest IA Saturday morning producing a wintry mix, perhaps
even mixed with rain early in the day in our far southeast corner
around Storm Lake and adjacent locations. The warm conveyor belt
is still arching back into our CWA with trowaling continuing along
the belt. But as the features pull a bit eastward beginning
midday Saturday, it appears temperatures cool enough aloft to
change all of the precip over to snow in northwest IA. Highs on
Saturday will not move a lot off of lows, on average about 4
degrees and one wonders if even this is too much of a diurnal
swing as temperatures should be falling in the afternoon hours.

The system begins to weaken Saturday night as it pulls eastward both
at the surface and aloft. Snow will continue across the forecast
area with windy conditions and cold air advection. Interestingly on
Sunday, it appears a weak upper low develops right over Nebraska,
more or less a weakness in the height field between the departing
upper low which is now over the eastern Great Lakes, and another
upper low developing across the four corners area. Therefore light
snow chances still exist close to the Nebraska border and into
northwest IA right into Sunday afternoon. Then finally as Sunday
night progresses, the upper ridge north of the upper low begins to
shift southward drying the weather out across the entire forecast
area. Obviously if skies clear out Sunday night or early next week,
temperatures at night could really plummet with Canadian high
pressure taking over.

All told, new snow total accumulations range from 3 to 4 inches in
east central SD from Huron to Brookings, to 6 to 11 inches along and
south of the I 90 corridor, and into much of southwest MN by using a
blend of the ECMWF and GFS which QPF wise are not too far apart at
this point. The heaviest snow amounts close to 10 or 11 inches are
in our far southwest zones in Gregory and southern Charles Mix
counties as there are many models pointing to the most snow in that
area as their temperatures are the coldest aloft and colder much
sooner than other areas.

Snow amounts in far southeast zones from Sioux City to Storm Lake
are a bit tricky due to the mixed precip potential late Friday night
and Saturday morning in those locations. At any rate, extended the
watch a couple of rows of counties northward to account for some
uncertainty on exactly where the warm conveyor belt sets up exactly.
Interestingly the new FV3 model shows much more snowfall potential
for northwest IA as it cools off the aforementioned warm bubble
aloft much sooner, thus transitioning the precip to all snow in our
southeast zones sooner. If the warm layer aloft wet bulbs downward
due to a high precip rate, this scenario is plausible so we will
certainly keep an eye on this.

Quite the opposite from last year at this time, if you are looking
for a warm up next week it is not going to happen. A reinforcing
shot of cool air comes down in the middle of next week from the
north and northwest which will keep temperatures down to well below
normal readings.

Messy aviation period over the next 24 hours (and will likely
continue into the weekend with an incoming winter storm). A wide
variety of ceilings and visibilities across the region with patchy
dense fog noted across our northern and western counties and areas
of IFR ceilings elsewhere. Largely would expect MVFR to VFR
conditions at the terminals this afternoon, but wouldn't be
surprised to see brief periods of additional restrictions. By late
this evening expect fog/low stratus to expand across much of the
region and thus included IFR conditions in all three TAFS for the
overnight and early Friday morning hours.
