Southwest winds have returned, and will increase in speeds through Saturday night. A passing cold front will bring chances for rain and snow Saturday night into Sunday. A drying and warming trend is forecast from Monday through Thursday. && .UPDATE...Clear skies this morning will persist all day with afternoon temperatures a few degrees above normal. However, breezy southwest winds in the 15-20 mph range with gusts 25-35 mph will make it feel chilly in the high country. Sent minor forecast updates to increase wind speeds for today, otherwise no changes needed this morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION /355 AM MST/...Skies are clear across northern Arizona this morning. Southwest flow aloft has returned due to the large low pressure system riding down the West coast. Progs are in good agreement showing this trough taking an eastward track across the Great Basin this weekend, and pushing a cold front across our area Saturday night. Fair weather is expected through tonight, though breezy south to southwest winds to develop by mid morning. For Saturday and Saturday night, southwest wind speeds to increase steadily as the cold front nears. Wind speeds below 600 mb Saturday night are around 5 knots slower than those we had for the recent Presidents Day wind event. Confidence is increasing that wind advisories will be needed for the downslope wind areas including the House Rock Valley, Doney Park, Springerville for Saturday night, and possibly a larger area for late Saturday afternoon. Will defer to later shifts the advisory issuance decision as they will have higher resolution wind progs. Moisture depth with the front thins from north to south, and qpf forecasts remain light. Current forecasts have 1-2 inches fo snow on the Kaibab Plateau Saturday night and less an inch along the Mogollon Rim west of Happy Jack. The eastern Mogollon rim and White mountains should see a few flurries at best. Clearing to move in from west to east on Sunday, with breezy W-NW winds behind the front. Max temps Sunday should be the coolest of the next 7 days. Monday through Thursday, building west coast ridging will lead to a drying/warming trend over northern Arizona next week. High temperatures could be around ten degrees above normal by Thursday. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z package... VFR conditions for the next 24 hours. Southwest winds at 15 to 25 kts with gusts to 30 kts will develop after 18z. Winds will decrease to 10 to 12 kts overnight after 03z.
