Raised high temperatures for today a degree or two, otherwise that
is looking fine. Cloud cover and cool southeast winds will keep
the temperature rise much less than yesterday. Latest high
resolution model guidance keeps most of the afternoon dry, but
possibly some light rain developing along and west of the Red
River Valley by later afternoon.

Winter Storm is getting close, but that doesnt mean there aren't
a lot of questions. Interesting to see the 00z-06z meso models,
such as HRRR, WRF depict a much slower precipitation evolution
today with rain chances spreading northeast mainly mid to late
aftn then increasing in coverage this evening mainly NE ND and
parts of NW MN. Thunder chances do look a tad less in the far
south and coord with ABR removed mention. Net result today was for
less precipitation til mid aftn and after. Temperatures as
expected staying above 32F across the fcst area at 09z and will
rise 3-5 degrees today with a steady ESE wind that will increase
thru the aftn/eve.
Tonight is where the main questions come into play. The HRRR/WRF
have quite a dry punch coming into central ND with precipitation
chances highest in the RRV. Temperatures with the ESE wind will
hold above 32F thru the evening. After midnight cooling does occur
from the east and the far eastern fcst area should drop just below
freezing...and also the far north along Canadian border. 850 mb
temps start dropping too, esp in the north. Feel overall best bet
for any icing will be more in the Bemidji-Wadena areas if temps
cool as expected. That area has 0.10 inch ice overnight.
Transition to snow overnight in DVL basin....but as usual timing
and with dry punch into the area from the southwest precip
amounts.

Main sfc low wraps up in eastern SD in the Watertown/Brookings
area and moves slowly east thru Monday evening. Best moisture feed
and precipitation rates should be Monday daytime into Monday
evening before drier air starts to work southwestward by late
Monday night. Snow amounts Monday and Monday night so dependent on
QPF with total storm snowfall dependent on temps late tonight and
early Monday. Storm total snowfall grids show 6-8 inches potential
all of eastern ND with 4-6 into WC MN and a tad less Baudette. Due
to questions and lack of confidence in snowfall totals will
maintain watch all areas. Will add far SE ND and into WC MN into
the watch...all but Grant (coord with MPX) as snowfall totals and
ice in Ottertail and Wadena counties are near 6 as well as higher
totals in Richland and Sargent.
Chances for snow will linger into early Tuesday as the previous
system propagates from the Central Plains into the Ohio Valley.
Expect conditions to improve considerably Tuesday with winds turning
north and weakening as high pressure moves into the Dakotas.
Following the early week system, no significant impacts are expected
for the rest of the week, so see no need to stray from a model blend
forecast. Cooler, near average temperatures expected for Tuesday
through at least Friday with highs generally in the 20s to around
freezing and lows in the single digits to teens. On Wednesday
through Friday, the closed low is expected to meander from the Great
Lakes to the Atlantic seaboard. An upper ridge building in the West
will lend to northwest flow aloft for the Northern Plains and favors
drier, quiet weather for the Dakotas. There is a small signal for
weak upper energy to sneak through and bring isolated light snow or
flurries during this timeframe, but again, any impacts would be
minimal to none with such weak forcing and relatively dry air
present.

Lots of uncertainty yet in regard to the TAFs. Guidance yesterday
had shown IFR ceilings region wide by 12z this morning, which did
not happen. Thinking the ceilings will lower into MVFR ranges this
afternoon, with some shower development possible by late afternoon
into the evening. Temperatures still look quite mild tonight, so
timing any sort of switchover to freezing pcpn or snow is tough.
Until temperatures drop and there is some falling snow, BLSN will
not be an issue.
