.SYNOPSIS...Heavy rain and strong winds will impact the region
today and again Friday. Drier weather is expected during the
weekend, with wet and windy weather redeveloping during the early
to middle portions of next week.

.DISCUSSION...Happy Thanksgiving! For those that have outdoor festivities
planned you will have the early morning hours with fairly dry but
windy conditions. Heavy rains will redevelop across the region
late this morning into the early afternoon across the northern
portion of the area and then slowly slide down the coast through
the afternoon. Extremely gusty southerly winds will also develop
later this morning ahead of the front for coastal locations north
of Cape Mendocino. A strong pressure gradient combined with a LLJ
in excess of 50 kts suggests very strong winds above 45 mph will
be possible for exposed coastal headlands and elevated ridges and
mountains. These strong winds will bring some tree limbs down and
cause sporadic power outages. For the latest details please
reference the wind advisory that has been issued.
By this evening rain across the northern half of the area will be shunted
to the south leading to mostly dry conditions with only widely
scattered showers. Winds will also decrease late this afternoon
into the evening as the system moves through. Early Friday morning
a secondary surface low develops and moves towards the coast just
to the north of our area. This system is expected to bring even
heavier rains as moisture flux vectors are pointed into our
coast. The largest IVT (Integrated Vapor Transport) values will be
located from Cape Mendocino northward with values approaching 700
Kg/m/s. This means that area wide heavy rain will be possible
especially for locations that see topographical enhancements
Friday morning through Friday afternoon. This time frame will see
the greatest potential for localized urban and small creek
flooding. This second round of rain will also be accompanied by
strong southerly winds slightly weaker than the winds seen
Thursday.
Looking into the weekend, ridging will redevelop across the West
Coast which will dampen our rain chances this weekend. Model
guidance indicates a weak system attempting to move across the
area Sunday however only a few showers may be possible across the
far northern portions of the area. A stronger weather system will
impact the North Coast early next week which will bring another
round of rain and winds to the area. /WCI

.AVIATION...A frontal system will bring bouts of strong winds
and possible low level wind shear to the terminals today. Even
though conditions have improved early this morning, the new wave of
rain today and tonight will likely result in reduced vsbys in heavy
showers and periods of MVFR cigs.
&&
.MARINE...South winds will quickly accelerate out of the south
again this morning. Maximum winds will be in the northern waters,
between 30 and 40 kt with gusts to 45 kt. These winds should quickly
weaken in the northern waters by Thursday evening. Winds will likely
ramp up again tonight, with a few gale gusts possible by early Fri.
Beyond Fri, winds look to stay below 15kt through the weekend.
Confused seas dominate for the next few days. A short to mid period
WNW swell will continue to fill in today through Fri. This will be
joined by a locally driven short period SW wind seas today, which
peaks this afternoon. Combined seas should build to 12 to 14 ft in
the northern outer waters today. Seas should begin to weaken by
Saturday morning as the shorter period wind waves filter out with
the dying south winds, leaving the remnants of a mid period WNW
swell to reign through the weekend.

.HYDROLOGY...The next round of heavy rainfall will develop
late this morning into the early afternoon and persist through
Friday. This round of precipitation will push storm total
rainfall amounts to 3 to 5 inches for most of the region, with
locally higher amounts in excess of 8 inches occurring across
west facing mountain and ridge slopes. Rapid rises on area rivers
will be possible, but river flooding is not expected. However,
heavy rainfall may cause small streams and low-lying urban areas
to flood.

.COASTAL FLOODING...Current tidal anomalies in the vicinity of
Humboldt Bay are around 0.9 feet. Applying that anomaly to the
astronomical tide this Friday of 7.9 feet, combined with strong
southwest winds and surrounding run-off due to heavy rainfall,
minor flooding around Humboldt Bay will be possible, including
King Salmon and Jackson Ranch Road.
