AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 307 PM PDT Sun Sep 16 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Crisp clear weather will continue inland, but low clouds and areas of fog should return to the coast by Monday morning. Temperatures inland will warm up closer to mid September normals for the middle of the week. Another weak front may bring a sprinkle to areas near the Oregon border next Friday. && .DISCUSSION...It's a very pleasant mid-September afternoon across the vast majority of northwest California. The tail-end of a dying cold front brought some clouds to Del Norte County this morning, but even these have largely retreated back to the north and west. After a frosty start in a few sheltered interior valleys, temps this afternoon have been running several degrees warmer across our area on average, compared to yesterday. Even at the coast, before the onshore breeze kicked in, some locations quickly rose to near 70 degrees this morning. Any shower activity with the front largely stayed offshore, but a few sprinkles were found around the Crescent City vicinity earlier this morning. The upcoming week largely looks dry, though another similar front may arrive Thursday night or Friday. Tonight inland spots will have to be monitored once again for some localized frost, but it should be restricted to the same spots that have seen it the past morning or two, such as Ruth and Hayfork. Have patchy frost in the grids, but opted to hold off on a frost advisory given this afternoon temps running warmer and the very localized nature of any temps below 36. Stratus development should be more of a concern tonight as high pressure offshore begins to build in, with increasing onshore flow. So far without much in the way of stratus development, am not too confident how it will play out. Think at least most of this evening will be clear before low clouds and fog develop overnight. Expect most of the coast will end up cloudy through at least mid to late morning on Monday, but afternoon sun still seems like a reasonable expectation. Places around Shelter Cove, downwind of Cape Mendocino, may stay clear for the next few nights/mornings with increasing northerly flow. Breezy conditions will be found along portions of the coast during the afternoon hours the next few days as the northerlies pick up over the coastal waters. The winds inland may tend more offshore at night and into the morning, especially over Del Norte County, heading into Tuesday and Wednesday, which may help keep Crescent City clearer. Building high pressure aloft, or more like retreating low pressure troughing, will aid in a warming trend for inland areas Tuesday though Thursday, before the next dying front brings somewhat cooler temperatures back in for Friday and next weekend. /AAD && .AVIATION...Not a ton of confidence for timing of the return of stratus tonight, but fairly confident that it will develop. Given how clear it is now to start, thinking it may take until after 06z or so before we start to see ceilings come into CEC or ACV. IFR or even LIFR conditions seem like a good bet for Monday morning. Not expecting too much fog or low visibility, but would not rule periods of that out with light winds becoming NW toward midday. UKI will remain clear and VFR with light winds as well. && .MARINE...Generally light southerly winds ahead of an approaching frontal trough will switch to Northwest this evening. Winds will veer more northerly by early Monday and increase, with advisory level speeds forecast by Monday night. At this time, it appears there may be a brief period of gale force gusts over the outer waters Tuesday night and early Wednesday. A S swell at around 18 seconds will continue through the middle of the coming week, with periods decreasing to around 15 seconds by that time.
