AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 233 PM PDT Tue Apr 3 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather continues today, although clouds will increase this afternoon and tonight. A shower or two is possible on Wednesday. More significant rains develops on Thursday. Periods of rain will continue through Saturday before it tapers off on Sunday. && .DISCUSSION...High pressure has started to weaken over the region this afternoon and the upper level flow is becoming more zonal. High clouds have started to increase in the north and will continue to spread south across the area tonight. Late tonight and Wednesday some light rain is possible in the higher terrain of Del Norte and Trinity counties, but amounts should be fairly light. Mid-level cloud cover will be extensive in most areas, although Mendocino county may see a few less clouds. This should keep temperatures warm enough in most areas to avoid any frost, however some of the coldest valleys of Mendocino could be close. This will need to be monitored as it gets closer. Thursday afternoon through Friday several shortwaves moving through the very moist WSW flow. The GFS shows this area to have nearly 2 inches of precipitable water with it. This will bring periods of moderate to heavy rain to the area. Friday afternoon there may be a short break on the Humboldt coast, but elsewhere will continue to see rain. Rainfall amounts from this initial system are expected to be around 1 to 2 inches with local amounts up to 3 inches. The highest amounts are expected in the higher terrain of northern Mendocino county and southern Humboldt county. Friday night into Saturday the main frontal boundary finally pushes through the area. This is where the model discrepancies start to increase. The 12Z ECMWF moves the front through slower than the 12Z GFS and allows more rain to fall. The 12Z Canadian is also slower. Generally went with this slower solution, but this will need to be monitored as it gets closer. Winds are expected to be the strongest with this main front Friday night. Gusts to 50 mph are possible over the highest ridges of Humboldt and Del norte county with lower winds elsewhere. Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches again with local amounts up to 3 inches. With this system the highest amounts are expected to be in Del Norte county. Small stream flooding is still possible, although it may be less widespread than previously thought. Rapid river rises are still expected on the main stem rivers although no flooding is expected. Snow levels will start to fall on Saturday dropping to around 4,000 feet Saturday night. Sunday showers will diminish through the day, again the ECMWF is a bit slower on ending the rain. A brief period of high pressure is expected to bring dry weather on Monday. Monday night into Tuesday another period of rain is expected. MKK && .AVIATION...A ridge of high pressure remained dominant today...and will continue so through the afternoon 24 hour TAF package (Wednesday afternoon). Thus, sky conditions will remain generally VFR. This morning however, patchy stratus developed along the coast briefly, dropping ACV into IFR status. Nevertheless, through the period an influx of upper level clouds will stream across the ridge, bringing high and upper mid Cigs to the ACV and CEC air terminals. Therefore, the establishment of any marine stratus in the morning will be greatly hampered and/or limited. /TA && .MARINE...A stretch of calmer conditions is forecast to last through Wednesday with seas subsiding to 3 to 5 ft while gentle northerly winds become light and variable. An approaching storm system will eventually increase and shift winds back to the south Wednesday evening into Thursday with near gale force gusts being possible for the northern outer waters. Steep seas will build in response to these winds and will also be accompanied by a longer period 12 to 16 ft wave group.
