AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 244 PM PDT Tue Mar 20 2018 .SYNOPSIS...An Pacific storm will bring periods of light to moderate rain to Northwest California through Thursday. Cooler air with moderate to heavy snow down to 2000 ft is expected Thursday night through Saturday. && .DISCUSSION...Clouds and a few sprinkles are present over NW CA at this time as a warm front slowly moves across the region. This will continue most of the night before another rain producing cold front moves in on Wednesday. The cold front will produce moderate rain along with some gusty winds along the coastal hills but sea level winds should will not be especially strong. The cold front will move across the region Wednesday night into the early morning hours of Thursday. Snow levels will remain fairly high during this time period and do not anticipate any winter weather concerns through Wednesday night. A brief break in the precipitation will occur Thursday afternoon/evening while snow levels fall dramatically into Friday morning. This will usher in a 24-36 hour window of winter weather to elevations above 2000 ft beginning late Thursday night. The period from late Thursday evening through Friday evening may require a Winter Storm Warning as abundant snow fall is expected above 2000 ft mainly impacting local highway passes along 299 and 36 and perhaps 199. Shallow instability and showers will linger on the backside of the trough on Saturday and Sunday, thus added a slight chance of thunderstorms and small hail to the near coast region on Saturday. Upper ridging/warming aloft and offshore wind flow should result in drier conditions Sun Night and Monday. The models indicate a warm front moving over the ridge on Monday and Tuesday, however the southern extent of the rain is most likely overdone so have kept the forecast dry during that period. && .AVIATION...An offshore low pressure system continued to advect a plethora of clouds across Northwest California. At noonday, Cigs were mostly hovering in the (lower) middle cloud levels (6500-10000 FT) but occasionally a little lower. A somewhat ill- defined warm front, associated with the Low, brought some feeble amounts of rain as far north as ACV today. Winds also remained generally light, although brief gustiness occurred at EKA & FOT as the warm front moved over then weakened. Through the 00z TAF 24 hour period, rain will become more widespread on Wednesday as will increasing southerly winds, and lowering clouds/visibilities. /TA && .MARINE...Southeasterly winds will increase through Wednesday as an approaching storm system tightens the pressure gradient across the coastal waters. A small craft advisory was issued for the southern outer waters primarily for wind gusts near 25 kt through tonight. A stronger round of winds will impact the waters Wednesday night through early Thursday morning as a front passes overhead. The wind forecast has been problematic the past few days, which has lowered confidence, but near gale gusts will be possible early Thursday followed by a period of westerlies. We will need to consider small craft advisories across the waters, at most a short lived gale, as conditions deteriorate.
