AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 254 PM PST Fri Feb 16 2018 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring one last day of dry and mild weather across northwest California. Then another storm system will bring a chance for rain and mountain snow late this weekend with a prolonged period of colder temperatures through early next week. && .DISCUSSION...Skies are mainly clear this afternoon ahead of the approaching cold front. Some stratus has started to form on the Humboldt coast and this is expected expand this evening and tonight. A fairly dry cold front will bring some rain to the area on Saturday. This will start midday in Crescent City and spread south to Cape Mendocino by late afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be less than a quarter of inch in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Overnight this rain will continue to spread south and east. Trinity and Mendocino counties will see only a trace to a few hundredths of an inch of rain with this. Snow levels will be around 6,000 feet with this initial band of precip. Late Saturday night into Sunday snow levels will fall as the upper level trough moves over the area. Sunday afternoon snow levels are expected to drop to around 1,500 feet in the north and 2,000 feet in the south. Sunday night into Monday morning these will continue to drop to around 500 to 800 feet in the north, although snow will be fairly light at this point. There is also the potential for small hail on Sunday. 500 mb temps are dropping to around -34C but instability is limited and lapse rates are only around 7C/KM. There are still some disagreements on the exact location of the trough. The GFS has the trough slightly farther east and QPF amounts are a bit lower. The NAM and the ECMWF are slightly colder with the trough farther west and have slightly higher QPF amounts. A winter weather advisory may be needed in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Monday high pressure starts to build into the area, although there will be some lingering showers around through the day. Monday night into Tuesday with a very cold airmass overhead. Temperatures at the coast may fall into the upper 20s and a hard freeze warning may be needed. Farther inland temperatures will drop well into the 20s in most areas and the teens in some of the colder spots that remain clear. Wednesday morning will be slightly warmer in most areas as high pressure builds overhead. Late in the week there is the potential for additional rain and snow. Snow levels as low as 1,000 to 3,000 feet are possible. Confidence is low on the strength and timing, however, confidence is higher for the cold air. MKK && .AVIATION...A ridge of high pressure and robust northerly winds continued across the North Coast today. Except for a few pockets of brief early morning stratus at the coast, conditions were generally VFR through the day. There were also a few patchy areas of fog over some interior river valleys this morning. By late morning to early afternoon, a band of stratus was developing along the North Coast. Clouds were quite spotty and shreddy at 1 pm, except over Ferndale and Cape Mendocino where clouds were more pronounced. 1 pm VIS SAT PIC...as well as observer reports...both indicated stratus expanding toward coast. At 2 PM EKA was CIG BKN006. However, the low clouds may pop in then temporarily pop out until early evening when MVFR- IFR Cigs may impact coastal air terminals. Today will be the last day of strong high pressure before a weather change, associated with a cold front, approaches the Redwood Coast late day Saturday. This weather disturbance will be preceded and accompanied by increased clouds and rain in the latter TAF period...and afterwards. /TA && .MARINE...Fresh to strong northerly winds and steep seas will diminish tonight and Saturday as a trough sags into the Pacific Northwest. Strong northerly winds will return for Sunday and continue into early next. These winds are expected to be near gale force. Northwesterly swells will continue to roll through the waters during this time frame with the largest one moving into the region Sunday night into Monday.
