What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Jul 17, 5:05 AM PDT, 9 hours 18 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 17, 5:05 AM PDT, 9 hours 18 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
505 AM PDT Tue Jul 17 2018

.SYNOPSIS...Hot and dry conditions will continue across inland
northwest California this week. Marine air will still prevail
along the immediate coast, with persistent low cloudiness and
areas of fog.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A strong upper-level high centered across the
southwestern United States will continue to be the dominant force
in the sensible weather across northwestern California. Heights
will build in the wake of yesterdays departing trough, and
inland temperatures will heat up even beyond Mondays hot readings.
Temperatures this hour are already running a few degrees warmer
compared to this time yesterday, and thus it is reasonable to
expect 105 to 110 degree highs for the usual hot interior valley
locations. Heat advisories will continue for portions of the
interior through Wednesday. It is possible that these will end up
being the hottest days of the summer season for the interior, and
the risk of heat-related illness for sensitive groups will be
moderate.

Meanwhile, along the coast, low clouds are widespread with some
areas of fog. The marine layer is a little deeper than yesterday
morning, and extends a little farther inland, which may result in
a more limited period of sunshine this afternoon along portions of
the Humboldt and southern Mendocino coast. Coastal morning clouds
and afternoon sun will largely be the rule for the rest of the
week, although areas around Crescent City and Shelter cove will
begin to benefit from localized offshore flow which should result
in less clouds there beginning tonight.

Some upper-level troughiness tracking southward out of the Gulf of
Alaska and toward the Pacific Northwest later this week may try to
put a slight dent in the heat. However, the latest model guidance
appears to keep the dome of hot weather holding strong across
California and the southwest into the end of the week. Thus, later
forecasts may need to bump temperatures up and extend Heat
Advisories beyond Wednesday for portions of the interior. The
weekend holds more promise for interior high temperatures to at
least lower into the 90s. Some mid-level monsoonal moisture will
likely try to make a run at northern California later this week,
and at least the GFS points toward a chance of isolated
thunderstorms around the Yolla Bolly mountains Friday
afternoon...otherwise it is possible that our region remains dry
through next weekend. /AAD

&&

.AVIATION...Low clouds blanket the coastal waters and adjacent land
areas up to around 1500 ft elevation. Visibilities have occasionally
dropped below 3 SM, but have continued to fluctuate. Visibilities
may drop lower later tonight. Conditions are expected to gradually
improve later this morning, but clouds will linger very near the
coast, particularly near KACV and S to Humboldt Bay and Cape
Mendocino. Some low clouds are noted well S of KUKI. However, those
clouds are expected to remain S of the terminal before dissipating
after sunrise. Winds are expected to remain generally light across
the area. /SEC

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds will increase later today and tonight. A
Small Craft Advisory continues for the outer waters. A Gale Watch
remains in effect for the N outer waters starting Wednesday
afternoon for frequent wind gusts over 35 knots. Occasional gusts to
gale force will be possible over the S waters. Seas will build to 12
to 14 feet in the outer waters by late Wednesday and Thursday. The
highest winds and seas will affect areas near and downwind from
Point Saint George and Cape Mendocino. /SEC
