TONIGHT...

* Lake Shore Flooding...Northeast winds of 20 to 25 mph gusting 
  to 30 mph will produce waves in the 3 to 5 foot range on the 
  inner Bay and in the 6 to 9 foot range on the outer Bay and Lake
  Huron. The combination of the elevated waves and wind pushing 
  water inland may result in flooding of prone areas along the 
  shoreline. 

* Impacts...the water level of Saginaw Bay and along portions of 
  the southern Lake Huron basin is forecast to climb over 4 feet 
  above chart datum today. High water levels combined with wave 
  action will have the potential to result in shoreline flooding 
  and erosion. Damage to docks, boat lifts and watercraft anchored
  along the shoreline are also possible. 

* Beach Hazards...High wave action alone can make swimming 
  difficult on days such as this. Incoming waves in rapid 
  succession can tire a swimmer quickly.

...LAKESHORE FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM EDT
SUNDAY...

* Lake Shore Flooding...Northeast winds of 20 to 25 mph will 
  produce waves in the 2 to 4 foot range and occasionally to 5 
  feet today through Sunday. The combination of high undisturbed 
  water level, wave action, and strong wind is expected to 
  result in shoreline flooding of prone areas. 

* Impacts...The Lake St Clair undisturbed water level has 
  averaged about 46 inches above chart datum and flood level is 
  54 inches above chart datum. The high water levels combined 
  with high wave action and strong northeast wind will likely 
  produce an effective water level capable of flooding prone 
  areas around the shoreline. Damage to docks, boat lifts and 
  watercraft anchored along the shoreline is also possible.

.DISCUSSION...

A reinforcing cold front washed out in the surface pressure field
during the early morning but has opened the door on a firm surge of
low level cold and dry air advection. Expect this holds the upper
hand on conditions today across SE Michigan even as rain showers
linger nearby south of the Ohio border. Dry air in the low levels
will be too much for any stray surges of mid level moisture
attempting to move north from the Ohio Valley frontal zone. In fact,
model data shows the mid levels of the front being nudged farther
south during the day due to subtle height falls within NW upper flow
over the central Great Lakes. While dry air in the low levels holds
back the rain, generous coverage of high clouds limits daytime
heating through the day with the possible exception of the Tri
Cities and northern Thumb where cirrus will be thin enough for
better insolation. However, given the colder air in place compared
to yesterday, filtered sunshine is not expected to be enough to
boost temps out of the 60s as 850 mb temps drop to around 8C across
the entire area during the afternoon. The main story for today and
tonight will be increasing northeast wind and the wave/water impacts
on shoreline areas from around Saginaw Bay and southern Lake Huron to
the Lake St Clair shoreline. Lakeshore Flood advisories are in effect
for these areas.

We maintain a holding pattern over the southern Great Lakes tonight
as the Gordon remnants continue to organize into a new low pressure
over the lower Ohio Valley. Plan to maintain a low POP near the Ohio
border as mid levels of the frontal zone drift back northward. At
the same time, the short wave ridge within the northern stream flow
aloft moves over the central Great Lakes. The ridge progression is
slightly slower and pauses the northward track of the Ohio Valley
low overnight and early Sunday. This process, combined with ongoing
cool and dry air advection in the low levels, results in just a slow
south to north onset of showers across SE Michigan through Sunday
afternoon. Eastward passage of the short wave ridge then opens the
door for the Ohio Valley low to make a stronger northward move
during the final deepening stage of the system. Veering low to mid
level flow then starts a strong moisture transport/theta-e advection
pattern to support increasing coverage of showers over SE Michigan
through Sunday evening before transitioning to a deformation phase
of forcing while overhead later Sunday night and early Monday. The
track of the system is slightly farther east in the latest model
cycle which maintains a southward and eastward position of the QPF
maximum and decreases potential for excessive rainfall in our area.
The deformation axis will be productive while a mid level dry slot
punches in from the Ohio border up through metro Detroit Sunday
night. The latest supply of QPF guidance offers manageable storm
totals ranging from about 0.5 inch in the Tri Cities to 1.5 inches
toward Monroe for the 36 hours ending Monday afternoon.

Any light rain lingering into Monday afternoon exits with the low
pressure system by evening. Clouds, however, are projected to linger
much of the night before the influence of high pressure pushes a
clearing trend during Tuesday. The high sets up across the central
Great Lakes through the mid week period and maintains dry conditions
and promotes a gradual warming trend. High temperatures return to
near 80 Wednesday and Thursday.

.MARINE...

Increased east-northeast flow will continue through the weekend as
we remain in between high pressure over Ontario and a cold front
over Ohio. In addition the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon are
progged to track from the mid-Mississippi Valley into the Great
Lakes Sunday, strengthening the gradient locally as it approaches.
This will result in winds gusting to around 25 knots today through
Sunday with the onshore flow building wave heights to 3 to 5 feet
along the shore thus a Small Craft Advisory is in effect through
Sunday night for all nearshore zones. High pressure will build back
into the region Monday as the low pressure system moves east,
resulting in more favorable marine conditions for early next week.

.HYDROLOGY...

Dry today as high pressure over Ontario continues to bring dry air
into Lower Michigan. Rain will start to move in later tonight as the
remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon lift north and interact with a
cold front draped across Ohio. Rain will spread south to north
tonight, filling in across most of southeast Michigan by Sunday
evening. Periods of potentially heavy rainfall could develop Sunday
into Monday. Currently, our southeastern counties look to have the
best chance to receive over an inch of rain during this period,
while around a half inch to one inch is possible elsewhere.

High pressure poised north of the Great Lakes will maintain steady
northeast flow across the area throughout the forecast period. Gusts
to 20 knots or more will become more prevalent by midday Saturday as
gradient flow tightens between this high and approaching remnant low
that once was Gordon. A veil of cirrus will persist as well and
thicken with time on Saturday. Otherwise, just a stray filament of
stratus/strato-cu overnight within northeast flow as some moisture
is picked up from Lake Huron.

For DTW...Northeast flow will hold through the period with wind
speeds remaining near northeast flow operations threshold overnight.
Gusts around 20 kt will then develop on Saturday. VFR ceilings will
persist.
