Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Dodge City KS 337 PM CDT Mon Apr 2 2018 ...Updated Short Term, Long Term, and Fire Weather Sections... .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 336 PM CDT Mon Apr 2 2018 High winds will be the story this forecast period tonight into Tuesday. Late this afternoon we were tracking a vigorous shortwave trough entering the Northern Rockies. This storm continued to promote surface cyclogenesis across northeast Colorado with tightening MSLP gradient over Kansas. South winds were sustained in the 16 to 20 knot range across much of western and central KS. The due south winds were actually recirculating modified cold air around the departing surface high over the Ohio Valley...as far west as Barber County where temperatures were stuck in the 40s at 20Z. On the other side of the coin, temperatures shot up to the mid 80s at Elkhart in the downslope-warmed airmass emanating out of New Mexico. Once the surface low finally pushes out into Kansas overnight, a surge of north winds will develop in its wake. Anticyclogenesis will be robust over eastern Wyoming in the 06-12Z time frame. The MSLP gradient will tighten as a result over the High Plains of western Nebraska and Kansas with 3-hr pressure rises on the order of 10-12 millibars. Behind the front, intense cold advection will occur from the surface through about 825mb, and this layer will become well- mixed, as forecast soundings indicate. Both the GFS and NAM models show 40 knot winds starting only a quarter of the way up the mixed layer, especially 12-15Z, so a period of 35KT surface winds appears likely. These forecast soundings (over much of western Kansas) also show 50 to 54KT at the top of the cold advection mixed layer, supporting the occasional 50KT gust at the surface, so confidence is quite high in high winds, thus the upgrade (and expansion) of the High Wind Watch to a High Wind Warning. As mentioned, the 12-15Z time frame looks to be the best time frame for most locations of western Kansas for high wind. Even though the isallobaric component to the high wind event will start to wane by 18z, mixing will continue to increase from continued strong cold advection and added component of insolation. Those locations that saw highs in the 70s and 80s today will certainly see cooler temperatures Tuesday, but the wind component behind the front will have enough downslope to it that the surface airmass will not be overly chilly. We are looking at afternoon temperatures ranging from the upper 40s north to the mid 50s south along the Oklahoma border. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday) Issued at 336 PM CDT Mon Apr 2 2018 The first part of the Long Term period (Wednesday and Thursday) will be rather tranquil with flat west-northwest flow aloft and moderating temperatures back into the 60s to lower 70s. Thursday looks particularly pleasant with hardly any MSLP gradient across southwest Kansas leading to potentially very light winds. This will all change by late Thursday Night into Friday as another strong cold front pushes south. This front will have particularly cold air behind it, as suggested by the latest ECMWF model, with 850mb temperatures as low as -10C as far south as Trego-Ellis County 18z Friday. This would certainly support daytime temperatures in the lower to mid 30s, if not upper 20s! The latest official forecast is not that cold, but look for a further reduction in forecast temperatures Friday if this trend in the global models continues. We may also be dealing with some light winter precipitation of some degree, and for now we have 20-30 POPs in the grids for this possibility. Like the temperature forecast, the precipitation forecast may be boosted should trends continue, although any precipitation should be light given the rather zonal flow aloft. Despite the zonal nature to the flow pattern, 800-700mb baroclinicity will be quite impressive. The cool air will likely continue into Saturday, mainly in the east in the return flow of south-southeasterly winds. Yet another fast- moving, impressive storm system will likely zip across the Central Plains around Sunday-Sunday Night, but at this time, it does not appear to be a big precipitation maker for southwest Kansas. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1231 PM CDT Mon Apr 2 2018 The main issue for aviation will be high winds on Tuesday. An intense cold front will push through during the 09-12Z time frame with an abrupt wind shift in direction and strength immediately behind the front. Sustained winds around 35 knots are forecast for about a 6 hour time frame toward the end of this TAF period with gusts occasionally touching 50 knots. A dry atmosphere behind the front should keep flight category VFR for all terminals && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 336 PM CDT Mon Apr 2 2018 Another critical fire weather day is likely over a larger area of southwest Kansas on Tuesday as high winds of 30-40 mph develop with gusts in the 55-60 mph range. The very dry downslope airmass behind the front will lead to dewpoint temperatures in the single digits (degF) over a fairly large area along/west of U283. A Red Flag Warning will be issued for much of the forecast area, even in areas where min RH will be around 20-23 percent given the high winds gusting to 55+ mph.
