.SYNOPSIS...
A strong storm system will impact the area into Friday. High
pressure will then return this weekend with drier weather which
will then generally persist through early next week before more
significant rain chances return once again later next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A cluster of heavy showers moved through portions of the Tri-
County area just before daybreak, aided by strong upper jet
divergence and shortwave energy. The upper divergence is on a
weakening trend due to the original jet streak having shifted
north. However, as the upper trough continues to dig and become
slightly negatively tilted, mid-level divergence will increase,
enhancing low-level omega. Morning Precipitable Water values
are around 1.6" and expected to increase to around 1.8" this
afternoon as 0-6 km flow increases to 50 kt. Very strong low-
level convergence is expected to develop across coastal SC by
mid-afternoon as a cold front approaches the GA waters and a
weak surface low develops ahead of it. Ongoing forecast is
pretty well on track with the highest QPF between 18Z and 00Z
over the Tri-County area. This lines up with where the Flood
Watch is in effect. The greatest flooding risk will be if heavy
rainfall continues into the 6 pm high tide.
Breezy to windy conditions are expected to develop, especially
in southeast SC later this afternoon as the wind max moves up
the coast. The strongest winds look to be right along the
Charleston County coast.
Tonight: The axis of deepest moisture is expected to shift off
to the northeast and east, while the complex base of the mid
level trough shifts closer to the area. Shower chances will
continue, although the coverage will become less with time as
deep layered moisture begins to shred out. Surface winds may be
gusty at times. Temps will be mild with lows in the 50s most
areas.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Confidence is high this period. Deep low pressure across the region
will be moving northeast away from the area Friday but enough lift
and wrap-around moisture will be present for a few mainly light
showers through the afternoon. Can't completely rule out a few
rumbles of thunder given the mid-level instability but we think
chances are too small to mention at this time. Otherwise, the main
impact will be gusty wind near Advisory levels (40 mph) due to the
tight pressure gradient caused by strengthening low pressure. Cooler
and drier high pressure will then return into Saturday before some
moderation in temperatures occurs Sunday as high pressure shifts to
the south and east of the area and winds turn more southerly.
Temperatures should remain above normal through Friday and again
Sunday but otherwise be near normal.
Lake Winds...Winds will increase over Lake Moultrie Friday and
will likely reach Advisory criteria with 25 knot gusts.

Mainly dry conditions expected until Wed night or Thu when deeper
moisture returns to the area. Cooler and dry conditions expected to
prevail this period with high pressure generally dominating.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Mainly IFR conditions at both sites through late afternoon or
early evening due to a combination of low ceilings and vsbys in
rain. Gusty winds also anticipated this afternoon as low
pressure moves through the area. Overnight, mainly MVFR ceilings
expected behind a cold front with decreasing coverage of rain
showers. VFR conditions expected to return by daybreak Friday
though winds will become quite gusty heading into the afternoon.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Restrictions expected into Friday
night with periods of IFR or worse due to low clouds/rain. Also,
gusty winds likely Friday/Friday night.

.MARINE...
A turbulent time in store for the waters through tonight. Winds
and seas will increase as a strong warm front shifts north. A
Gale Warning is in effect today across GA waters beyond 20 NM as
a potent low level wind max crosses the waters. Mixing potential
over shelf waters looks unimpressive with a stable marine layer
over cooler waters so we have only SCAs. The gales should brush
Charleston waters this afternoon as a surface low moves
through. Today's forecast has a lot of potential error involved
with strong wind fields and a large variation of sea surface
temps from the Pilot Buoys to the Gulf Stream. Mariners should
monitor local conditions closely today before venturing out.
Seas are forecast to build to 10 ft or greater beyond 20 NM
offshore.
Tonight: Conditions will continue to be rough as the pressure
gradient tightens between deep low pressure over Western GA and
high pressure well offshore. A Gale Warning has been issued all
waters including the CHS Harbor in effect near daybreak on
Friday. Until then seas will remain very rough with highest seas
along the SC coast with 8-10 ft seas likely.
Friday through Tuesday: Conditions will remain poor into early
Saturday as a strong storm system affects the area. Gale force gusts
are likely in all waters at some point. Improving conditions are
then expected into early next week as high pressure returns.
High Surf: Given the strengthening SE winds today into tonight,
seas are expected to rapidly build near the coast. Based on the
latest NWPS breaking wave guidance, we are seeing a prolonged
period of possible 5-8 ft breaking waves. Thus, we issued a High
Surf Advisory for all beaches; the GA coast runs through noon
Friday and the SC coast goes through Friday evening.

.HYDROLOGY...
We have maintained the Flash Flood Watch for this afternoon and
evening for the four counties from Colleton County east. Of the
12Z guidance that has already arrived, and some of the high-res
guidance, there are indications that a slug of heavy rainfall
will move onshore in this area after 1 pm as a surface low
shifts up the coast and a strong low-level jet develops. Heavy
rainfall could linger into the realm of the 6 PM high tide which
could cause considerable flooding issues in coastal urban areas.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Tides will be on the increase late this week due to a full moon
and strong onshore winds, possibly reaching marginal Coastal
Flood Advisory levels around Charleston during tonight's high
tide and/or Friday morning's high tide.
Tides will then likely fall pretty low (about -2 to -3 ft MLLW)
Friday night as strong winds turn offshore leading to some
navigation issues for mariners.
