.SYNOPSIS...
Lake effect snow showers will become more organized tonight
into Thursday morning. A clipper low will cause widespread snow
showers Thursday afternoon and evening, with colder air following
in its wake through the weekend. High pressure will build into
the region with dry weather for Sunday and Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The axis of a surface ridge will slip a little further
southeastward tonight, meanwhile a modest clipper low will track
into the Upper Great Lakes. A weak WSW flow this evening will
result in disorganized lake effect snow showers east of Lake
Erie. However, winds will increase and become better aligned
late this evening and then shift to the southwest late tonight.
As a result, snow showers should organize into a singular band
off Lake Erie around midnight, and during the early morning
hours off Lake Ontario. Inversion heights will be 7-8k ft, this
has still been deep enough to support moderate to heavy lake
snows since the cloud tops are amply cold to support dendritic
snow growth. As a result, have raised forecast snowfall amounts
a bit for tonight while the flow remains well aligned. Shifting
winds will result in a mobile band, which should limit snowfall
amounts tonight in the 2 to 4 inch range. Even so, the lake
effect band will produce snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour
which will impact the Thursday morning commute as it progresses
northward across the Buffalo and Watertown metro areas.
On Thursday, steepening boundary layer lapse rates, increasing
moisture, and still present cold 850Ts of around -9C, will help
intensify the lake bands off of each lake. This will be somewhat
offset by a increasing directional wind shear. The likely result
is less intense but more widespread lake effect snows. Meandering
of the lake band over the northtowns and northwestern Jefferson
County on Thursday will also help aid in reducing snow amounts
that any one place in particular will receive. It is important
to note, that if winds are less sheared, or weaker in general it
will result in higher snowfall amounts over areas where the
band(s) of snow persist the longest. Temperatures hovering
around freezing will also help keep snow ratios down, with most
areas on Thursday receiving around 3 to 5 inches of snow where
the lake effect snow band persist the longest off of Lake Erie.
Off of Lake Ontario, snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches will
focus on Jefferson County and far northern portions of Oswego
and Lewis counties.
As the clipper shifts from the Georgian Bay to western Quebec
between Thursday morning and evening, it will drag a cold front
across the area. This front will cause lake effect snow bands to
shift south and east, and will also bring a period of general
snow to the rest of the forecast area Thursday afternoon.
Gusty winds on Thursday will be strongest within and near the
strongest portions of the lake effect snow bands, with some wind
gusts to 35 MPH possible, resulting in areas of blowing snow and
reducing visibilities even more so than with just the snowfall.
Otherwise, overnight low temperatures will be in the 20s
tonight, and highs will average in the lower to mid 30s on
Thursday.
For this update, the only change was to issue a Winter Weather
Advisory for Niagara County. Otherwise, previous headlines
remain as outlined below.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Moderate to locally heavy lake snows will be ongoing Thursday
evening east of the lakes, likely positioned across the Buffalo
Southtowns and western Southern Tier off Lake Erie and over the Tug
Hill off Lake Ontario. The intensity of the lake snows should lessen
through Thursday night, as the low level flow becomes northwest and
moisture profiles become a little less favorable. Though the
intensity will be diminishing, we will still see additional
accumulating snowfall southeast of Lake Erie with upslope
enhancement and east-southeast of Lake Ontario with multiple bands
producing a few inches along with upslope enhancement across the
southern Tug Hill.
A cold northwest flow will continue during the day Friday, as high
pressure builds into the Ohio Valley/southern Great Lakes. While
there will continue to be multiple streamers coming in of the lakes,
additional accumulation for the most part will be light. If any
upstream connections can develop, it is not out of the question to
see a few locally heavier snow bursts where a few inches may
accumulated. Temperatures will only reach the lower to mid 20s.
A shortwave trough will track across the eastern Great Lakes Friday
night into Saturday. The added moisture and ascent from this wave
will promote a chance of snow showers with the potential for some
lake enhanced snows east of the lakes, where some minor accumulation
will be possible.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A rare quiet period will occur for the beginning of next week...this
at a time when climatologically we usually see an increase in
significant lake effect snow events. Surface high pressure will
slide by our region early in the week, maintaining a storm system to
our south and east through Tuesday. This surface high may continue
fair weather into Wednesday, though there are some hints in the
model guidance that a northern stream shortwave passing across
southern Canada may push a frontal boundary towards Lake Ontario
Tuesday night and Wednesday with a slight chance for precipitation.
Temperatures through the period will average near to just below
normal.

.AVIATION /00Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Lake effect snows will be the key factor through 18Z Thursday.
Then a cold front will cross the region and bring general snow
showers to the rest of the area. Winds gusting to 35 mph will
result in areas of blowing snow on Thursday.
BUF/IAG...Lake snow band will move S-N roughly between 09Z-12Z,
give or take a an hour or two. Expect a few hours of moderate
snow (1/2SM or less) at each location, with snowfall rates
briefly diminishing late morning. Snow will pick up again with
the afternoon cold frontal passage, followed by improving
conditions late in the afternoon.
ART...Lake snow will move in shortly after midnight, with
periods of moderate (1/2SM or less) snow lasting through
Thursday afternoon.
JHW...Expect mainly VFR conditions tonight outside of a passing
lake effect snow shower. Steady snows will move in around noon
Thursday with lake enhancement resulting in persistent moderate
snow Thursday afternoon.
ROC...Mainly VFR until Thursday afternoon with IFR snow showers
arriving with the cold front.
Outlook...
Thursday night...Areas of IFR east of the lakes in lake effect
snow showers.
Friday...Lake effect snow showers and areas of IFR southeast of
the lakes...with VFR/MVFR elsewhere.
