.SYNOPSIS...
Expect quiet and largely dry weather to continue through the rest
of today as high pressure remains draped across the Lower Great
Lakes. A strengthening storm system tracking northeastward off the
Atlantic coastline will then bring some light snow mainly to the
North Country tonight, followed by more widespread light to
moderate snow Tuesday through Wednesday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Latest surface analysis shows weak high pressure draped across the
Lower Lakes Region...with another developing Nor'easter taking shape
offshore of the Carolina coast. Under the surface ridge...our area
remains largely dry as of this writing...save for some diminishing
flurries across Niagara county and the Niagara Peninsula.

Through the rest of today...the developing Nor'easter will continue
to become better organized while tracking northeastward well offshore
of the Carolina and Virginia coastlines. Meanwhile to its west across
our region...the lingering surface ridge will continue to weaken while
gradually giving way to a developing broad inverted trough...whose
axis will set up across Central New York. While a few additional
flurries will be possible across the North Country later this
afternoon in the vicinity of this developing trough axis...the
rest of the day should continue to be quiet and largely dry...with
remnant areas of lower clouds mixed with some regions of partial
sunshine through the early to mid afternoon hours. Daytime highs
will be in the lower to mid 30s for the most part...or some 5 to 7
degrees below normal.

As the Nor'easter strengthens and passes well to the southeast of
Long Island tonight...the inverted trough across Central New York
will become more pronounced...with increasing low level convergence/
lift along this boundary and deepening moisture leading to the
development of periods of light snow across the North Country...which
will likely lead to 1 to 3 inches of accumulation by Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile further to the west precipitation should remain confined
to just some scattered snow showers that will only very slowly
increase in coverage through the night...with these producing some
localized accums of a half inch or less. Expect overnight lows to
range through the 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
For western and north central NY, this next weather system bears a
strong resemblance to the last long-duration event from this past
Wednesday evening through Saturday morning. This will result in an
extended period of mostly light snow on Tuesday and Wednesday with
steadier snows east of the lakes due to upsloping and lake
enhancement. Two-day storm totals may approach a foot in some of
these locations, but for the most part 12 and 24 hour totals appear
to fall into the advisory category. Keep in mind that although this
is a similar set up, subtle variations in timing, location, and wind
direction may result in different snowfall amounts for any given
location. Now for the details...

On Tuesday an inverted trough will extend from a strong coastal low
westward to a closed 500 mb low which will be across the Lower Great
Lakes. This trough axis will gradually drop southward across western
New York Tuesday with increasing moisture and snow showers.
Steadiest snows will be east of Rochester where a general 1-3 inches
of snow is expected during the day.

Northwesterly winds will increase Tuesday night and Wednesday, with
increasing moisture from the coastal low. Wrap around moisture,
northwesterly upslope flow, and some lake enhancement will result in
periods of snow showers, which will have the most accumulating power
across the higher terrain east of Lake Erie and on the Tug Hill. One
subtle difference with this storm system compared to the last, is
temperatures should run a couple of degrees cooler, which could
support a little better lower elevation accumulation, although
accumulations will still be somewhat limited during the day
Wednesday with the high March sun angle.

Slightly drier air will build in from the west with a narrow ridge
axis, with snow becoming less widespread from west to east. Snow
showers will last most of the night east of Lake Ontario where
moisture will continue to be ample and where upsloping and lake
enhancement will continue.

Temperatures will continue to run slightly below average through
this periods, with daily highs in upper 20s to lower 30s, and
nightly lows mainly in the 20s.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The deep trough over New England will finally begin to pull away
from the region and into the Canadian Maritimes late in the week.
There will still be enough low level moisture, lake instability, and
northwest upslope flow to support a few more snow showers Thursday,
especially across higher terrain with minor additional
accumulations. These snow showers will then slowly taper off
Thursday night through Friday night, but may last longer if colder
guidance verifies. Model consensus continues to trend colder for
Friday. Colder solutions forecast 850mb temperatures around
-15C on Friday which would result in some lake effect snow
showers and high temperatures struggling to reach freezing.

On Saturday somewhat warmer air will begin to make progress moving
into the eastern Great Lakes as a ridge over the Midwest flattens
and moves eastward. Warm advection will spread into our region and
bring temperatures back close to average. Temperatures will warm to
near to slightly above normal Sunday before a backdoor cold front
crosses the region Sunday night, possibly ushering in another period
of below normal temperatures at the start of next week.

Looking a little farther ahead, there is no sign of any sustained
early spring weather over the next few weeks, with cold winning out
most of the time. A large reservoir of cold air will continue to
build across central and northern Canada, re-enforced by periods of
cross polar flow. This will keep temperatures across much of the
northern half of North America, including the northern tier of the
United States, colder than average. Runs of the CFSv2 model over the
past several days support this pattern lasting through the end of
the month.

.AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
For the 12Z TAFS, stratus lingering across the region will
largely lie in the low VFR range of 3 to 5K feet. This layer of
clouds will thin some more through the morning hours under high
pressure aloft before clouds thicken across the region as the
next storm system nears from the south.

With a light northerly flow, clouds will remain VFR/MVFR this
afternoon and evening. By this evening a storm system will be
deepening off the Carolina coastline. This system will begin to
slide northward late in the period and within an inverted surface
trough, bring snow across the eastern zones, including a period of
snow likely with IFR flight conditions at KART. Snow may also
back in across the Genesee Valley, including KROC.

Outlook...

Tuesday...VFR to IFR with snow showers likely... especially east of
the Genesee valley. Tuesday night and Wednesday...IFR to MVFR with
snow showers likely. Thursday...VFR to MVFR in scattered snow
showers.
Friday...VFR.

.MARINE...
A departing area of high pressure will maintain quiet conditions on
the lakes and rivers today. Winds will become northwesterly tonight
in response to the nearing coastal low, with speeds remaining around
15 knots or less.

By Tuesday these northwest winds will strengthen further in response
to a deepening low pressure off the New England coastline. Winds and
later waves will rise to small craft thresholds Tuesday and Tuesday
night on both lakes.
