.SYNOPSIS...
A frontal boundary across the region will sharpen, with snow
changing to a wintry mix through tonight. The boundary will then
lift slightly northward and warmer air will briefly build into the
area on Sunday with rain or mixed precipitation. High pressure
building across the Great Lakes will then supply the vast majority
of the region with fair dry weather for the first part of the new
work week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The forecast during this period is complex, with a sharp frontal
boundary expected to be somewhere across the region through Sunday.
Although precipitation will not be constant, disturbances will track
along the boundary and result in periods of mixed precipitation.
Although the specifics are challenging, there will be at least a
period of freezing rain across the vast majority of the area. Winter
weather advisories were issued for the entire cwa, with various
start and end times. Now for the specifics...

This afternoon a front extends roughly from Jamestown to Syracuse,
with temperatures below freezing north of the boundary and in the
upper 30s to lower 40s just south of it. Model consensus
consistently slides the boundary slightly southeastward tonight. On
Sunday there is still some spread in guidance, with a consensus
tracking a wave of low pressure along the boundary just southeast of
a Buffalo to Watertown line. The track will be critical since 850mb
temperatures will warm to near +8C on Sunday which would result in a
freezing rain thermal profile for areas to the north of this track
which will remain below freezing.

A jet streak is passing to the north, which has placed our region in
the favorable right-rear quadrant for lift this afternoon through
this evening. This is bringing precipitation which is mainly
snow, but also mixed with sleet and freezing rain across the
Western Southern Tier through this evening. Additional snow
accumulations from this will be light, generally 1-2 inches.
After about midnight, expect a lull in the action, with no real
focus for large scale lift outside of small chances associated
with the boundary.

Another round of precipitation will move in Sunday, associated with
the wave of low pressure. This should be the more significant of the
two rounds in terms of the potenial for icing. Light ice
accumulations up to a tenth of an inch are likely across the Niagara
Frontier and North Country once precipitation reaches the area on
Sunday. There is lower confidence further south, where there is
uncertainty in the start time of the precipitation and the position
of the boundary. This said, at least some light icing is expected in
most other areas through Sunday morning and possibly into the
afternoon hours. Areas which do break in the warm sector should warm
dramatically, well into the 40s with 50 degrees even possible.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A shortwave trough will move across the Ontario Providence Sunday
night. Low pressure will be near Montreal with an associated cold
front stretched from northern VT/NH south to central PA Sunday
night. Cold air advection will be across Western NY while
precipitation comes to an end across the region Sunday night.
Warm air aloft that was responsible for the mixed precipitation
Saturday - Sunday, will slowly move eastward Sunday evening. Any
rain, sleet or freezing rain will transition back to snow
Sunday evening. Additional ice accumulation of a few hundredths
and snow accumulation of up to an inch are expected Sunday
evening.

The cold front will move off the New England coast by Monday
morning. Scattered lake effect snow showers are possible southeast
of Lake Ontario however dry air and high pressure will keep
intensity weak. Little to no accumulation is expected.
High temperatures in the upper 20s/low 30s expected Monday
however a W-NW winds will keep wind chills in the teens to low
20s.

High pressure moves overhead Monday night. Dry and clear conditions
are expected into Tuesday. Temperatures will drop into the teens.
High pressure will shift over northern New England Tuesday. Return
flow will begin across the region Tuesday and temperatures will
climb into the 30s by Tuesday afternoon.

Some returning moisture along with a weak wave passing by to our
north may trigger a few snow showers Tuesday night, with low
temperatures in the mid to upper 20s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A split flow regime will dominate much of the long term period as
an amplifying upper low carves out off the California coast.
Eventually, the northern stream energy is likely to become more
influential, but model guidance is in disagreement with respect
to how that happens. This will result in a low confidence
forecast from Friday into the weekend.

Wednesday for the most part should remain fairly dry, with only
a slight chance for precipitation as the 12Z ECMWF pushes a
weak warm front and swings an upper-level disturbance through
the area. Mild weather will be the story for the mid week period
within a southerly flow regime enabling temperatures to warm
mostly into the 40s both Wednesday and Thursday.

Pieces of energy will eject out in the split flow from the west
coast upper low, interacting with a slowly sagging cold front
extending from the Great Lakes back into the central Plains. As
surface waves ripple along the boundary and interact with Gulf
moisture being drawn north into the lower Great Lakes, expect
increasing chances for precipitation Thursday night into Friday.

Beyond Friday, model guidance begins to diverge with respect to
how quickly the front is suppressed to the south with Canadian
high pressure following in its wake. Enough model disagreement
exists currently as to how this pattern evolves and lack of
consistency present amongst ensemble members does not generate
much confidence at this point. Will maintain chance pops later
Friday and Saturday as a result with the possibility that snow
mixes in as colder air advects in from the north.

.AVIATION /22Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An area of precipitation is moving across the area this afternoon
into early evening. This is mostly snow, lowering vsby to 1-2SM. The
exception is the Western Southern Tier (and JHW) where precipitation
is likely mixed with sleet and/or freezing rain.

Widespread snow will taper off later this evening, but there still
will be lots of moisture associated with a stalled frontal boundary
which will be just south of the area. As a result, there should be
mainly IFR conditions in low cigs during this time. Expect mainly dry
conditions through mid-morning Sunday, however it is worth nothing
that if any precipitation does occur it is likely to be freezing
rain.

Another wave of low pressure will approach Sunday with widespread
precipitation again spreading into the area. This precipitation will
be mixed, with a 3-6 hour period of light freezing rain likely at
BUF/IAG/ROC/ART on Sunday afternoon.

Outlook...

Sunday night...IFR/MVFR. Mixed precipitation changing to snow
showers.
Monday through Wednesday...Mainly VFR.
Thursday...VFR/MVFR. A chance of rain or snow.

.MARINE...
Expect a light northeast flow for most of tonight with a frontal
boundary just south of the lakes. On Sunday morning, the northeast
winds will freshen enough to produce choppy conditions for the Lake
Ontario nearshore waters west of Irondequoit Bay and especially west
of Thirty mile point. Winds will then back to the northwest during
the afternoon as weak low pressure will pass by to our south. It
appears marginal, but this may require small craft headlines.

As we proceed through Sunday night into Monday...fresh to strong
westerlies across Lake Ontario will generate waves that will reach
small craft advisory criteria.
