.SYNOPSIS...
A weak clipper system will move through the eastern Great Lakes
tonight and early Saturday, allowing lake effect snow to become
better organized again east of Lakes Erie and Ontario with some
additional accumulations. High pressure will then bring mainly dry
weather Sunday through early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The persistent Lake Huron band of lake effect snow that was centered
on Batavia this morning has broken up into lighter, cellular snow
showers early this afternoon. These snow showers may bring a spotty
dusting to a half inch or so of fresh accumulation this afternoon
from the Niagara Frontier into the Genesee Valley and western Finger
Lakes. Light lake effect/upslope snow showers will also continue
across the western Southern Tier with another light dusting of
accumulation this afternoon. A third area of snow showers will also
continue southeast of Lake Ontario. Between the areas of lake effect
snow showers, expect clouds and a few sunny breaks. Temperatures
will remain cold, with highs in the mid 20s in most areas and teens
across the North Country.

Tonight a mid level shortwave and associated weak clipper surface
low will move from Lake Huron to Lake Ontario, before exiting into
eastern NY on Saturday. From a synoptic standpoint, this system will
produce little in the way of sensible weather with an increase in
cloud cover and perhaps a few flurries outside of lake effect areas.
More importantly, it will bring a more favorable lake effect
environment again. A ridge of high pressure will disrupt the low
level flow late this afternoon and evening, forcing any remaining
lake effect to become disorganized. The clipper will bring more
organized long axis flow and convergence over the lakes again later
tonight and Saturday. Deeper moisture and a cold pool aloft will
also allow lake induced equilibrium levels to rise again, to about
9K feet off Lake Erie and about 11K feet off Lake Ontario.

Off Lake Erie...

Expect a band of snow to become better organized again over Lake
Erie by mid evening, supported initially by land breeze
circulations. Southwest flow will increase just ahead of the
clipper, and this will likely allow the band to develop and extend
inland across the Buffalo Metro area by late evening or the early
overnight. The band will not be in Buffalo for long, the clipper
cold front will force the band onshore along the entire Lake Erie
shore and into the higher terrain of the Southern Tier overnight.
Some lingering light upslope snow will then continue across the
higher terrain of the Chautauqua Ridge late tonight and Saturday. By
Saturday evening inversion heights will lower sufficiently to end
the lake response.

As far as accumulations go, expect 1-2 inches in the Buffalo Metro
area tonight, with 2-4 inches tonight through Saturday across the
higher terrain from Southern Erie and western Wyoming counties into
the Chautauqua Ridge, and possibly along the Lake Erie shore of
southern Erie and Chautauqua counties as well if the band hangs up
along the lakeshore for a few hours. The fairly rapid changes in
wind direction should keep the band from staying in one place long
enough for advisory amounts, although this will need to be monitored.

Off Lake Ontario...

Northwest flow will keep a narrow band of lake effect snow showers
going this evening across NE Wayne and northern Cayuga counties with
a spotty dusting to an inch accumulation. This will weaken and fall
apart tonight as the ridge axis crosses the lake. A tea kettle band
may develop over the middle of the lake late tonight and early
Saturday morning, driven by land breeze circulations. Increasing
westerly flow will then allow this band to move inland across the
eastern Lake Ontario region by late morning and early afternoon
Saturday. The lake snow may temporarily fall apart behind the
clipper low late Saturday afternoon before re-organizing on WNW flow
Saturday evening across Oswego County. This band will then settle a
little south and west into Wayne and northern Cayuga County Saturday
night before weakening by Sunday morning.

As far as accumulations go, expect 1-2 inches Saturday and Saturday
night across much of the eastern Lake Ontario region, with 2-4
inches possible across portions of Oswego, N.Cayuga, and northeast
Wayne counties. Similar to Lake Erie, it appears the snow bands will
be moving around enough to prevent advisory amounts, but this will
need to be monitored.

Temperatures will continue to run below average. Expect lows in the
teens tonight in most areas, with single digits east of Lake
Ontario. Highs Saturday will be 25-30 in most areas. Lows Saturday
night will be in the teens to lower 20s in most areas, with some
single digits again east of Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Even while flow through most of the column remains northwesterly
going into Sunday, the coldest bubble of air in the low levels
starts to retreat to the northeast. This should start to rapidly
diminish lake-induced instability. Thus, snow shower chances will
summarily coast east of Lake Ontario in the morning. The net result
will be a rather quiescent day with cool northwesterly flow still in
control. The advent of a cloud breakup, however, will allow for
temperatures to be up a couple degrees relative to the early half of
the weekend.

Upper troughing continues to dominate the area into early next week.
This will allow for 850 mb temperatures to gradually decline through
the early half of the week. With no notable substantial short wave
passes early in the week, this will simply have the effect of
gradually lowering temperatures a degree or two a day. Likewise,
with no layer moisture of any significance translating through the
area, this should too give us a bit wider than seasonable diurnals.
As such, low temperatures will remain well below normal while highs
only trend a few degrees below normal.

One notable short wave passage has been continually depicted in the
GFS for a few runs centered around the Tuesday/Tuesday night time
frame. With the 12z cycle today, the Canadian is also featuring
something of a wave passage. Slight chance PoPs were introduced for
snow showers with this wave, while waiting for better model
agreement on the depth/timing of this wave is allowed to develop. It
would seem with a quick shot of cold air behind any possible wave
that some lake effect snow showers were likewise accompany its
passage. That said, more model runs will need to follow this system
in order to better hang our hats on its eventual
development/propagation through the area.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure across New England on Wednesday will gradually slide
eastward off the coast by Thursday. This should maintain dry weather
through Thursday, with its southerly return flow also warming
temperatures. A deep upper level trough will develop near Missouri
on Friday with corresponding surface low pressure also developing.By
Friday, rain is likely to move into the area, along with warming
well into the 40s. Long range model guidance is in above average
agreement on the pattern, with only minor timing/position
differences.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Light lake effect snow showers will continue southeast of the lakes
this afternoon and evening with areas of MVFR and brief/spotty IFR
conditions. A weak clipper will pass just north of the area later
tonight and Saturday. This will allow lake effect snow to become a
little better organized again east of the lakes, with areas of IFR
developing later tonight and Saturday. Off Lake Erie this snow will
briefly impact KBUF for a few hours tonight before focusing across
the western Southern Tier including KJHW late tonight and Saturday.
Off Lake Ontario, this may briefly impact KART Saturday late morning
and early afternoon before focusing at the southeast corner of the
lake near KFZY by Saturday evening.

Outlook...

Sunday through Wednesday...Mainly VFR.

High pressure will briefly build over the eastern Great Lakes this
afternoon and evening, bringing an end to the current round of Small
Craft Advisory conditions as winds and waves subside. Winds and
waves will quickly increase again Saturday as a weak clipper passes
to the north of Lakes Erie and Ontario. This will bring another
round of Small Craft Advisory conditions to both lakes.
