.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track northeastward across New England and the
Canadian Maritimes today...with lingering light rain and higher
terrain wet snow tapering off from west to east this morning. High
pressure and drier air will then build across the region this
afternoon and tonight...before sliding east and off the Atlantic
coastline on Saturday. Another deepening area of low pressure will
then track northeastward from the Central Great Lakes into Quebec
Saturday afternoon and night...and will bring another round of
showers and strong gusty winds to our area in the process.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
During the course of today...low pressure will track northeastward
across New England and the Canadian Maritimes...while high pressure
and drier air begins ridging eastward from the Ohio Valley and
Central Great Lakes. For our region...this will allow lingering
light rain and wet snow (with the latter primarily across the
higher terrain of western New York) to taper off from west to
east through the course of this morning. Additional precipitation
amounts will be on the order of a tenth of an inch or less...so
additional rainfall amounts will be insignificant...and any wet
snow accumulation across the higher terrain of far western New
York will also be rather minimal and less than an inch. Otherwise
skies will still remain fairly cloudy through the day...with
widespread lower clouds at the start of this morning gradually
giving way to lingering mid level cloudiness from northwest to
southeast. As for temps...steady cold air advection behind the
departing low will result in cooler highs ranging from the upper
30s across the higher terrain to the lower to mid 40s elsewhere.

Tonight the aforementioned surface ridge will crest across New York
State...which will promote quiet and dry weather across our region...
along with clearing skies as mid level moisture diminishes. Low
temps will generally range from the mid 20s to lower 30s...with
readings beginning to rise overnight across far western New York
as the axis of the ridge slides to the east...and warm air advection
commences between it and another area of low pressure that will be
approaching the Upper Great Lakes.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A broad area of surface high pressure will extend from New York
State into the Gulf Coast through Saturday. Meanwhile, a deepening
compact surface low will be shifting from the upper Midwest across
Lakes Michigan and Huron. The surface riding over New York will help
keep dry weather across western and central NY through the first
half of Saturday before a strong 60-70kt low level jet and cold
front shifts a band of gusty rain showers west to east across the
eastern Great Lakes region Saturday evening. Gusty south-southwest
winds 25-45mph will develop in a well-mixed boundary layer Saturday
afternoon ahead of the front. This will also help to push daytime
highs into the 50s, with mid to upper 50s likely across the Genesee
Valley and northern Finger Lakes.

A period of strong/potentially damaging wind gusts is looking more
likely along and just behind the cold front as it crosses western
and central New York Saturday evening. The track of the deepening
low and its associated strong low level jet are both favorable for
strong/high winds in the eastern Great Lakes even in late
March/early April. The first potential for the strongest winds looks
to come with the line of gusty showers sweeping across our region
along the cold front. The showers will help to drag down a portion
of the low level jet where BUFKIT profiles from both the NAM/GFS
indicate a potential for 40-50kt gusts. There may be a brief brake
in the higher wind gusts then behind the front, sharp surface
pressure rises, steepening low level lapse rates and strengthening
cold air advection can again tap into the low level jet. BUFKIT time-
height cross sections show another even higher peak in maximum wind
gusts especially in the favorable wind corridors across the lake
plains, especially the Niagara Frontier to Rochester and the Saint
Lawrence Valley. Perhaps the one negative parameter in this potenial
wind event is where the 00z GFS shows the 1.5 PV Intrusion lingering
closer to the low center which would support highest wind gust
threat perhaps north of Lake Ontario into the Saint Lawrence River
Valley. Ideally seeing this PV max tracking across western and
central New York would be more favorable. The low level jet then
exits east of western and central NY Easter morning with the highest
winds gusts tapering back toward 25mph. Have issued High Wind
Watches for the more favorable areas where the strongest wind gusts
to 60mph are most likely beginning across WNY Saturday evening and
running to Sunday morning. Jefferson county east of Lake Ontario has
also been included as BUFKIT profiles for KART indicate unobstructed
winds over Lake Ontario may also bring gusts to 60mph Saturday night
into Sunday morning. Further inland from these watches, gusty winds
in the advisory range are most likely.

Rainfall associated with the front is forecast 0.10-0.25in Saturday
afternoon/evening before a sharp drop in temperatures Saturday night
brings a change over to snow showers behind the front. Surface temps
are forecast to fall to 25-30F overnight while 850mb temps are
forecasted to fall to -14C between 09 and 12Z Sunday. While the
incoming airmass behind the front is pretty dry, there looks to be
just enough moisture to result in a chance for scattered snow
showers areawide into Sunday with a brief lake effect snow response
east of Lake Ontario. Have continued likely POPs near the Tug Hill
region early Sunday morning, with likely PoPs shifting southward
across Oswego County through mid-morning Sunday as the flow turns
more northwesterly. The incoming dry air and surface ridging will
shutdown the lake effect by Sunday evening. Accumulating snow looks
likely in the Tug Hill region Sunday morning, with amounts highly
depended on just how quickly the winds turn northwesterly Sunday
morning and how quickly the dry air arrives. Some locations could
see 3-6 inches where a Winter Weather Advisory may be needed. High
temps on Sunday will only run in the 30s but the lingering although
lighter gusty winds will make it feel more like 20s. High pressure
will move overhead Sunday night resulting in dry conditions with
perhaps some lingering lake clouds, and cool overnight lows solidly
in the 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The first week of April will be dominated by an anomalously deep
trough drifting southward from the Hudson Bay toward the Great Lakes
region. The overall result will be below normal temperatures and
unsettled weather, including chances for snow at times.

Looking at the details, high pressure centered just south of our
region Monday will provide dry weather while temperatures remain
slightly below normal. Highs Monday only expected in the upper 30s
to low 40s. Forecast confidence is starting increase in the next
weather system deepening across the Ohio Valley Monday night and
Tuesday, and moving across central NY Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning. Overall this first system should be on the mild side, with
mainly rain across the region Tuesday, but likely ending with some
snow showers Wednesday morning as the low departs to our northeast.

As cold air spills across the region in the wake of this storm
system, expect see another chance for limited lake effect snows in
the northwesterly flow Wednesday before tapering to slight chance
Wednesday night and Thursday as another area of high pressure looks
to shift over the eastern Great Lakes. High temperatures will return
to the 30s by Wednesday and Thursday, with lows solidly in the 20s
each night.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
During the course of today low pressure over New England will
continue pushing northeastward and into the Canadian Maritimes...
with high pressure and drier air building into our region from the
west. This will result in any residual rain and wet snow tapering
off this morning...and our current LIFR/IFR ceilings also improving
to VFR from northwest to southeast as widespread low stratus gives
way to lingering mid level clouds. General VFR conditions will then
persist through tonight as the high crests across New York State...
with the mid level clouds also thinning out over time.

Outlook...
Saturday...Mainly VFR with a chance of afternoon rain showers.
Saturday night...Strong gusty winds with rain and snow showers/
attendant MVFR.
Sunday...Improvement to VFR with diminishing snow showers and winds.
Monday...Mainly VFR.
Tuesday...VFR/MVFR with rain likely.

Behind departing low pressure...a somewhat brisk northwesterly
flow will produce advisory-worthy conditions along the south shore
of Lake Ontario today...before diminishing tonight as high pressure
ridges across New York State. As such...Small Craft Advisories
remain in effect as outlined below.

Later Saturday and Saturday night...a strong area of low pressure
will track northeastward from the Central Great Lakes into Quebec.
This will likely bring a round of widespread higher-end advisory
or gale force winds to the region between late Saturday afternoon
and Sunday morning. The highest potential for the latter will be
found on Lake Ontario...where a Gale Watch has been issued.
