.SYNOPSIS...

Dry and seasonably chilly weather continues today and tonight.
Low pressure passing well to our northwest will bring periods of
rain to the region Friday, which may be heavy at times. It will
be cold enough at the onset for a brief wintry mix across the
interior early Friday morning, which will impact the morning
rush hour. The rain will come to an end Friday night and it will
be a mild day on Saturday. Colder temperatures will move in
Saturday night and Sunday. Low pressure may approach late Monday
into New Year's Day, with a wintry mix possible before ending
Tuesday morning. Another front approaches Tuesday night, which
may bring rain or a wintry mix as the front passes early
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

10 am update...

High pressure settling in lending to light winds under mostly clear
conditions. Some anticipation that we'll over-achieve on temperatures
as we did yesterday. N flow persisting while the airmass aloft is
slightly cooler but relatively unchanged. Absolutely no snow cover
to speak of. Expect highs to range around the mid to upper 30s with
several locations recording high temperatures around the 40 degree
mark.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Highlights...

* Brief wintry mix/slippery travel northwest of Bos-Pvd corridor for
  the Friday morning rush hour especially in the high terrain of MA

* Wintry mix changes to rain in all areas by mid morning Friday with
  rain continuing into Friday afternoon, which may be heavy at times

Tonight...

High pressure will slowly move off the coast tonight.  Dry weather
should prevail through 6z...but we will see an increase in mid level
cloudiness ahead of low pressure lifting northeast across the Great
Lakes.  Strengthening low level jet will increase the forcing for
ascent and expect light precipitation to overspread the region from
west to east...mainly between 8z and 12z.

Ptype should be mainly rain perhaps mixed briefly with sleet along
and southeast of the Bos-Pvd corridor with temps above freezing and
southeast winds developing.  However...just northwest of the Boston
to Providence corridor there should be enough cold air for a brief
period of light snow/sleet and freezing rain.  The duration of the
light wintry mix will be longest across the high terrain of MA...but
even in these locations it will be relatively short-lived with any
snow/ice accumulations rather light.

Despite the short duration of this light wintry mix to the northwest
of the Boston to Providence corridor, it looks to occur during the
heart of the Friday morning rush hour with temps at or just below
freezing. Given this scenario...opted to expand the winter weather
advisory into northern CT as well as areas just northwest of the
Boston to Providence corridor.

Friday...

Despite the expected brief wintry mix across interior southern New
England early Friday morning it will be short-lived.  The high
pressure quickly moves east of the region as low pressure lifts into
southeast Canada.  This will allow the cold air at the surface to
quickly erode and ptype should change to all rain even in the
distant interior by 14 or 15z.

Otherwise...the main story for the rest of Friday will be periods of
rain which may be heavy at times.  Pwats 3+ standard deviations
above normal coupled with a southwest LLJ 2-3 above normal support
the on going forecast.  Fortunately...the system is rather
progressive but still expect rainfall amounts on the order of 0.50
to 1 inch in most locations.  Localized higher amounts are possible
along the east slopes of the Berks with southeast upslope flow.  We
may also see some higher amounts near the south coast on the nose of
the low level jet.  No significant flooding issues expected.

Speaking of the low level jet its pretty strong on the order of 70
to 80 knots. However...soundings show a pretty stout inversion so
have kept things just below wind advisory criteria across the far
southeast New England coast.  Something later shifts will have to
keep a close eye on though. Regardless...it should turn much milder
with high temperatures rising into the upper 40s to the middle
50s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Highlights:

* Mild, dry, and breezy Saturday
* Colder and dry Sunday and Monday
* Precipitation chances return Monday night into Tuesday

Details:

Friday night through Sunday:

Rain comes to an end from west to east Friday night as the surface
low passes north of Maine and brings a cold front through early
Saturday. Chances for showers linger over NW MA overnight where an
upslope component will help. The cold front brings with it a drier
post frontal air mass and winds out of the northwest. Under the
influence of a building high pressure, Saturday will be nice with
partly to mostly sunny skies and above average temperatures. Our
warmest temperatures comes early in the day, in the upper 40s, and
steadily drop through the day thanks to CAA and a secondary dry cold
front. This front also brings steepening low level lapse rates which
will mix down gusty winds from the lingering 35-40 kt LLJ. Some
locations along the coast and in the higher elevations could see
gusts of 20-30 kts, tapering off through the evening as the jet
moves off shore. Overnight temps return closer to average on strong
CAA; actually a bit colder than average in the teens and low 20s.

Sunday is dry and cold under a high pressure at the surface with
zonal flow aloft. This high keeps any wet systems well to our south.
Sunny skies continue while the cold pool at mid levels lingers (850
temps around -11C) bringing highs in the low 30s ahead of our next
warm up.

Monday through Wednesday:

Monday the high moves east of the region pushed out by yet another
low pressure center moving northeast toward the Great Lakes region.
On the back side of the exiting high winds come around to the
southwest advecting warm air and moisture up from the southeast U.S.
This means increasing clouds through the day on Monday and
temperatures creeping up to the low 40s. The warm front and another
strong LLJ bring precipitation chances back to the region starting
Monday night, lingering through early Tuesday. Similar to the Friday
system the atmosphere will be warm enough to make it a mostly rain
event, but we could see a brief snow/sleet/freezing rain transition
for portions of the interior. Not expecting much impact from wintry
precipitation at the moment but it is too far out to rule out at
this time.

Tuesday and Wednesday we remain on the eastern branch of a longwave
trough over the central U.S. This leaves us under continued SW flow
with multiple shortwaves rotating through of variable strength which
could bring periods of wet weather through the period. Too much
uncertainty to nail down precise timing of rain/snow at this point.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Friday/...High confidence.

Today...
SCT low-end VFR. High clouds on the increase late. Light N winds
turning E with time.

Tonight...
Lowering, thickening CIGs towards morning, W to E, towards MVFR-
IFR. Onset precip around 8z, interior N/W SN/PL/FZRA, briefly N/W
of the I-95 corridor, prolonged across the high terrain. Otherwise
expect -RA/RA. VSBY issues with wintry precip types and any SCT
pockets of RA/+RA. Winds turning S, increasing, gusts up around
25 kts for the immediate RI and MA coastlines. LLWS threats emerging
over the CT River Valley given light surface winds within the valley
with a S jet around 40 kts 2 kft aloft.

Friday into Friday night...
Wintry precip of SN/PL/FZRA transitioning to rain across the Berkshires
and Worcester Hills at the latest by 15z. Widespread-RA with pockets
of RA/+RA through 3z at latest. IFR-LIFR CIGS. VSBY issues with any
wintry / RA / +RA. S/SW winds, strongest along the coast with possible
gusts up to 40 kts. Height of winds around 21z. Coincident widespread
LLWS threats given SW jet around 40-50 kts 2 kft agl throughout. Will
see conditions improve after 3z with CIGs and VSBYs lifting, wind
threats concluding as they turn westerly.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence.
Expect wet runways beginning 9z. Could be some PL initially mixed
in with -RA, otherwise expect -RA with brief pockets RA/+RA through
3z Friday. Lowest conditions around 15z-0z, IFR CIGs and VSBYs along
with LLWS impacts of around a 45 kt SW jet 2 kft agl.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence.
Initial wintry mix of SN/PL/FZRA, transitioning in that order beginning
roughly 7z through 12z before changing over to widespread -RA with
embedded pockets RA/+RA. Can't rule out wintry precip accumulation
on runways for the AM push. Lowest conditions, IFR-LIFR 11z-23z that
is fairly coincident with LLWS threats of a 40 kt S jet around 2 kft
agl.

Outlook /Saturday through Monday/...

Saturday: VFR. Windy with local gusts to 30 kt.

Saturday Night through Sunday: VFR. Breezy.

Sunday Night: VFR.

Monday: VFR. Chance RA, slight chance SN.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.

Short Term /through Friday/...

Today...High confidence.  High pressure builds in from the west
today.  This will keep winds/seas generally below small craft
thresholds...but some 4 to 5 foot seas are possible across our
eastern most outer-waters this morning.  Feel it is too marginal
though for any small craft headlines.

Tonight...High confidence.  High pressure moving east of the waters
coupled with low pressure lifting northeast across the Great Lakes
will allow for an increasing low level jet.  Southerly small craft
wind gusts of 20 to 30 knots should develop between 6z and 12z.

Friday...Moderate confidence.  Potent southwest low level jet of 70
to 80 knots moves across the region.  As usual in these type of
scenarios...there will be a pretty stout inversion overhead.  There
is certainly the potential for a period of 35 knot wind gusts.
However...confidence not high enough to upgrade to Gale warnings at
this point.  Opted to keep the Gale watches in place and let the
next shift take a look.  Rain/fog patches will also reduce vsbys as
seas build to between 6 and 11 feet.

Outlook /Friday Night through Monday/...

Friday: Moderate risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
35 kt. Areas of rough seas. Rain, patchy fog. Areas of
visibility 1 to 3 nm.

Friday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
35 kt. Rough seas up to 12 ft. Slight chance of rain.

Saturday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with
gusts up to 30 kt. Rough seas up to 10 ft.
