.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over northern New England will move into the Gulf
of Maine today then become absorbed into a strong low pressure
east of Nova Scotia tonight and Thursday. This storm will bring
blustery NW winds to southern New England. Winds finally
diminish Friday as high pressure builds over the region. Cool
but dry weather likely lingers into Saturday before rain
arrives Saturday night into Sunday as low pressure tracks into
the Great Lakes. There could be enough lingering cold air for
freezing rain/ice across the interior Saturday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Upper low across northern New Eng will slide SE into the Gulf of
Maine today. Comma head rotating around the low across the
Great Lakes and New York where snow showers are most numerous.
Some enhancement occurring along the west slopes of the
Berkshires in westerly upslope flow, but not much snow shower
activity thus far into the eastern slopes due to downsloping.
We do expect snow showers to occasionally spill over into the
eastern slopes across far western Franklin and Hampshire
counties through today as deeper moisture moves through. Used a
weighted blend of available hi-res guidance for QPF and
snowfall which indicates snow accum of a coating to an inch or
2 along the eastern slopes of the Berkshires with locally 2-4"
over far NW Franklin county near the border of Berkshire
county. We will keep the advisory going for western Franklin
county although the higher snowfall amounts will be confined to
a small area near Monroe and Rowe.

Otherwise, sunshine this morning in the coastal plain will give
way to more cloud cover by midday as deeper moisture rotates SE
across the region. 500 mb temps -30C combined increasing
moisture in the column and a shortwave passage supports a few
showers developing this afternoon across rest of SNE, with some
snow showers across higher terrain in northern Worcester county.
Highs will be in the mid/upper 30s in the higher terrain, and
40-45 elsewhere in SNE. Gusty NW winds will develop in the
afternoon with gusts 20-30 mph.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Tonight...
Drying trend tonight as upper low moves away with decreasing
moisture which will lead to partial clearing. However, clouds
and scattered snow showers will likely continue over the
Berkshires in upslope flow and lingering low level moisture.
Gusty NW winds will persist through the night as gradient
tightens up in response to low pres bombing out below 960 mb
east of Nova Scotia. Wind gusts to 20-30 mph expected at times.
Lows upper 20s to mid 30s.

Thursday...
More sunshine expected as cyclonic flow gradually loses its
grip on New Eng. However, continued blustery with NW gusts to
35 mph. Highs will be similar to today, mid/upper 30s higher
terrain and low/mid 40s coastal plain.

Overview...

This portion of the forecast will feature a faster, nearly
zonal, mid level flow towards the end of this week. Still
watching a potent shortwave which is expected to arrive along
the West Coast Thursday night into Friday. This energy will
take a couple of days to cross the USA, reaching our area
sometime early next week. Continue to have confidence some more
wet weather will impact our region late this weekend into early
next week. Do not have much confidence yet on the exact timing
beyond Friday. Will continue to favor a consensus approach to
smooth over these less predictable details.

Temperatures....

With nearly zonal flow, not expecting big changes. Near to below
normal through Saturday. Approach of the next low pressure will
trigger some south winds and result in near to above normal
temperatures Sunday through Monday. More normal temperatures
expected Tuesday.

Precipitation...

Dry weather Thursday and Friday. Increasing risk for rainfall
late Friday into Saturday. Greatest risk right now appears to be
sometime Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. Timing will be
crucial here. Snowfall will be more likely across the higher
elevations during nighttime precipitation. Still thinking most
of southern New England remains rain. After a brief break in the
precipitation Monday, thinking we might have another round
Tuesday as a low pressure moves into the Great Lakes.

Surge currently around 1.8 ft at Boston, aided by 4 ft easterly
swell. Fortunately this early morning high tide is rather low
with storm tide peaking at 11.6 ft. The afternoon high tide is
about a foot higher, but easterly swell is forecast to diminish
and increasing W/NW flow will likely limit any surge to a foot
so not expecting any issues with this afternoons high tide.
