.SYNOPSIS...
Snowfall continues especially across the eastern half of
Southern New England this morning, dissipating this afternoon.
Colder weather follows tonight into Wednesday. Low pressure
developing on an approaching cold front may bring a rain/snow
mix changing to a period of snow Thursday night into Friday
morning, followed by a shot of arctic air Friday night and
Saturday. Some mixed precipitation or snow is possible sometime
next Sunday into Monday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
830 AM Update...

Have updated to extend the Gale Warnings to 10 AM across the
southern near shore waters. Noting gusts up to around 35 kt, but
should be diminishing by mid morning. Also extended the Wind
Advisory on Nantucket until 10 AM as well, as winds were N at
29G39kt (33G45 mph). As the snow band gradually moves E across
SE Mass and the Cape, winds should diminish as well as the
heavier snowfall.

Previous Discussion...

Decided to issue a short-fuse Winter Weather Advisory for
northern Bristol County MA and much of RI, where the heaviest
snow band has set up. Not seeing much movement of this band, but
still do expect it to migrate farther eastward through this
morning.

Current satellite and available data suggest the sfc low
continues to deepen and is no making its closest pass, about 100
nm SE of the 40/70 benchmark. For much of the overnight, the
precip was separated into two distinct bands the furthest W,
with an area of deformation associated with a weak closed H7
low. While the further E was associated with the H92-H85 LLJ
convergence. These two have finally joined forces as the H7 low
shifted E and is now a focused f-gen band across mainly SE MA
and RI. Although sparse early this morning, snowfall reports
mainly are generally between a coating and 3 inches as these
bands merged, so previous snowfall forecast for areas away from
SE MA still hold at this time.

Both low and mid lvl water vapor imagery have slowed the
progression of the sharp trof which will slide across the region
mid late day. Should also slow this banding signature down as
well. With the focus finally shifting toward areas where winter
wx advisories reside, and noting some near shore coastal front
enhancement, will maintain the advisories as they stand
spatially, but extend in time. This should hold, as the RH
continues to increase in the DGZ across SE MA and coastal front
enhancement will assist with the banding structure. SPSs will
be used to handle the slippery conditions inland. An additional
1-4 inches are possible in these areas, now that the dynamic
cooling has forced an overall change to SN.

Will also maintain current wind advisories as the core of the
LLJ is still oriented across NW MA and gusts have been recorded
near 40 kt.

Otherwise today, the low-mid lvl moisture will gradually
diminish from W-E, so areas with little to no SN until this
morning will lean toward clearing by mid to late afternoon while
E areas remain cloudy. With the sharpening trof shifting through
during the afternoon H5 temps drop to -35C or less. Aside from
the overall lack of moisture, a source of lower lvl convergence
is missing, so even though a few flurries are possible
everywhere with the wave passage after the snow bands shift
offshore, these will not be as robust as could be fully
realized should a boundary be available.

Highs are not expected to be much warmer than early morning
temps as mixing will be countered by the strong cold advection
associated with the shortwave passage.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight...
Continued clearing especially as the AVA regime associated with
acute mid lvl wave builds across New England. This also allows
cold advection to linger, along with sfc pres gradient. So not
expecting conditions for radiational cooling. In spite of this,
the cold advection should allow ambient temps to drop into the
single digits to low teens in NW MA, mainly mid teens to low 20s
near the coast and heat islands. With light NW flow maintained,
wind chills are likely to fall into the single digits by Wed
morning.

Wednesday...
High pres between two strengthening low pres systems leads to
mainly dry and mostly sunny conditions. In spite of this, thanks
to H92 temps near -8C, suggest highs mainly in the upper 20s to
low 30s, generally colder than this time of year.

High pressure slides off the southeast coast as a low pressure moves
north across eastern Canada towards Hudson's Bay. The result will be
a milder southwest flow of air. Enough forcing/moisture ahead of an
approaching cold front exists for a few showers. Depending upon
timing, some snow is possible across the higher terrain of central
and western MA, but rain is a little more likely precipitation
type.

Thursday night and Friday morning...

30/00Z guidance continues to suggest the possibility of a frontal
wave developing along a passing cold front. Should this wave indeed
develop, the timing of this front may be slowed enough where the
enhanced lift an longer duration could lead to a period of more
steady snowfall. It will likely take another couple of days to
work out these sorts of details.

Friday afternoon into Saturday...

The main story will be a shot of arctic air that follow later Friday
into Saturday, despite dry weather expected. Temperatures
expected to be falling through day Friday due to gusty NW
winds. Low temperatures by daybreak Saturday will be in the
single digits to lower teens. Wind chill values of 0 to 10 below
zero are expected. High temps on Saturday should only be mainly
in the 20s.

Sunday and Monday...

A period of mixed precipitation or snow may return Sunday into
Monday as shortwave energy approaches from the west. This
shortwave may be amplified enough to trigger coastal
cyclogenesis. There is little confidence in the details
regarding the track and timing of any coastal low this far in
advance.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...

9 AM Update...

Have nudged storm surge grids up a little more, especially for
Nantucket Harbor where now expecting a 2.5 foot surge.
Anticipate moderate coastal flooding for most of the warning
area from Hull to Plymouth to Sandwich to Eastham and Nantucket,
including Nantucket Harbor. Expect a high end minor coastal
flood event from Salisbury to Boston Harbor. There may be
pockets of inundation of 1 to 2 feet in very low lying areas
from Salisbury to Boston and Quincy and up to 3 feet in some
low lying areas along north and east facing shorelines south of
Boston. Minor to moderate beach erosion is likely along the
typically the more prone spots along Plum Island, ocean side of
the outer Cape, and the east side of Nantucket.

Prior Discussion...

Forecast remains on track with 4 AM update...

Have nudged waves and storm surge values up a tad based on
current trends in observations and guidance. By 930 PM, we
already have 10 foot seas at Boston Buoy (44013) and 13 foot
seas at Nantucket Shoals Buoy (44008), and the storm surge had
increased to around 1.2 or 1.3 feet at Nantucket and Boston.
Latest NAM seems to keep the stronger wind fields going a little
longer than the previous run, albeit still from the north at the
time of high tide. We are still thinking widespread minor
coastal flooding from Boston north and minor to moderate coastal
flooding south of Boston. Nudging storm surge and waves just a
little higher, however, tips the scales to potentially more
numerous areas of at least low end moderate coastal flooding,
widespread enough that we are more comfortable having a warning
versus advisory in place.

Thus, we have not made a dramatic change to forecast values but
are dealing with an event that is on the cusp of minor/moderate
for the Plymouth County coast, Cape Bay shoreline from Sandwich
to Dennis and Eastham and for Nantucket Harbor. Note that a
northerly wind will be onshore for the Cape Cod Bay side of the
Cape and the Nantucket Harbor area. For the Plymouth County
coastline, we should still have waves around 12 or 13 feet just
offshore and a storm surge near 2 feet at the time of high tide.
Another factor is that there does not seem to be much evidence
by the time of the high tide of atmospheric pressure rises,
which would tend to suppress the surge some. Another flag is
that an experimental wave run-up procedure indicates the
potential for wave overwash in vulnerable spots along the Hull
and Scituate coastline even though we don't think the waves will
be large enough for a great deal of overwash or wave battery.
All these factors have acted to tip the scale to a warning
versus advisory for areas of coastline south of Boston.

For Boston and shoreline points north, we anticipate fairly
widespread minor coastal flooding and have continued the Coastal
Flood Advisory there. Minor to possibly moderate erosion is
anticipated in the Plum Island area.
