NORTHERN WORCESTER...HAMPSHIRE...NORTHWESTERN MIDDLESEX AND FRANKLIN
COUNTIES...

At 958 AM EDT, radar indicated that the heaviest rainfall extended 
from Barre and Hubbardston eastward into Leominster and Lunenburg. 
To the west, areas of light to moderate rain continued to fall. The 
rain was moving east at 40 mph.

As of 10 am, some of the higher rainfall totals in the region 
included 3 inches in Northampton, 3.5 inches in Lunenburg, 3.16 
inches in Fitchburg, and 3 inches in Townsend. 

Flash flooding is expected in the warning area. Significant urban 
and poor drainage flooding is likely in some areas. In addition, 
some area streams and small rivers may rise out of their banks.  

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Leominster, Fitchburg, Holyoke, Amherst, Northampton, Greenfield,
Orange, Deerfield, Gardner, South Hadley, Holden, Easthampton,
Belchertown, Clinton, Monroe, Athol, Pepperell, Groton, Winchendon
and Lunenburg.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

COUNTIES...

At 1135 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated moderate rainfall across 
north central and northwest Massachusetts. This rain, combined with 
torrential rains that fell this morning, is producing areas of flash 
flooding. 

Urban flash flooding was occurring in Fitchburg, where portions of 
Route 31 and Route 2A were reported flooded.  In Leominster, storm 
drain covers popped off on several roadways. 

In addition to the urban flooding, some area streams and rivers were 
also rising rapidly. A River Flood Warning has been issued for the 
North Nashua River at Fitchburg, which is expected to go into minor 
flood early this afternoon. To the west, the Deerfield River at West 
Deerfield was in in minor flood. The Mill River at Northampton was 
rising rapidly and is expected to produce minor flooding during 
early this afternoon. The Green River at Colrain and North River at 
Shattuckville both experienced significant rises this morning, and 
should crest near flood stage early this afternoon.

Leominster, Fitchburg, Holyoke, Amherst, Northampton, Greenfield,
Orange, Deerfield, Gardner, South Hadley, Holden, Easthampton,
Belchertown, Clinton, Monroe, Athol, Pepperell, Groton, Winchendon
and Lunenburg.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become
unstable and unsafe.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately.
Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate
precautions to protect life and property.
