Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 358 AM CST Mon Dec 31 2018 .SHORT TERM... Today through Tomorrow evening. * Damaging wind threat with an area of thunderstorms for the northwestern half of the area from ~1-9 PM. * A non-zero tornado threat, particularly in the northwestern quarter of the area from ~1-4 PM. GOES-East imagery depicts an ejecting mid/upper-level disturbance across southwest Texas this morning and is on pace to approach the western Ohio Valley by late this afternoon. RAP mesoanalysis indicates downstream shortwave ridging & deep-layer ageostrophic forcing will subsequently result in cyclogenesis near the ArkLaTex and quickly move NNE as the surface low nears the Chicago area by ~3 PM. As the system becomes ever more transient, a strong SSW 925- 850mb low-level jet (LLJ) is expected to develop along the southern Mississippi River Valley and stretch northward towards the surface low. General intensification is expected into the afternoon with wind magnitudes increasing to 50-65 kts as it moves northeast towards central Alabama. With this in mind, a narrow axis of low- level theta-e advection will accompany increasing surface dewpoints in the low to mid 60s along and ahead of a trailing surface front/trough. Warm sector rain showers are expected throughout the late morning & afternoon and will favor the west & northwest areas. This forecast update introduces a non-zero tornado threat will exist across the northwest in the early afternoon. This results from a trend in better kinematic parameters across the area. With the strong SSW LLJ in place, S to SSE surface winds will increase throughout the day resulting in broad low-level hodograph curvature. Values of 0-1 km SRH (~300-500 m2/s2) is expected across the northwest whilst accompanying the best chances/temporal window for destabilization during the 1-4 PM timeframe. Given there are opportunities for discrete thunderstorm development ahead of the primary linear feature to the west in MS, we felt it was best to address this area of greater concern with a Slight Risk. This will also include any stretching potential in stronger updrafts embedded within the developing QLCS, which are problematic for causing brief spin-up tornadoes. Limiting factors for this system continues to be buoyancy. Cloud cover and weak lapse rates should inhibit CAPE values for much of the day. Most indications suggest MLCAPE will remain <500 J/kg, with lower values of SBCAPE. Limited insolation suggests thunderstorms will struggle to ingest surface-based parcels, though strong warm air/moisture advection keep this possibility on the table into the afternoon (especially if any breaks in cloud cover occurs). Regardless, believe dynamics & deep-layer shear will supersede thermodynamic profiles, as is not too uncommon for this area in the cool season. Overall & primary threat continues to be damaging winds. With the opportunity for bowing segments and a stronger downdraft associated with any stronger discrete or QLCS storms, mechanical mixing of LLJ winds is possible. This threat is further exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall weakening soil strength. Therefore, sub-severe criteria wind gusts may result in downed trees as well. General eastward progression is expected with line of showers & thunderstorms with discrete areas congealing into the line as it approaches the I-59 corridor in the 3-7 PM timeframe. As this occurs, we should see weakening of severe parameters as instability dies off and wind profiles become more unidirectional. This is expected as the LLJ & associated forcing moves displaces to the northeast and surface winds veer across the area. Therefore, trends in threats should taper off by ~9 PM with lingering areas of rain showers favoring the east and southeast thereafter. Cooler & drier air will move in from the northwest behind the frontal boundary providing a period of stable conditions for much of the forecast area heading into Tuesday afternoon. The lingering convergence axis and residual moisture (PWs ~1.6") suggests rain showers will continue into the evening hours. 40/Sizemore .LONG TERM... Tuesday night thru Monday morning Looks as though the rain will continue through much of this week with drier conditions likely this coming weekend. Rain chances will remain elevated in our southern counties as a weak warm front moves northward from the Gulf late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. As this features moves into our area, an upper level trough will be moving in from our west. The surface response is a low pressure situated in the western Gulf that will progress north-northeast late Wednesday through Thursday. Frontal lifting and an increase in southerly flow will allow for high rain chances across the majority of the area during this period. By Friday morning the surface low pressure and frontal boundary are north and east of the area. Have kept a slight chance of lingering showers to the north and east during the day on Friday. Not expecting too much wrap around moisture as guidance suggests the development of a dry slot on the back side of this system. Dry conditions expected this weekend as high pressure begins to build back into the region Friday night/early Saturday morning. This will be the predominate weather feature through early next week. 07 && .AVIATION... 06Z TAF Discussion. Widespread fog has developed and is spreading northward as a warm front lifts through the area. Fog will bring vis down to LIFR conditions. As southeasterly to southerly winds increase overnight, vis will improve but low stratus will keep IFR/LIFR conditions in place for most terminals. Cannot rule out a few showers overnight, but coverage will remain isolated to scattered, with the best coverage north of all forecast terminals through at least sunrise. Expect showers through the day tomorrow, ahead of a more organized line of showers and storms, that will move across the area late tomorrow afternoon and evening. Cigs could improve to MVFR briefly during the day, but expect heights to remain at or below 1500ft. Southerly winds will be breezy, with gusts of 20kts possible. 14 && .FIRE WEATHER... Low clouds with patchy fog is likely through early this morning. Increasing shower activity is expected from the west this afternoon before a line of thunderstorms moves across the area along and ahead of a frontal boundary. Look for the front to stall out across the southeast Tuesday and then lift back north on Wednesday. This wet pattern may finally come to an end with a drier airmass on Thursday.
