...Hazardous Travel Late Tonight Through Tuesday...

.Hazardous travel will develop across the area late tonight into
Tuesday morning with the worst conditions developing after 7 AM.
Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches with localized amounts to 12
inches are expected across southeast Minnesota into central 
Wisconsin. There could be a break in the snow over Clark and 
Taylor counties between 10 pm and 2 am before heavier snow 
redevelops.

Snow accumulations across northeast Iowa are expected to range
from 4 to 6 inches, with some blowing snow possible, along and
north of a line from Charles City to Decorah. Far southwest
Wisconsin and extreme northeast Iowa will see accumulations of
1 to locally 4 inches with some light icing also possible.

...Snow Across The North This Evening...Becoming Widespread
Tuesday Morning...

.Snow will continue to fall across northern Wisconsin for the rest
of the evening hours, generally along and north of Interstate 94.
The snow will become more widespread early Tuesday morning, with 
the potential for freezing drizzle across parts of northeast Iowa 
and southwest Wisconsin. 

Expect slick travel north of Interstate 94 tonight, with travel
becoming slippery to hazardous for all of the area as the day 
wears on Tuesday. Heaviest snows for the local area will likely 
fall from late Tuesday morning into the early evening.

Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches with localized amounts to
12 inches are expected across southeast Minnesota into central
Wisconsin. There could be a break in the snow over Clark and
Taylor counties between midnight and 5 am before heavier snow 
redevelops.

...Snow Will Increase This Morning With Travel Becoming 
Difficult...

.Early this morning, some drizzle or freezing drizzle is possible,
with more widespread snow developing from the west through the
early and mid morning hours. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches
are expected over much of southeast Minnesota into central 
Wisconsin, with 4 to 6 inches across parts of northeast Iowa. 
Over far northeast Iowa into southwest Wisconsin, 1 to 4 inches 
are expected, along with the possibility of a very light glazing 
of ice on untreated surfaces. The heaviest snow is expected to 
fall from mid to late morning through early evening. Some blowing 
and drifting snow is possible in open areas of southeast Minnesota

.Early this morning, a narrow band of snow extends from north- 
central Iowa into southeast Minnesota and central Wisconsin. Some
spots have already received 1 to 2 inches of snow within this 
band. Snow will spread south and east through the morning with 
snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, resulting in 
snow covered slick roads and difficult travel. Snow will continue 
through the afternoon with worsening road conditions before

...Snow Continued to Increase This Morning With Travel Becoming 
Difficult...

.A mid morning, a band of snow had expanded across areas along and 
northwest of a line from Mason City Iowa to La Crosse and 
Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin. Some spots have already received 1 to
3 inches of snow within this band, from around Wabasha Minnesota
into the Black River Falls and Neillsville Wisconsin areas. A
light glaze of ice has been reported in parts of northeast Iowa
into the Caledonia Minnesota area.

The snow will spread south and east through the morning with 
snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, resulting in 
snow covered slick roads and difficult travel, especially across
ridge tops and higher terrain areas. Snow will continue through 
the afternoon with worsening road conditions before tapering off 
from west to east late this evening.

Total Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected over much
of southeast Minnesota into central Wisconsin, with 4 to 6 inches
across parts of northeast Iowa. Over far northeast Iowa into

.A broad band of snow continued to expanded east across the area
late this morning. As of 1130 am the leading edge was near a
Waucoma and waukon Iowa to Viroqua and Adams-Friendship Wisconsin
line. Roads were reported to be wet to completely snow covered
under the heavier snow band. Lesser traveled secondary roads were
mainly snow covered. 

Snow totals of 3 to 5 inches have already fallen from around
Zumbro Falls and Wabasha Minnesota to Black River Falls and
Neillsville Wisconsin, with 1 to 3 inches common south of the
heaviest snowfall amounts. A patchy light glaze of ice was 
reported earlier in parts of northeast Iowa into southwest 
Wisconsin.

The moderate to heavy snow will continue to spread east through 
the early afternoon hours, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches 
per hour possible. Snow covered and slick roads with difficult 
travel can be expected, especially across ridge tops and higher

...Light to Locally Heavy Snow Falling Across The Entire Area at
Mid Afternoon, Many Roads Snow or Slush Covered...

.A broad area of light to locally heavy snow continued to move
east across the area at mid afternoon. Based on reports and area
web-cameras, many of the main roads were generally wet as of mid
afternoon, with more snow on the lesser traveled or untreated 
secondary roads. 
 
Snow totals through 330 pm have been in the 3 to 6 inch range 
across much of southeast Minnesota into western and north-central
Wisconsin. Across portions of northeast Iowa into the La Crosse,
Tomah and Friendship Wisconsin area amounts so far have been more
in the 1 to 3 inch range.

Snow or slush covered and slick roads with difficult travel can 
be expected through this evening, especially across ridge tops and
higher terrain areas. Snow will continue through the rest of the 
afternoon and much of this evening. Road conditions are expected 
to deteriorate after 6 pm, as snowfall continues, the sun starts
to set and temperatures begin to fall. 

A second band of heavier snow was beginning to move areas west of
Rochester to Charles City, with additional accumulations of 1 to 
4 inches for many locations before the snow tapers off from west 
to east later this evening. 

Total Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected over much
of southeast Minnesota into central Wisconsin, with 4 to 6 inches
across parts of northeast Iowa. Over far northeast Iowa into 
southwest Wisconsin, 1 to 4 inches are expected. Some blowing and 
drifting snow is also possible in open areas of southeast Minnesota
and northeast Iowa this evening as winds increase.

...Snow Continues Over The Entire Area...

.Snow continues to fall over the entire area early this evening.
Radar was indicating the heaviest snow was generally along and
east of a line from Wabasha, MN to New Hampton, IA. The visibility
in this heavier band of snow was being reduced to a half mile
or less.

Despite the persistent snowfall, road conditions are generally wet
to partially snow covered. Roads that are less traveled or have
not been treated might have more snow on them. Road conditions may
deteriorate this evening with the continued snowfall and as
temperatures slowly cool allowing for more accumulation to occur
on the roads.

The snow will continue for much of the evening before tapering off
from the west to east. Additional accumulations should be in the 1
to 3 inch range with the highest totals expected over central
Wisconsin.

Some blowing and drifting snow will possible in open areas of 
southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa this evening as winds

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)

A complex early spring storm will impact the region tonight through
Tuesday. But first for today, expect increasing clouds ahead of the
approaching short-wave trough. A narrow band of warm air advection/
isentropic lift induced precipitation will move northward late
this morning and into the afternoon/evening, mainly impacting
southeast MN into north-central WI. Thermal profiles generally
favor a snow or rain/snow mix and there could be minor slushy snow
accumulations mainly across Clark/Taylor Counties this afternoon/
evening. Otherwise, temperatures today will be in the 30s to low
40s with increasing southeast wind that could gust at times up to
20 mph for areas west of the Mississippi River.

Tonight through Tuesday, a strong lee cyclone moves from eastern
CO through northern MO and into central IL. This places the
forecast area within the strong deformation precipitation axis
north of the low. 02.00Z models show there has been an increase
in liquid QPF and a slight southward shift in the heaviest
precipitation. Thermal profiles support mostly snow along and
north of I-90 with more of a snow/wintry mix farther south. In
addition, cloud ice could be lacking at times across portions of
northeast IA and southwest WI, resulting in some light freezing
rain and a glaze of ice at the surface. Model consensus paints
roughly 0.5 to 0.75 inches liquid across the forecast area,
resulting in roughly 6-10 inches of snow across southeast MN into
west central and central WI and 4-6 inches across portions of
northeast IA. North winds will also increase on Tuesday behind the
departing low, gusting at times up to 30 mph west of the
Mississippi River and this may create some blowing and drifting
snow. All said, expanded the Winter Storm Watch to include all but
the southernmost forecast area from 06Z tonight through 06Z
Wednesday. With snow not expected until after midnight tonight,
this allows enough time for the day shift to re-evaluate 02.12Z
model guidance and upgrade to warnings and/or advisories. No
matter the headline, travel may become hazardous at times late
tonight through Tuesday, including during the Tuesday morning and
evening commutes.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

Tuesday night through Thursday, fast northwest flow aloft will
continue. Dry conditions will be the rule, but it will be cold for
early April standards with daily highs in the 30s to low 40s and
lows in the single digits and teens above zero. This is easily
10-15 degrees below normal. The next best chance for precipitation
will be Sunday as another eastern Pacific trough crashes onto the
West Coast.

Clouds will increase and gradually lower, remaining VFR through
much of the day, as winds increase from the south and southeast.
Better precip chances should remain north of KLSE/KRST today. Snow
will begin to increase tonight over the area. Ceilings will fall
into the MVFR range, possibly IFR at KRST. Visibilities should
drop to IFR as the snow develops. Some adjustments in timing of
the snow and lower visibilities will likely be needed in
subsequent updates.
